Transfiguration of Our Lord February 15, :30 & 11:00 a.m.
GATHERING PRE-SERVICE MUSIC Gigue Dietrich Buxtehude ENTRANCE HYMN ELW #316 O Wondrous Image APOSTOLIC GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. GLORIA 2
PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, the resplendent light of your truth shines from the mountaintop into our hearts. Transfigure us by your beloved Son, and illumine the world with your image, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. FIRST LESSON: 2 Kings 2:1-12 WORD Now when the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here; for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel." But Elisha said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel. The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you know that today the LORD will take your master away from you?" And he said, "Yes, I know; keep silent." Elijah said to him, "Elisha, stay here; for the LORD has sent me to Jericho." But he said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they came to Jericho. The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you know that today the LORD will take your master 3
away from you?" And he answered, "Yes, I know; be silent." Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here; for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan." But he said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you." Elisha said, "Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit." He responded, "You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not." As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha kept watching and crying out, "Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. PSALM 50:1-6 Refrain SECOND LESSON: 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus' sake. For it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. 4
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Choir: This is my Son, my Chosen; Listen to him. GOSPEL: Mark 9:2-9 The Gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, "This is my Son, the Beloved listen to him!" Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY ELW #715 Christ Be Our Light PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Gracious God, hear our prayer. SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST PARISH CONCERNS 5
MEAL OFFERING AND OFFERTORY MUSIC Blessing, Glory, Wisdom and Thanks J. S. Bach OFFERTORY PRAYER Let us pray. Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen. OPENING DIALOG The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who, sharing our life, lived among us to reveal your glory and love, that our darkness should give way to your own brilliant light. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: SANCTUS 6
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER AND THE LORD S PRAYER Blessed are you, O God. You are the light and life of all. By your powerful Word you created all things and through your prophets you called your people to be light to the nations. Blessed are you for Jesus in whom your saving Word is fulfilled. On the high mountain you pulled back the veil of heaven and declared him to be your beloved Son. Jesus is our Light shining in our darkness to show forth your mercy and grace. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Remembering Jesus preaching and healing; his dying and rising and the promise that he will come again, we wait with joy for that day when all the universe will rejoice in your life-giving light. 7
Send your Holy Spirit upon us and this meal, that refreshed with heavenly food, we may be light for the world, showing forth the brilliance of your Son. Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all glory and honor is yours almighty God, in your holy church, both now and forever. Amen. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. DISTRIBUTION TO THE FAITHFUL AND RITES OF HEALING We welcome all who desire to receive the bread and wine of communion for the forgiveness of sin and renewal of life to join us at the Lord s Table. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Communion is by intinction at the rail. The host is dipped into the red wine or white grape juice, as each communicant chooses. Gluten-free wafers are available. Young children and others who do not commune are invited and welcome to come forward with arms crossed across the chest for a blessing. Ministers are available during the distribution of communion to offer individual prayers for healing and anointing with oil. Come to one of the stations in the Chapel before or after receiving communion. FRACTION AND INVITATION MUSIC DURING THE DISTRIBUTION ELW #392 Alleluia! Sing to Jesus ELW #535 Hallelujah, We Sing Your Praises ELW #318 Alleluia, Song of Gladness 8
POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Let us pray. Everlasting God, we bless you that you have brought us to the mountaintop and fed us with the life and light of your Son. Send us in his name from this place to bring light into dark corners, healing where lives are torn, and nourishment to every hungry heart, in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. CHILDREN S WORD SENDING BURYING THE ALLELUIA BLESSING The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord s face shine on you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and (+) give you peace. Amen. DISMISSAL Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. POSTLUDE 9

Ash Wednesday Lent, our annual time of preparation for Easter, begins this week on Ash Wednesday, February 18. The journey begins that day with three worship opportunities: 11:15 a.m. (followed by soup) 6:30 p.m. a special family service in the Tree of Life Room 7:30 p.m. music led by the Chancel Choir Ash Wednesday is a quiet day. It is a day of introspection and prayer. It is day to confess sins and hear the call to observe a good and holy Lent. This is all very important as we ponder the ways our lives have been separated from a life of following Jesus, but that is not what this day is ultimately about. Lent is not a gloomy time, but a time to be renewed in life and the things of God. The word Lent refers to the lengthening of days and really means springtime. The imposition of ashes reminds us that we are not God, but then the liturgy turns to the table, where God accepts us nonetheless, and feeds us with the Bread of Life. We have recovered the wisdom of the ancient church and its Catechumenate with an emphasis on preparing for baptism and baptismal renewal. We journey through Lent with an eye toward Easter and our participation again in the mystery of Jesus dying and rising. We walk alongside our WAY candidates and take on spiritual disciplines not as ends in themselves but as wonderful ways to open ourselves to the things of God and so prepare for Easter. Generosity, giving to the poor, visiting the sick, working for justice, fasting and prayer are all gifts from God to help open our minds and hearts to make room for the wondrous gift of Resurrection. - Pastor Hansen 13
Adult Forum This Morning This Morning at 10 am in the Tree of Life Room Camp Lutherwood Update Hear from Executive Director Rob Gillespie about the latest from Camp Lutherwood, a Lutheran-based outdoors camp and retreat center near Bellingham. In addition to a general update, Rob with Executive Director Rob Gillespie will discuss the impact the Outdoor Ministry has on leadership in the church. PRLC has a long history of involvement with the camp, and we look forward to furthering this relationship. Surrounded by a Great Cloud of Witnesses Commemorations and Festivals for the Week Wednesday, February 18, 2015 Martin Luther, renewer of the church, died 1546 Though he began his adult church life as a simple Augustinian monk, Luther challenged the abuses he saw in the church, and his work eventually led to the Protestant Reformation. Luther's accomplishments included liturgical reform, translation of the Bible, and creation of the Small and Large Catechisms. 14
