2 Jesus, come, my feet are dirty. You have become a servant for my sake, so fill your basin with water; come, wash my feet. I know that I am bold in saying this, but your own words have made me fearful: If I do not wash your feet, you will have no companionship with me. Wash my feet, then, so that I may be your companion. But what am I saying: Wash my feet? Peter could say these words, for all that needed washing were his feet. For the rest, he was completely clean. I must be made clean with that other washing of which you said: I have a baptism with which I must be baptized. - Origen, 3rd century

The Mystery of Easter the death and resurrection of Christ - begins to unfold today as we begin the Three Days. The Three Days is one service that continues Good Friday, culminates at the Easter Vigil, and continues with Easter Sunday worship. All gather in silence. GATHERING Prior to each service, the pastor is available in the Chapel for Individual Confession and Forgiveness. The order for Individual Confession may be found in the front portion of Evangelical Lutheran Worship on page 243. You may prepare by reading and praying through this service as you wait for the communal service of confession and forgiveness to begin. Please rise at the pouring of the water. First time: Cantor Second time: Assembly CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Friends in Christ, in this Lenten season we have heard our Lord's call to struggle against sin, death, and the devil all that keeps us from loving God and each other. This is the struggle to which we were called at baptism. We have shared this discipline of Lent with new brothers and sisters in Christ who will be baptized or affirm their baptisms at the Easter Vigil. Within the community of the church, God never wearies of forgiving sin and giving the peace of reconciliation. Let us confess our sin against God and our neighbor, and enter the celebration of the great Three Days reconciled with God and with one another. The proclamation of forgiveness signals the end of our Lenten journey and our entrance into the Three Days. 3

Silence is kept for reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. ENTRANCE HYMN GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Holy God, source of all love, on the night of his betrayal, Jesus gave us a new commandment, to love one another as he loves us. Write this commandment in our hearts, and give us the will to serve others as he was the servant of all, your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. WORD FIRST LESSON: EXODUS 12:1-4, The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the LORD. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. Israel remembered its deliverance from slavery in Egypt by celebrating the festival of Passover. Christ is our Passover Lamb who delivers us from sin and death. PSALM 116 5

SECOND LESSON: 1 CORINTHIANS 11:23-26 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. When we eat Christ s body and drink his blood, we proclaim his death until he comes again. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Cantor: I give you a new commandment; love one another as I have loved you. GOSPEL: JOHN 13:1-17, 31B-35 The Holy Gospel according to St. John. Glory to you, O Lord. Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Lord, are you going to wash my feet? Jesus answered, You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand. Peter said to him, You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered, Unless I wash you, you have no share with me. Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head! Jesus said to him, One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you. For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, Not all of you are clean. Jesus washes the feet of his disciples. We call today Maundy Thursday because the night is marked by the new commandment ( Mandate ) that Jesus gives us to love others as he loves us. 6

After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, Where I am going, you cannot come. I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY ELW #358 Great God Your Love Has Called Us Here PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE God of love, Hear our prayer. SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST 7

MEAL PREPARATION OF THE TABLE AND OFFERING OF GIFTS 11:15 Lord of Lords, Adored by Angels Paul Bouman 7:00 Christ Among Us David Haas OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. Silence God of glory, receive these gifts and the offering of our lives. As Jesus was lifted up from the earth, draw us to your heart in the midst of this world, that all creation may be brought from bondage to freedom, from darkness to light, and from death to life; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks, Father, through Jesus Christ, your beloved Son, whom you sent in this end of the ages to save and redeem us and to proclaim to us your will. He is your Word, inseparable from you. Through him you created all things, and in him you take delight. He is your Word, sent from heaven to a virgin s womb. He there took on our nature and our lot and was shown forth as your Son, born of the Holy Spirit and of the virgin Mary. It is he, our Lord Jesus, who fulfilled all your will and won for you a holy people; he stretched out his hands in suffering in order to free from suffering those who trust you. It is he who, handed over to a death he freely accepted, in order to destroy death, to break the 8

bonds of the evil one, to crush hell underfoot, to give light to the righteous, to establish his covenant, and to show forth the resurrection, taking bread and giving thanks to you said: Take and eat; this is my body broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. In the same way he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This is my blood poured out for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, then, his death and resurrection, we lift this bread and cup before you, giving you thanks that you have made us worthy to stand before you and to serve you as your priestly people. And we ask you: Send your Spirit upon these gifts of your Church; gather into one all who share this bread and wine; fill us with your Holy Spirit to establish our faith in truth, that we may praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him all glory and honor are yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church both now and forever. Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND INVITATION TO COMMUNION SHARING BREAD AND CUP AND FOOTWASHING We welcome all who desire to meet the Risen Jesus in sharing bread and cup to join us for Holy Communion around the Table. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Red wine or white grape juice is available as each communicant chooses. Gluten-free wafers are available. You may drink form the cup or dip the bread into the cup. As you leave the table you may, before returning to your seat, approach any footwashing station to have your feet washed. You are invited to wash the feet of the person after you. A place is provided at the station to remove your shoes. Participation in Holy Communion makes us one body in Jesus Christ. Footwashing is the posture of discipleship. Having been fed and formed at the supper, we go forth to fervently love our neighbors. 9

Silence When Twilight Comes Where Charity and Love Prevail Jesu, Jesu, Fill us with Your Love Ubi caritas et amor O Living Bread from Heaven (as needed) Lord Jesus, in a wonderful sacrament you strengthen us with the saving power of your suffering, death, and resurrection. May this sacrament of your body and blood so work in us that the fruits of your redemption will show forth in the way we live, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. STRIPPING OF THE CHANCEL AREA Psalm 88 Nancy Raabe As Psalm 88 is sung, the sacramental elements and vessels, linens, candles, and books are removed from the worship space. Silence The stripping evokes the stripping of Jesus before his death. Every pretense is taken away and we are left with the unadorned expectation of the crucifixion that will become for us the conquering of love. The congregation departs in silence, to return for the continuation of the Great Three Days on Good Friday, Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday. 10
