FEAST OF ALL SAINTS NOVEMBER 5, :30 & 11:00 A.M.

Welcome Visitors As people made one in the waters of baptism, we believe our lives of faith are strengthened by diversity. We strive to be a community that welcomes all people. We celebrate God s unconditional love and respond joyfully to your presence here. All are welcome. You are welcome. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us. Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. (If you prefer to have your child with you in worship, but are worried that they might disturb the service, we also have a crying room upstairs in the balcony. You will be able to hear and see most of the service there.) Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to Men s and Women s rooms there is also a Family room with a changing table. Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form and if there are special sign ups you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service. Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. Office Manager Christina Bogar (or a volunteer) is there to provide information about our church and to receive information such as address, phone or changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program information are located there. Look for the check-in desk in the church gathering area. Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportunities for service and study. You can also find us on Facebook! Just search for Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church Community. Join us again! We worship every Sunday at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. and would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often. 2

Since there are many more Christian saints than the 365 days of the year, this day is set aside to honor all of them. Many saints have never had their names mentioned beyond a very small circle of friends. Not all saints are alike. Spiritual gifts are as varied as the many interests and ability that exists in the broad spectrum of people. Some saints have mystical experiences; others do not. Some saints stay busily at work in the world; other saints have neither the energy nor the social skills for that. Many saints have no idea that they are saints. One saint will rediscover the value of tradition, while another saint will open new doors of innovation. Each life has a purpose and fits into God s grand scheme the way plants an oak or a trillium grow in a forest. - Bernard Bangley Gathering Pre-Service Music Aria Eugène Bozza Please rise and face the font at the pouring of the water. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. When we were baptized into Christ Jesus, we were baptized into his death. We were buried with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. Jesus said, I am the Resurrection and the Life; those who believe in me shall never die. (John 11:25-26) The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, we remember with thanksgiving those who have loved and served you on earth, who now rest from their labors, especially Those from this congregation who have died since last All Saints Day are named. A bell is tolled at each name. 3

Gary Brakken Vivian Bye Jack Ellstrom Marlene Feldmann Lucy Giles Ruth Liles Carolyn McCune Yvonne Røskeland Esther Rost Dorothy Tuvey Grace Urdal Keep us in union with all your saints, and bring us with them to the joyous feast of heaven; through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. Amen. O God, we give you thanks for all your faithful people who have followed the light of your word throughout the centuries into our time and place, especially those we name before you You are invited to speak the names of beloved departed ones from all times and places. Entrance Hymn ELW #422 For All The Saints Greeting and Prayer of the Day The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. And also with you. Let us pray. (Silence) Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Word First Lesson: Revelation 7:9-17 After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried 4

out in a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen. Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from? I said to him, Sir, you are the one that knows. Then he said to me, These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. 8:30 Psalm 34 Dorothy Christopherson 11:00 Psalm 34 Join in singing of the refrain at the direction of the cantor. The Lamb is the shepherd. 5

Second Lesson: 1 John 3:1-3 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. We are saints now and in the time to come. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Please face the Cross as the Gospel is processed into our midst. The Assembly sings Alleluia ; the choir sings the appointed verse. Choir sings: They are before the throne of God, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12 The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Jesus speaks blessing upon those who know their need of God. 6

Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Hymn of the Day ELW #418 Rejoice in God's Saints Prayers of the People Gracious God, Hear our prayer. Sharing the Peace of Christ Parish Announcements Meal Preparation of the Table and Offering of Gifts 8:30 I Sing a Song of the Saints of God David Herman 11:00 Lux Aeterna from Requiem John Rutter Translation: Light eternal shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Offering Prayer Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen. 7

The Great Thanksgiving It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. By the witness of your saints you show us the hope of our calling, and strengthen us to run the race set before us, that we may delight in your mercy and rejoice with them in glory. And so, with all the saints, with the choirs of angels and all the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 8

With all the saints of Africa and Asia, Europe and the Americas, India, Australia, and the islands, we praise you, O God, for creating the worlds. With all the baptized, the old and the young, the weak and the strong, the famous and the forgotten, we bless you, O God, for providing mortals with food. With all the faithful in tents and mansions, cities and farms, past and present, we worship you, O God, for sheltering the generations. With all your holy people who minister in the church, who serve the poor, who walk the way of the cross, we glorify you, O God, for journeying with us in Jesus. With Paul and the evangelists, we remember the meal of your Son: On the night before he died, he took bread, and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. With Peter and all the martyrs, we honor Christ s death, saying Amen. Amen! With Mary Magdalene and all the apostles, we proclaim his resurrection, shouting Amen. Amen! 9

With John, the theologians, and the mystics, we celebrate Christ present with us, exclaiming Amen. Amen! With the Virgin Mary and all who sang of your greatness, we pray for the power of the Spirit. Imbue this gathering, this bread and this cup, with the merciful body and blood of Christ. Form us into a communion of service, and infuse your earth with the wholeness we seek. With grandparents and godparents, with the Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Protestants, Pentecostals, Evangelicals, and independents, and with Gary, Vivian, Jack, Marlene, Lucy, Ruth, Carolyn, Yvonne, Esther, Dorothy, and Grace, lead us to a future we cannot yet see, and at the end draw all humanity to yourself. Now with all of the family you saved by your love, we shout blessing: Blessing glory: Glory wisdom: Wisdom thanksgiving: Thanksgiving honor: Honor power: Power might: Might be to you, our God, forever and ever. Amen. Amen. The Lord s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. 10

Breaking of the Bread and Invitation to the Meal Presider breaks the bread in silence. The gifts of God for the people of God. Taste and see that the Lord is good. Sharing Bread and Cup All are welcome to meet the Risen Jesus in the sharing of bread and cup. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Communion will be in front on the floor level today. You may dip the bread into the red wine or white grape juice, or drink directly from the cup. Gluten-free wafers are available. Ask the server. Those who do not commune are invited and welcome to come forward for a blessing. Ministers are available in the Chapel directly located across the altar area for healing prayers and anointing. If you would like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you. Once you have received the bread and cup you are invited to proceed to one of the tables in the transept. There you may light a candle and place it near the photos and remembrances of beloved saints. 11

Surrounded by a Great Cloud of Witnesses Commemorations and Festivals for the Week John Christian Frederick Heyer, died 1873; Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg, died 1719; Ludwig Nommensen, died 1918; missionaries Tuesday, November 7, 2017 Heyer was the first missionary sent out by American Lutherans. After teaching at Gettysburg College and Seminary he was assigned to the Andhra region of India. A worker among the Tamil people on the southeast coast of India, Ziegenbalg was opposed both by local Hindus and by Danish authorities who favored a different missionary style. He was known for caring about the welfare of the whole person. Nommensen was born in northern Germany and was sent to Sumatra as a Lutheran missionary. Working among the Batak people, he translated the scriptures into their language, and honored their native culture. Martin, Bishop of Tours, died 397 Saturday, November 11, 2017 Martin's pagan father enlisted him in the Roman army. Approached by a beggar, Martin cut his cloak in half and gave part to the man, whom he later understood as representing Christ. He asked to leave the army, but was jailed instead. After his release, he became a preacher, and later a bishop. Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, teacher, died 1855 Saturday, November 11, 2017 Kierkegaard was a Danish theologian whose writings also gave rise to the modern philosophy of existentialism. He frequently attacked the complacency of the state church of his day, as well as its desire to be accepted by polite society rather than be a stumbling block. If you are interested in baking Welcome Loaves starting in January, please contact Kirstin Shaw at (voice or text), or her at kirstinshaw9@gmail.com. Please contact her even if you are a previous baker or signed up at the Ministry Fair. Dear Friends, This month, I took on a new role. I'm headed to Harborview Medical Center, where I will be the spiritual care provider (chaplain) on the palliative care team. I'm looking forward to working with patients and families in difficult situations, and providing spiritual companionship along some of life's hardest journeys. While at Harborview, I will continue with my education with the goal of becoming a board certified chaplain. I love the spiritual care team at Harborview, and after a life-changing CPE experience with them this summer, I'm proud to join them as a staff member. Thank you for all your support, prayer, and well wishes as I make this career transition. I have enjoyed my time among you, and I will always know that I have a home at PRLC. Peace, Katherine GrayBuck Stay at Home Tea begins this week. Rather than inviting you to another fundraising event we're inviting you to relax at home with a cup of tea and consider supporting Lutheran Youth of North Seattle and our efforts to serve youth in a Christ-centered community. This year's funds will go toward our trip to the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston this June. Invitations will be available after the service. Middle School Dessert and Devotions are tonight from 6:00-8:00pm at the LYONS Den (St John United). Join us as we watch Nacho Libre, enjoy some dessert, and explore our faith. 18 Come Join Us at The WAY COME AND VISIT! By now you've probably heard of The WAY, Phinney's approach to a deepening faith and community, but may not be sure if it's what you'd like. During November and early December you can just drop in and see, without feeling like you have to commit. We begin at 5 pm in Fellowship Hall with a meal, and end promptly at 7 pm, with childcare provided throughout. Come and visit! Give. Share. Eat. End hunger in King County! Join The Outreach Program (outreachprogram.org), at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, alongside other local churches, businesses, and organizations in packing 73,000+ meals (that's one for every food insecure child in King County). December 1 and 2 more than 200 volunteers will gather at Gethsemane Lutheran Church to package nutritionally sound, shelf-stable meals that only require boiling water to prepare. Meals will then be distributed throughout King County through partner organizations that serve the hungry. You can participate by volunteering your time to pack meals or by making a financial donation (meals cost.25/serving and an average assembly requires approximately $1350/2.5 hour shift to operate). Participants of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate in packaging up meals. There are multiple shifts which need to be filled on December 1 and 2. You can sign up to volunteer, make a donation, or find additional information at Mary's Place Family Shelter is coming to PRLC beginning on Tuesday, November 7. Four or five families (moms and children) will overnight with us for one week. We need many helpers to make this a successful week for the families. We need volunteers for setting up, making dinner, overnight hosting, extra help for homework and dinner serving, laundry, van driving, taking down our set up, laundry, etc. Please consider being a part of this amazing volunteer team. Contact member Peggy Kreger (kregerbp@msn.com) to ask questions or to volunteer. 18

RACHEL AND ZACH: MINISTRY UPDATES IN CENTRAL EUROPE Always Reforming by Rachel Eskesen We ve been leading up to the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation for years and finally (finally!) yesterday was the big day! Now it is November 1st and I find myself asking -- what is next? How do we continue to carry the spirit of the reformation onward into the next 500 years? Some of the answers to these questions can be found in the lives and stories of the Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) volunteers who serve around the world Read the full newsletter from PRLC seminarian Zach Courter and his wife Rachel Eskesen, who are serving with YAGM in Hungary. 21 Sunday Mornings at 10 AM in the Tree of Life Room TODAY November 5 Surrounded by a Cloud of Witnesses Since the first century, Christians have kept a calendar to honor the faith and lives of persons who have exemplified what it means to be salt of the earth and light for the world. Why do we single out certain women and men among the vast communion of saints into which we are all baptized? How did this calendar come into being and why keep it still? How might remembering and honoring people like Julian of Norwich, Francis and Clare of Assisi, St. Luke, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of Jesus, Mother Theresa, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Luther King and a host of other Christian witnesses edify our lives of faith? Join Pastor Hansen on this All Saints Sunday for a spirited conversation. NEXT SUNDAY November 12 Muslims and Christians Together Neighbors in Faith, a ministry supported by both the ELCA Northwest Washington Synod and the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia, fosters mutual relationships with Muslims and other faith communities with the goal of promoting a more peaceful world. Pastor Terry Kyllo, director of this ministry, will discuss this interfaith work. He believes that interfaith dialogue is essential to learning to live with each other and our cultural differences.
