All Saints Sunday, November 2, 2014 The flowers at the altar this morning are given by David Johnson and Kimber Bishop in memory of David s mother, Gloria Johnson. Rest eternal grant her, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her. Those Who Have Died Since Last All Saints Day Bjørn Leo Valdok, died July 20, 2014 Gerald Goetz, died August 3, 2014 Ingrid Siedler, died August 30, 2014 Helen Rockom, died October 28, 2014 Welcome Visitors We welcome all who worship with us today. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us. Nursery: A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to Men s and Women s rooms there is also a Family room with a changing table. Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form and if there are special sign ups you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service. Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. Office Manager Christina Bogar is there to provide information about our church and to receive information such as address, phone or changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program information are located there. Look for the check in desk in the church gathering area. Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportunities for service and study. Join us again! We worship every Sunday at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. and would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often. 2

Bjørn Leo Valdok Gerald Goetz Ingrid Siedler Helen Rockom ENTRANCE HYMN, #422 For All the Saints GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 4 FIRST READING: Revelation 7:9-17 After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal ;they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. PSALM 34 (11:00) SECOND READING: 1 John 3:1-3 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. 4

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Sung by the choir, then by the congregation: Choir: They are before the throne of God, and the One who is seated on the throne will shelter them. Congregation: (Repeat Alleluia) GOSPEL: Matthew 5:1-12 The holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY ELW #728 Blest Are They 5

Sacrament of Holy Baptism (8:30) (The 11:00 a.m. service continues with Nicene Creed on page 9) INTRODUCTION TO BAPTISM God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope through the sacrament of baptism. By water and the Word God delivers us from sin and death and raises us to new life in Jesus Christ. We are united with all the baptized in the one body of Christ, anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and joined in God's mission for the life of the world. PRESENTATION Sponsors: Response: Parents: Sponsors: Congregation: We present Oscar Heath Brown for Holy Baptism. Parents, trusting in the grace and love of Jesus Christ, do you desire to have your son baptized? We do. As you bring your son to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with him among God's faithful people, bring him to the word of God and the holy supper, teach him the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in his hands the holy scriptures, and nurture him in faith and prayer, so that he may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help your son grow in the Christian faith and life? We do. Sponsors, do you promise to nurture this child in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God s Spirit, and to help him live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? We do. People of God, do you promise to support this child and pray for him as he lives his new life in Christ? We do. 6

RENUNCIATION OF EVIL AND CONFESSION OF FAITH I now ask you to reject sin, profess your faith in Christ, and confess the faith of the Church, the faith in which we baptize. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? (Parents and sponsors respond individually) Response: I renounce them. Do you renounce all the powers of this world that rebel against God? (Parents and sponsors respond together) Response: I renounce them. Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? (The congregation joins in this response) Congregation: I renounce them. Do you believe in the God the Father? Congregation: I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? Congregation: I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? Congregation: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATERS The Lord be with you. Congregation: And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Congregation: It is right to give thanks to the Lord our God. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus' death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up to live in you. 7

Congregation: BAPTISM Congregation: Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that those who are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. Oscar, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! LAYING ON OF HANDS Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you have given us new birth, washed us from sin, and raised us to eternal life. Sustain Oscar with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Congregation: Amen. SIGNING WITH THE CROSS AND ANOINTING Oscar, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Congregation: Amen. PRESENTATION OF CANDLE WELCOME Assisting Minister: Congregation: Let us welcome the newly baptized. We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative and redeeming word to all the world. The newly baptized is presented to the congregation. Congregation: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Continue with Prayers and Peace on page 9. 8

NICENE CREED (11:00) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS AND PEACE (8:30 & 11:00) Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all the people according to their needs. Gracious God, Hear our prayer. Presider concludes the prayers. 9

SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST PARISH CONCERNS OFFERING AND OFFERTORY MUSIC Gather at the River arr. Susan LaBarr OFFERTORY PRAYER Merciful God, As grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen. OPENING DIALOG AND PROPER PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our savior Jesus Christ. By the witness of the saints you show us the hope of our calling, and strengthen us to run the race set before us, that we may revel in your mercy, and rejoice with you in glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with Bjørn, Gerald, Ingrid, Helen, and all the faithful of every time and every place, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 10

SANCTUS EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Holy are you, O God, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us, gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, That we may be for the world the body of Christ, Redeemed by his blood. God of Sarah and Abraham, Miriam and Moses, all the priests and prophets, Mary and Joseph, the apostles and martyrs, our mothers and fathers, 11

and the faithful in every generation, renew our communion with all your saints. Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, Strengthen us to run with perseverance the race set before us, Looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Make us one with them and each other. Make us one in Christ, united in ministry to all the world, Until Christ comes in final victory And we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, All honor and glory is yours, now and forever. Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. FRACTION AND INVITATION We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION AND PRAYERS FOR HEALING Communion will be served today by intinction at stations across the front of the church. We welcome all who desire to receive the Lord s body and blood for the forgiveness of sin and renewal of life to join us for Holy Communion. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Red wine or white grape juice is available as each communicant chooses. Gluten-free bread is available. Young children and others who do not commune are invited and welcome to come forward for a blessing. 13 LAMB OF GOD HYMNS DURING DISTRIBUTION ELW #476, Thee We Adore ELW #630, In Heaven Above ELW #426, Sing with All the Saints in Glory POST-COMMUNION PRAYER By your word and sacraments, O God, you give us a foretaste of the new heaven and new earth that will be ours forever. Strengthen us in this vision that we might draw others to believe in the hope that is ours, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. CHILDREN S WORD (11:00) DEDICATION OF COLUMBARIUM (8:30 & 11:00) Sisters and brothers in Christ, we are gathered to ask God s blessing as with thankfulness we dedicate this columbarium to the glory of God. We give you thanks, O God, for your abundant gifts. 13

Your days are without number; a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past. You are the Lord of the past, the present, and the future; you hold eternity in the palm of your hand. We remember with thanksgiving all the saints who have gone before us, who by their lives have testified to the love of God. Give us grace to follow them in faith as your beloved children, maturing into the likeness of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by whose death and burial you have sanctified the graves of all who sleep in you. Send your blessing upon us and upon this columbarium, which we set apart today to your praise and honor. As you raised up your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, the first fruits of those who sleep, so also by your Spirit make us to be partakers of that new life which you have promised to those who believe; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. BENEDICTION AND DISMISSAL The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen. Go in peace.
