Lent Begins This Wednesday March 1, 2017 Ash Wednesday The Lenten journey begins on Ash Wednesday, a solemn call to fast as we begin our journey to the baptismal waters at Easter. The liturgy includes confession of sin and the imposition of ashes. With the cross of ashes on our brow, we long for the spiritual renewal that flows from the Easter feast to come. This year Ash Wednesday falls on March 1 st. We will have three worship opportunities. The 11:15 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. liturgies are held in the sanctuary. At 6:30 p.m. we offer a shorter service in the Tree of Life room, intended for families with children. All three services include imposition of ashes. More Worship Opportunities in Lent We have so many excellent opportunities to worship and learn together this season. As we simplify other aspects of our life and seek spiritual depth, we can center around a practice of prayer, either alone or together. In addition to the services offered on Ash Wednesday, we will also be having Lent Midweek services every Wednesday during Lent: March 8, 15, 22, 29, and April 5. Please mark your calendar for service at 11:15 and soup lunch at 12. These midweek services will be a chance for quiet reflection, singing the simple music of Taizé, and praying with the Psalms. We are also expanding our adult education during Bread for the Journey in the season of Lent. There will be an adult education class at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings in the Fireside Room, and we will be praying with the Psalms in a new way. It will be a time to touch our hearts and spirits rather than living in our minds. Please come join us, and enjoy a holy Lent. 3

Today is the Transfiguration of our Lord. The season after Epiphany comes to a close and we segue into the season of Lent, our annual journey to Easter. The vision of Jesus glory at the Transfiguration sustains us and God s command to listen to him directs us. At the conclusion of today s liturgy, we put aside the alleluia. It will be missing in our songs and prayers during Lent and will be sung again at the celebration of the Resurrection. Gathering PRE-SERVICE MUSIC How Brightly Shines the Morning Star setting by J. Pachelbel ENTRANCE HYMN ELW #315 How Good, Lord, to Be Here GREETING AND PRAYER OF THE DAY The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray. (Silence) O God, in the transfiguration of your Son you confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the witness of Moses and Elijah, and in the voice from the bright cloud declaring Jesus your beloved Son, you foreshadowed our adoption as your children. Make us heirs with Christ of your glory, and bring us to enjoy its fullness, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 4

Word FIRST LESSON: EXODUS 24:12-18 The LORD said to Moses, Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction. So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. To the elders he had said, Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them. Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. RESPONSE 8:30 Kanisa Litajengua ( O Who Will Build the Church Now? ) Swahili Song from Kenya 11:00 Refrain: 5

SECOND LESSON: 2 PETER 1:16-21 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please face the cross in procession as the Gospel is proclaimed in our midst. 6

GOSPEL: MATTHEW 17:1-9 The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him! When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, Get up and do not be afraid. And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 7

SEQUENCE HYMN Oh, let the harps break forth in sound! Our joy be all with music crowned, our voices gaily blending! For Christ goes with us all the way today, tomorrow, ev'ry day! His love is never ending! Sing out! Ring out! Jubilation! Exultation! Tell the story! Praise to Christ, who reigns in glory! SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY ELW #316 Oh Wondrous Image, Vision Fair PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Response: Hear our prayer. 9 OFFERTORY PRAYER Let us pray. (Silence) Merciful God, receive the gifts we bring, our selves, our time, and our possessions. Through this meal unite us as your body, shining with the light of your justice and mercy; for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God. through our Savior Jesus Christ; who, sharing our life, lived among us to reveal your glory and love, that our darkness should give way to your own brilliant light. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 9

Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life: Blessed are you for the birth of creation. Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light. Blessed are you for your promise to your people. Blessed are you in the prophets hopes and dreams. Blessed are you for Mary s openness to your will. Blessed are you for your Son Jesus, the Word made flesh. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. 10

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. With this bread and cup we remember your Word dwelling among us, full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection. We look with hope for his coming. Come, Lord Jesus. Holy God, we long for your Spirit. Come among us. Bless this meal. May your Word take flesh in us. Awaken your people. Fill us with your light. Bring the gift of peace on earth. Come, Holy Spirit. All praise and glory are yours, Holy One of Israel, Word of God incarnate, Power of the Most High, one God, now and forever. Amen. Gathered as one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. 11

BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND INVITATION TO THE TABLE The Presider breaks the bread in silence and says: The gifts of God for the people of God. Come, now. All is ready. All are welcome to meet the Risen Jesus in the sharing of bread and cup. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Communion will be around the rail today. You may dip the bread into the red wine or white grape juice, or drink directly from the cup. Gluten-free wafers are available. Ask the server. Those who do not commune are invited and welcome to come forward for a blessing. Ministers are available in the Chapel directly located across the altar area for healing prayers and anointing. If you would like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you. MUSIC DURING COMMUNION 8:30 Sweet Communion Cora L. Jackson ELW #838 ELW #310 ELW #318 Beautiful Savior Songs of Thankfulness and Praise Alleluia, Songs of Gladness 12

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Let us pray. (Silence) Gracious God, in this meal you have drawn us to your heart, and nourished us at your table with food and drink, the body and blood of Christ. Now send us forth to be your people in the world, and to proclaim your truth this day and evermore, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. CHILDREN S WORD Today we bury the Alleluia. Sending BLESSING May the Lord touch and transform you. May the Lord surround you with peace. May the Lord open your eyes to God s presence, surround you with great love, and fill your days with glory; and the blessing of God the Father, Son (+), and Holy Spirit be upon you this day and always. Amen. DISMISSAL Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. POSTLUDE 8:30 As You Go, Tell the World Anonymous 13

Sunday Mornings at 10 AM in the Tree of Life Room This Morning February 26 The Living Word The Word of God is a well-worn phrase. What does it mean? One of Luther s enduring contributions to the life and renewal of the church was his theology of the word. This morning Pastor Nancy Winder will discuss the living word in community, art, music, and service. Next Sunday March 5 Exploring the Psalms In this forum, our Vicar Katherine GrayBuck will lead us in a study of the Psalms. We will explore two psalms in depth, and discover what history, structure, and the Hebrews have to tell us in the Psalms. Come and gain a new understanding of these rich scriptures that have often been used to curse enemies, lament tragedy, explain who God is, and offer praise. 22

Welcome Visitors We welcome all who worship with us today. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us. Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to Men s and Women s rooms there is also a Family room with a changing table. Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form and if there are special sign ups you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service. Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. Office Manager Christina Bogar (or a volunteer) is there to provide information about our church and to receive information such as address, phone or changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program information are located there. Look for the check in desk in the church gathering area. Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportunities for service and study. Join us again! We worship every Sunday at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. and would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often. 23
