The Third Sunday after Epiphany Repent, and believe in the Gospel Mark 1:15 January 22, :30 & 11:00 a.m.
Order of Worship Gathering PRE-SERVICE MUSIC WELCOME THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God s mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. ENTRANCE HYMN #665 Rise, Shine You People APOSTOLIC GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 2
HYMN OF PRAISE Glory to God 3
SALUTATION AND PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Almighty God, by grace alone you call us and accept us in your service. Strengthen us by your Spirit, and make us worthy of your call, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Jonah 3:1 5, 10 The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you. So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days' walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's walk. And he cried out, "Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!" And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. RESPONSE Psalm 62:6 Julian Anderson, Youth Choir Please join in singing the following refrain at the direction of the cantor. SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 7:29 31 I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as 4
though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL VERSE Please rise and join in singing: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 1:14 20 The Holy Gospel according to Mark, the first chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near, repent, and believe in the good news." As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people." And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. PARISH CONCERNS 7
CHILDREN S WORD OFFERING AND OFFERTORY ANTHEM (8:30) I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light setting by Shari Anderson (11:00) Cantate Domino Hans Leo Hassler Sing to the Lord a new song, sing to the Lord, all the earth. Announce God's salvation from day to day. Announce God's glory among the nations and God's wonders among all people. Liturgy of the Meal OFFERTORY PRAYER Let us pray Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen. OPENING DIALOG AND PROPER PREFACE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. It is indeed right and our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. By the leading of a star he was shown forth to all nations; in the waters of the Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son, and in the miracle of water turned to wine he revealed your glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord 8
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Blessed are you, O holy God: you are the Life and Light of all. By your powerful word you created all things. Through the prophets you called your people to be a light to the nations. Blessed are you for Jesus, your Son. He is your Light shining in our darkness and revealing to us your mercy and might. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his preaching and healing, his dying and rising, and his promise to come again, we await that day when all the universe will rejoice in your holy and life-giving light. By your Spirit bless us and this meal, that, refreshed with this heavenly food, we may be light of the world, revealing the brilliance of your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen. 9
LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND INVITATION TO THE TABLE DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION We welcome all who desire to receive the Lord s body and blood for the forgiveness of sin and renewal of life to join us for Holy Communion. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Red wine or white grape juice is available as each communicant chooses. Gluten-free wafers are available. Young children and others who do not commune are invited and welcome to come forward for a blessing. MUSIC DURING THE DISTRIBUTION Lamb of God #758 You Are the Way #810 O Jesus, I Have Promised #661 I Love to Tell the Story #583 Take My Life, That I May Be (last hymn) 10
POST-COMMUNION BLESSING AND PRAYER The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace, now and unto eternal life. Amen. 15 Announcements Welcome Faith and Font Visitors! PRLC is hosting 50 students and congregational leaders from across the country this weekend. Faith and Font is an intensive introduction to the adult catechumenate that we call The WAY. The purpose of Faith and Font is to equip current and future leaders of the church to welcome people into a lifelong process of faith formation. Faith and Font is one way that PRLC extends our ministry to the larger Church. Special thanks to the many PRLC members that make this possible by being hosts for student home stays, serving as catechists, preparing and serving meals, and sharing their own stories of welcome through The WAY. Faith and Font participants will join us for worship at 8:30 on Sunday morning. Please extend a warm Phinney welcome to our guests. Evening Prayer Healing Service Tonight at 7 at Aurora Commons Could you use a calm and restorative beginning to your week? Our monthly evening prayer service with our friends on Aurora will take place tonight at 7pm. As always, we'll meet at the Aurora Commons at 8914 Aurora Ave N (parking available behind the Commons off of 90th). Individual healing prayer and anointing with oil will be available. This Morning in Adult Forum This morning, Raising Families in the Faith will be the topic. This interactive class is designed for all members of the family of faith - not just folks with small children. We will take a walk down memory lane to reflect on the times in our lives when we have been touched by and grown because of our extended church family. And we will explore the ways that families today can be supported by the greater church community and how that community can be enriched by the children in our midst. Congregational Annual Reporting Meeting Our Congregational Annual Reporting Meeting is next Sunday. Spanning the two services on Sunday, January 29, the meeting will include a celebration of our ministries through a Litany of Thanksgiving at the offering as well as prayers for mission completed with God's help and guidance. The business portion of the meeting approving the annual report, approving the budget, and hearing the Lead Pastor's Report will take place in the Sanctuary at 10 a.m. Sign up today on Count Me In if you plan to attend. Regular Sunday School classes will be held for pre-k through Middle School that day. 15
The PRLC Ministries Fair is Coming PRLC will be having a Ministries Fair on February 12 th in between services to show how God is using this congregation to serve our community and to give you an opportunity to become a part of this work that God continues to call us to through the power of the Holy Spirit. Over 40 different ministries will be represented. There will be displays, people to talk to who have been involved in these different ministries, snacks, drinks, and a raffle. So mark February 12 th on your calendars, because you won t want to miss this! Interfaith Advocacy Day in Olympia February 14th It's time again to register for the annual Interfaith Advocacy Day occurring on Tuesday, February 14th. IFAD brings together social justice advocates from faith communities and nonprofits across the state of Washington. The day's activities include workshops on issues such as the state budget, environment, disability services, and housing and homelessness. You'll also participate in legislative briefings, visits with your state legislators, and an interfaith worship. This year the faith community is uniting on Valentine's Day to call on our legislators to unite their hearts and minds and raise revenue instead of cutting funding for programs that support the common good. Join Minister of Outreach Patrick and others from PRLC for this important advocacy moment. Mark the Count Me In form if interested. Tonight with LYONS! Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form and if there are special sign ups you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service. Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. Office Manager Christina Bogar is there to provide information about our church and to receive information such as address, phone or changes, prayer requests and news about illness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program information are located there. Look for the check in desk in the church gathering area. The Latte Cart is open between services on the 200 level, one floor below the sanctuary. Payment for lattes and other specialty beverages is by donation and proceeds are used to support various special projects or ministries. Fair-trade coffee and teas are served. On some Sundays there are treats and fellowship in the Narthex immediately following the service.
