1 AUGUST 3, 2014 SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY GATHERING OPENING SENTENCES Adam DeVries INTROIT (11:00) David Ward For You, My God, I Wait For you, my God, I wait with hope born of the Word. Like sleepless ones who long to dream I wait and call my Lord. O God, You are my hope; I know that You forgive. Your love redeems me from the depths so I may rise and live. VOLUNTARY Rhosymedre Ralph Vaughan Williams *CALL TO WORSHIP (8:30) Stuart Gordon (11:00) Sandra Randleman Leader: Come to the waters; come, eat and drink. People: The Lord gives us food in due season. Leader: Come to Christ; come, eat and be filled. People: When we awake, we shall be satisfied, beholding Your likeness. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN 509 All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly WELCOME AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR DISCIPLESHIP HOLY MANNA Adam DeVries CALL TO CONFESSION (8:30) Stuart Gordon (11:00) Sandra Randleman PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In Your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your holy name.
2 SILENT CONFESSION LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie Eleison ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Gloria Patri Hymn 581 THE WORD AND SACRAMENT ~ Children are invited to come to the front for the baptism. ~ SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM 8:30 Adam DeVries Kate Celauro and Mark Schultz are presenting their son, August Isaac Schultz, for baptism. Assisting Elder: Kathy Celauro 11:00 Stuart Gordon Courtney and Christopher Whitmore are presenting their daughter, Blakely McPherson Whitmore, for baptism. Assisting Elder: Marbut Gaston HYMN FOR BAPTISM TALLIS CANON ANTHEM Softly and Tenderly William L. Thompson Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, Calling for you and for me; See, on the portals He s waiting and watching, Watching for you and for me. Come home, come home, Ye who are weary, come home; Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling, Calling, O sinner, come home! Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading, Pleading for you and for me? Why should we linger and heed not His mercies, Mercies for you and for me? O for the wonderful love He has promised, Promised for you and for me! Though we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon, Pardon for you and for me.
3 PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Anna Wheeler God of mercy, You promised never to break Your covenant with us. Amid all the changing words of our generation, speak Your eternal Word that does not change. Then may we respond to Your gracious promises with faithful and obedient lives; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT SCRIPTURE READING Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. NEW TESTAMENT SCRIPTURE READING Pastor: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Anna Wheeler Genesis 32:22-31, page 30 Adam DeVries Matthew 14:13-21, page 16 Children ages 4 and 5 are invited to Young Children and Worship in Room CW-110. HYMN OF PREPARATION 498 (seated) Loaves Were Broken, Words Were Spoken BEACH SPRING SERMON Mourning Meal RESPONSE OF THE PEOPLE Adam DeVries *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Sam Cooper The Apostles Creed Hymnal Page 35 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER (debts) Hymnal Page 35 OFFERTORY (8:30) Herbert Howells All My Hope on God is Founded All my hope on God is founded; He doth still my trust renew. Me through change and chance he guideth, only good and only true. God unknown, He alone calls my heart to be His own. Pride of man and earthly glory, sword and crown betray his trust; what with care and toil he buildeth, tower and temple, fall to dust. But God s power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. Daily doth the Almighty Giver bounteous gifts on us bestow; His desire our soul delighteth, pleasure leads us where we go. Love doth stand at His hand; joy doth wait on His command. Still from man to God eternal Sacrifice of praise be done, High above all praises praising for the gift of Christ His Son. Christ doth call one and all: ye who follow shall not fall.
4 (11:00) Come and Taste arr. Alice Parker Come and taste along with me consolation flowing free, from the Father s wealthy throne, sweeter than the honeycomb. I ll praise God and you praise God, and we ll all praise God together; We ll praise the Lord for the work that He has done, and we ll bless His name forever. All that come with free good will make the banquet sweeter still; Now I go to Mercy s door, asking for a little more. Goodness, running like a stream through the new Jerusalem, by a constant breaking forth sweetens earth and heaven both. O, return, ye sons of grace, turn and see God s smiling face. Hark, He calls backsliders home, then from Him now longer roam. *PRESENTATION AND RESPONSE Doxology OLD HUNDREDTH *PRAYER OF DEDICATION SENDING FORTH *HYMN OF COMMITMENT 837 What a Fellowship, What a Joy Divine *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE 547 Go, My Children, with My Blessing SHOWALTER Adam DeVries AR HYD Y NOS The congregation will be seated for a moment of silent prayer after the Congregational Response. *CLOSING VOLUNTARY Hyfrydol Ralph Vaughan Williams * Those who are able, please stand Latecomers may be seated Please silence your cell phone as you enter the sanctuary.
