1 JANUARY 19, 2014 SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY SECOND SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY 8:30 and 11:00 AM OPENING SENTENCES GATHERING VOLUNTARY Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ (I Call to You, Lord Jesus Christ) J.S. Bach *CALL TO WORSHIP (8:30) Sandra Randleman (11:00) Stuart Gordon Leader: I waited patiently for the Lord; He inclined to me and heard my cry. People: He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. Leader: He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. People: Happy are those who make the Lord their trust, who put their trust in the Lord. (Psalm 40) *PROCESSIONAL HYMN 276 Great is Thy Faithfulness WELCOME AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR DISCIPLESHIP FAITHFULNESS Todd Jones CALL TO CONFESSION (8:30) Sandra Randleman (11:00) Stuart Gordon PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious God, in a world of constant change, we confess that often we find ourselves uncertain of what is passing and what is truly lasting. Things that once seemed sure and good have disappointed us, and so much of what we have tried to do has failed, or not lived up to our hopes. Some days we do not know what we are looking for, and we have lost our way. Deliver us, O God, from all that is false and full of pretense, and set our feet upon the solid rock of truth and wisdom from on high. Open our ears today to hear Your Word, and fill our hearts with trust and thanksgiving for Your steadfast love and plenteous redemption. Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.
2 SILENT CONFESSION LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie Eleison ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Gloria Patri Hymn 579 THE WORD AND SACRAMENT ~ Children are invited to come to the front for the baptism. ~ SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM (8:30) Sandra Randleman Catherine and Chris Vrettos are presenting their daughter, Cathleen Beasley Vrettos, for baptism. Assisting Elder: Ed Stuart (11:00) Todd Jones Allison and Marty Kaufman are presenting their daughter, Corinne Collier Kaufman, for baptism. Assisting Elder: Marbut Gaston HYMN FOR BAPTISM TALLIS CANON PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION God of mercy, You promised never to break Your covenant with us. Amid all the changing words of our generation, speak Your eternal Word that does not change. Then may we respond to Your gracious promises with faithful and obedient lives; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. SCRIPTURE READINGS Old Testament: Isaiah 49:1-7, page 679 New Testament: John 1:29-42, page 92 Pastor: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Children ages 4 and 5 are invited to Young Children and Worship in Room CW-110.
3 HYMN OF PREPARATION 426 (seated) Lord, Speak to Me, That I May Speak CANONBURY SERMON Come and See Todd Jones RESPONSE OF THE PEOPLE *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (8:30) Mark DeVries (11:00) Stuart Gordon The Apostles Creed (Traditional) Hymnal Page 14 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER (Traditional - debts) Hymnal Page 16 OFFERTORY (8:30) J.R. Daniels How Shall I Sing That Majesty? How shall I sing that majesty which angels do admire? Let dust in dust and silence lie; Sing, sing, ye heavenly choir. Thousands of thousands stand around Thy throne, O God most high; Ten thousand times ten thousand sound Thy praise; But who am I? Thy brightness unto them appears; Whilst I Thy foosteps trace, A sound of God comes to my ears, but they behold Thy face. They sing because Thou art their sun; Lord send a beam on me; For where heaven is but once begun, There alleluias be. Enlighten with faith s light my heart, Inflame it with love s fire; Then shall I sing and bear a part with that celestial choir. I shall, I fear, be dark and cold, with all my fire and light; Yet, when Thou dost accept their gold, Lord, treasure up my mite. How great a being, Lord, is thine, which doth all beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line to sound so vast a deep. Thou art a sea without a shore, a sun without a sphere; Thy time is now and evermore, Thy place is everywhere. (Text by John Mason, from Spiritual Songs, 1683) (11:00) Let the People Praise Thee, O God William Mathias Let the people praise Thee, O God. O let the nations rejoice and be glad, for Thou shalt judge the folk righteously and govern the nations upon earth. Then shall the earth bring forth her increase, and God, even our own God, shall give us His blessing. God shall bless us, and all the ends of the world shall fear Him. God be merciful unto us and bless us, and show us the light of His countenance and be merciful unto us. That Thy way may be known upon earth, Thy saving health among all nations. (Psalm 67) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen. *PRESENTATION AND RESPONSE Doxology OLD HUNDREDTH *PRAYER OF DEDICATION
