1 MARCH 17, 2013 SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT 8:30 and 11:00 AM GATHERING OPENING SENTENCES Todd Jones VOLUNTARY Kyrie, Gott Vater in Ewigkeit, BWV 672 J.S. Bach *CALL TO WORSHIP Sandra Randleman Leader: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the lands. People: Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into His presence with singing. Leader: Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise. People: Give thanks to Him, bless His name. (Psalm 100:1-2,4) *PROCESSIONAL HYMN 288 I Sing the Mighty Power of God WELCOME AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR DISCIPLESHIP ELLACOMBE Todd Jones CALL TO CONFESSION Sandra Randleman PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious God, we confess that our experiences of suffering and disappointment make us doubt Your promised power and peace. Like those who found themselves in exile, we find it hard to sing the Lord s song in a barren and painful place. In the midst of our darkness, we sometimes miss completely Your Light. In our loneliness and isolation, we can miss completely Your nearness. Even as we give thanks for the gift of Your Son, we confess that we live as if this Good News was not meant for us. Cleanse us of all doubt and despair, and heal us by Your merciful Spirit. Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. Amen. SILENT CONFESSION

BOOKMARKS AUTHOR OF THE MONTH Stuart Gordon s Author of the Month is George Herbert. Herbert was a poet and a pastor in 17th century England and a man considered to be one of the greatest of English poets. His sacred poetry is beautiful in its own right, but also serves as rich devotional reading for Christians. It is no coincidence that a large portion of Scripture is poetic in form; to speak of the things of God requires every resource of language at our disposal. George Herbert is one of the great witnesses to God in the English language. The Complete English Poems of George Herbert is available in Bookmarks.
