MUSIC NOTES Aaron Copland s stirring Fanfare for the Common Man was commissioned in 1942 by Eugene Goossens, conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, to boost morale during World War II. The American poet and abolitionist Julia Ward Howe wrote the words to the equally iconic Battle Hymn of the Republic after visiting a Union army camp in Virginia in These works have since been performed at many significant state and religious occasions, and their inclusion in today s service is a nod to the right patriotism of which the Prayer of Confession speaks. FLOWERS on the chancel table are given to the glory of God by Jean and Phil Barksdale and in loving memory of their daughter-in-law, Josephine Andrews Barksdale.

MISSION MINISTRY n TONS OF LOVE, RICE PACKING PROJECT ON JULY 17 Children and Youth will pack TWO TONS of rice into family-sized bags during the Sunday School hour in The Gathering Place. Adult classes that have taken a break for the summer are invited to join in this family-friendly, multi-generational service activity. FPC Mission Campers will pack another ton of rice on Thursday, July 21, from 12:30 1:30 P.M. if you have a conflict on Sunday and want to join. Rice packages will be donated to food pantries in rural Middle Tennessee. n DOMINICAN REPUBLIC MISSION TRIP This trip, October 29 November 4, will provide medical services in neighborhood locations or provide construction labor on a new clinic building. Physicians, dentists, nurses and other medical personnel are needed along with non-medical participants. Cost is $1,250; $800 deposit and copy of your passport due September 15. Dr. Jim Cato is trip leader.
