Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel! CALL TO CONFESSION (8:30) Mark DeVries (11:00) Sandra Randleman PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy and Merciful God, we confess this day that we do not always walk in Your light, but prefer to hide our sins in the shadows, hoping to cover them even from ourselves. We are too easily impressed with the high, the mighty and those with whom the world is impressed, while we look down upon the lowly
2 and do not even notice the poor. We have great faith in human efforts and little patience with Your ways, which are not always our ways. Forgive us and deliver us from trusting in anything other than You, O Lord. Strengthen our hearts by the Holy Spirit, so that we may be ready to greet Jesus when He appears. Amen. SILENT CONFESSION CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE HYMN 44 O Little Town of Bethlehem ST. LOUIS O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel! ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Gloria in excelsis Deo; Gloria in excelsis Deo. GLORIA THE WORD AND SACRAMENT ANTHEM (11:00) Carol of the Children John Rutter One for the star in the sky over Bethlehem; Two for the hands that will rock him to sleep; Three for the kings bringing gold, bringing myrrh, bringing incense; Four for the angels that watch over his bedside. Blue for the robe of the sweet Virgin Mary; White for the dawn of the first Christmas Day; Red for the blood that he shed for us all on Good Friday; Black for the tomb where he rested till Easter. Lullaby! He soon will awake, for the oxen are stirring and morning will break One for the heart, one for the heart that I give as my offering to Jesus. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Todd Jones God, source of all light, by Your Word You give light to the soul. Pour out upon us the spirit of wisdom and understanding that, being taught by You in Holy Scripture, our hearts and minds may be opened to know the things that pertain to life and holiness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
