3 Page 3 October 2, 2016 From our pastoral coordinator Dear Friends, This weekend, we will begin our Children s Liturgy of the Word at the 10 am Mass commonly referred to as CLOW. A small group of adult catechists offer their time and talents to prepare and present an age appropriate message based on the readings of the day. The children are dismissed from Mass following the opening prayer and return at the offertory. Children s liturgy is a catechetical tool that prepares for the reception of first Communion and teaches children how to fully live the liturgy. We all participate, too, by our example as a parish community in the experience of Mass for our children and for each other. In the Vatican II Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, our participation at Mass is encouraged to be full, active and conscious. It s a catchy phrase that we have most likely heard before, but it can be a big challenge! In our society, we are used to things moving fast text and for instant responses, we have hundreds of choices for radio or TV stations and we can flip between them rapidly to make sure we aren t missing something, heck, we can fly half way around the world in a matter of hours. It s no wonder we have trouble being quiet, slowing our hearts and our minds, and tuning into the voice of God at Mass. Mass is more than another appointment on our calendar, a weekly obligation to be checked off our list. We come to Mass and join our prayers together with the communion of saints. We intercede for our family and friends, the church, and the world. As we enter the church building and bless ourselves with holy water, let s try to consciously set aside our sense of hurry, the scramble it sometimes takes to get here, and quiet ourselves to listen, pray, and prepare to receive the source and summit of our faith, the Eucharist. We are united to Christ, to one another as a parish community and as a church in this holy moment. Children s Liturgy of the Word starts this weekend, and with it, we are in invited to enter more fully into the liturgy too. A special thanks to all the volunteers who make this program possible, and to each and every member of this parish for sharing your unique gifts with us. Let s continue to pray for one another. WOMEN'S MINISTRY We will host a Meet-and-Greet this Tuesday, October 4th from 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the Parish Center living room. Our Ministry meets the first Tuesday of each month, gathering to practice our faith through group discussions. This year we will be focusing on Joan Chittister's book Welcome to the Wisdom of the World. Join us in fun and friendship as we support each other in trying to live out our spirituality daily. FRANCIS OF ASSISI & BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS On Tuesday, October 4 th we celebrate the Memorial of St. Francis of Assisi. Born the son of a wealthy merchant, a conversion led him to give up his inheritance and minister to lepers and preach to the spiritually hungry. His home was the earth, his clothing, humility. Francis is one of the most popular saints in church history, due to his love of creation. Please join Fr. Bryan by bringing your pets to a blessing after the 10:00 AM Mass today (approx. 11:30 AM) or tomorrow at 3:00 PM in front of the school as we honor St. Francis and all creation with this Blessing of the Animals.

The signup sheet is in the cafeteria and is waiting for you to sign up. There is not a cost, the church purchases all of the refreshments (donuts, coffee and juice). We need your help as the coffee hour is now the destination for Benny s Faithful Art Corner for the kids, so let s keep it going! WELCOME TO OUR WEEKLY CAPITAL CAMPAIGN CORNER! Invitations were mailed to every parish and school family last week, asking that you attend one of five special campaign presentations. If you haven t already done so, please check your mail! We would like every parish and school family to attend. Please let us know which presentation you will be attending! PLEASE RSVP!!. There are many ways to RSVP: Return the RSVP card by U.S. Mail, bring it to the Parish or School Office, place it in the Sunday Collection Basket at Mass or your reply to RSVP@stbens.net By letting us know that you will be attending, our reception volunteer can plan for the right amount of seating and refreshments. The presentation will cover details of the facility improvement plans such as specific construction projects, timelines, costs, revenue and our capital campaign. We will also talk about how the improvements play into the long-term plan and vision for St. Benedict. You will not be asked to return a pledge card at this meeting. But you will be given a campaign brochure and pledge card to bring home so that you can consider your involvement in the campaign. We look forward to seeing you! We will be sorting and packing food at the South Park warehouse. Here's all you have to do: Meet at St. Benedict at 5:00 PM, don t wear open-toe shoes. Our ministry group meets the first and third Monday s of the month to make sandwiches for the 225 homeless men of the shelter. In an effort to keep the ministry alive, we are seeking both monetary funds and volunteers. If each parish family donated $5.00 per month, we will be able to continue to make a difference. We accept donations of boiled eggs and cookies and are always seeking sandwich makers Our next sandwich making day is tomorrow, Monday September 19 th and we would love to have you join us in this vital ministry. Faith formation FIGHTING HUNGER IN WALLINGFORD 2016 We are closing in on 6000 pounds as our food bank total stands at a total of 5,831 pounds up to last week. We have less than 4 months to make up the deficit left from the summer months. Please keep the donations coming in and remember grab an order form (in the vestibule) for donating while shopping at QFC. Our goal of 10,000 pounds for 2016 is in site. FamilyWorks thanks you for your heartfelt donations to this program as we combine efforts to try and stamp out hunger one community at a time! PEACEFUL CRAFTERS The Peaceful Crafters would like to thank everyone for their support of our parish craft group. We had a record year and will be able to give the scholarship fund a nice boost. Now that we are done with the Wurstfest, we would like you to join us on Thursday mornings at 9:30 AM as we begin our holiday project of Boxes of Joy for the women s shelters. CYO PANTHER PRIDE NIGHT Seattle Prep will be hosting a Panther Pride Night on Friday, October 7 th for CYO students and their families as the Panthers host Lakeside at West Seattle Stadium. CABRINI MINISTRY TRAINING DEADLINE IS NEAR Would you like to BRING MERCY, BE PRESENT, & CHANGE LIVES?
