3 Page 2 October 11, 2015 From deacon Roy s desk Dear sisters and brothers in Christ: The Holy Spirit continues to enliven the parish in so many ways. The most visible ways are those that show how both individuals and families are responding to live more deeply their faith lives as Christians, as Catholics. Let me give you two examples. Yesterday I had the pleasure of blessing the ten-year marriage of a couple in the parish. We had a lovely convalidation ceremony with their family and friends present and then we celebrated the baptism of their ten-month old daughter! Also, this week, three young women between the ages of 8 and 12 have come forward seeking the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion. With the support of their parents, they are wanting to take the next step towards full initiation into the Church. They will begin studying with a catechist in the coming weeks and then will receive these two sacraments in late November with the whole parish present. If either of these two examples resonate with you or remind you of yourself or someone you know who has similar sacramental needs, please don t hesitate to contact me! We would love to have other young people join in the sacraments and I would love to bless any couple who have not yet been sacramentally married in the Church. Like the young man in today s Gospel, the Lord always invites those with loving, caring hearts to go more deeply to enter into a stronger relationship with Him. How is he calling you or someone you know? Blessings. Your servant in Christ, Deacon Roy Harrington, Pastoral Coordinator Worship and spiritual life MEMORIAL CANDLES FOR ALL SOULS NOVENA Memorial Candles will be available after all Masses on Sunday s October 18 th and 25 th. These personalized candles will be lit and displayed in the church starting on the feast of Departed Souls, November 2 nd and throughout the Novena. The suggested donation is $ Candles and Mass intentions are also available at the Parish Center for you to commemorate your loved ones. ST. CALLISTUS I Following a life of slavery and hard labor, St. Callistus I was appointed deacon in charge of the Christian cemetery on the Appian Way, now called the catacomb of San Callisto. Recognized for his abounding wisdom and natural bent for leadership, he was eventually elected pope. He had many critics, due to his liberal stance regarding the forgiveness of those who had apostatized during times of persecution. St. Callistus, heeding the commands of Christ, believed the repentant should be forgiven and welcomed back into the Church. Tradition maintains that he began the Ember Days, periods of fasting and abstinence, which are no longer observed among Catholics. He is commemorated as a martyr; he was probably killed during a public disturbance. (2015 Sourcebook pg. 303) ST. TERESA OF JESUS More commonly known as St. Teresa of Avila, Teresa joined the Carmelite Convent of the Incarnation at the age of 21. Disheartened by convent life, in particular, its spiritual laxity, opulent nature, and overly social atmosphere, she began a reform movement that provided the framework for the Discalced Carmelites. Members of this new branch of Carmelites modeled themselves on the poor and crucified Christ, adopting a life of poverty and abstinence. In collaboration with St. John of the Cross, Teresa helped bring this new way of life to the male Carmelite communities. Their reforms met with great resistance, but they moved forward with faith and persistence. (2015 Sourcebook pg. 304) LOOKING FOR A SENSE OF PURPOSE? Are you being called to share the gospel of joy more intentionally? Are you ready to be transformed spiritually? Cabrini Ministry Training provides valuable skills needed to share Christ s love with those in need, and it will change your life! CMT includes classes on active listening, prayer, understanding feelings, and specific types of pastoral ministry. It consists of weekly classes held at St. James Cathedral that run from October-March. For more information, contact carla@cabriniministry.org or call X3 ST. IGNATIUS Born in the year 50 and died somewhere between 98 and 117 in Rome, Ignatius was and Apostolic Father and possible disciple of John the Evangelist. He served the community of Antioch as bishop. Living during the anti-christian reign of the Roman emperor Trajan, he was sentenced to be fed to animals in the Roman colosseum because he refused to engage in idol worship. His journey to Rome was marked by extensive writing in which he composed seven letters. These letters, directed to various churches, emphasized the humanity and divinity of Christ, the centrality of Eucharist, and the importance of Church unity. (2015 Sourcebook pg. 305) ST. HEDWIG & ST. MARGARET MARY ALACOQUE Hedwig married the Duke of greater Poland, with whom she lived a pious life. Together they founded a Cistercian convent, which Hedwig entered when she was widowed. Margaret Mary Alacoque was a French Visitation nun and mystic who promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In a series of visions, the form of this devotion was revealed: Holy communion on the first Friday of each month and the institution of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart. Margaret Mary was criticized by the nuns but had the support of the community s confessor, Blessed Claude de la Colombiere. (2015 Sourcebook pg. 304)
4 Page 3 October 11, 2015 stewardship STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE In today s Gospel, Jesus asks the rich young man to give away all that he has in order to have treasure in heaven. But he is unable to free himself from his possessions, and so he goes sadly away. Does what I own keep me from following Jesus? Access to hygiene and laundry is limited. The socks disintegrate under these conditions. New socks are a tangible and immediate relief to homeless people. They are always received with great joy and thanksgiving. Stop by, drop off new socks and take a tour if you want, and learn more about Nightwatch. We are located at th Ave S, Seattle, WA. Place donated socks in food baskets. RACHEL S CORNER HOPE AND HEALING AFTER ABORTION "This retreat was a light at the end of the tunnel.
