3 Page 2 November 15, 2015 From deacon Roy s desk Sisters and brothers in Christ: This weekend, we recognize our October Volunteer of the Month, Walter Neves. Walter is one of the most humble, hardworking people I have ever known. He is a behind-the-scenes kind of guy, volunteering wherever he is needed. In fact he volunteers during the week at several churches including St. James Cathedral which is the 2 nd Church for all of us. Here at St. Benedict, Walter serves as a sacristan and most importantly, he cleans the Church after every Sunday evening mass. Long after we are all gone and home having dinner, Walter is here washing windows, sweeping floors, rearranging cards in the pews, vacuuming and doing whatever is needed. He is such a great example of a humble servant that you will be hard pressed to find him in order to thank him. Walter joined the Catholic Church several years ago after waiting nearly forty years to become a Catholic. He was attracted to the teachings of the Church as a teenager but didn t feel worthy of becoming a fully initiated Catholic and receiving the Sacraments. Such humility is unique in our world and I appreciate what a great example Walter s quiet, humble service is to all of us. Please join me in congratulating Walter Neves as our October 2015 Volunteer of the Month. Thanks for all you do, Walter! Blessings to you all. Your servant, Deacon Roy Worship and spiritual life ST. MARGARET OF SCOTLAND As the wife of King Malcolm III of Scotland, Margaret managed to raise eight children while promoting Church reform, especially in the area of liturgical practice. As a woman of great faith, she founded and restored monasteries, provided hospitality to pilgrims, spoke out on behalf of the falsely accused, and fed the poor from her own dining table. All of her charitable activity was grounded in a strong prayer life. (2015 Sourcebook pg. 320) ST. ROSE PHILIPPINE DUCHESNE Beginning her life as a nun in the Order of the Visitation in France, Rose eventually joined the Society of the Sacred Heart, founded by St. Madeleine Sophie Barat. Due to her missionary zeal, she was sent, along with five other sisters, to St. Louis, Missouri, to care for the poor and educate Native Americans, Under her leadership, the sisters established numerous schools and orphanages. She is remembered for her remarkable work, including evangelization and catechesis with Native Americans, particularly the Potawatomi people. Recognizing her extraordinary ministry, amazing ability to navigate difficulties and profound spirituality, a contemporary said, She was the Saint Francis of Assisi of the Society. (2015 Sourcebook pgs ) BE PART OF THE LITURGY We are looking for Parishioners that are interested in volunteering to be Sacristans, Altar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers, Greeters and Ushers. If you have always wanted to serve the Lord in this way or are interested in seeing if this is for you, call the Parish Office at and let us know what you may be interested in doing. This is a wonderful way to serve our Lord and your church community by getting more involved in services. Dn. Roy and Fr. Dolejsi are planning a Liturgical Minister Training in the near future to refresh memories and touch up skills for all who want to serve at Mass. Make the decision to move forward and be more active in our community. Talk to someone that is already serving, you will be glad you did. ST. GERTRUDE THE GREAT Gertrude was a nun at the Benedictine monastery of Helfta, the abbey where two other great female spiritual writers lived: Mechtild of Magdeburg and St. Mechtild (Matilda von Hackeborn- Wippra). Through prayer she was graced with many mystical and ecstatic experiences, which are recorded in a five-volume work entitled Legatus divinae pietatis, commonly called The Life and Revelations of Saine Gertrude the Great. Her spirituality focused on the humanity of Christ and was characterized by a strong devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. According to many scholars, St. Gertrude s writings should be shelved with other influential mystics, such as St. Teresa of Avila. (2015 Sourcebook pgs ) ST. ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY Elizabeth was the Queen of Hungary and mother of four children, had a special love for the downtrodden. She built a hospital in the basement of her castle, nursed the sick, fed the hungry, and provided life-giving work for the poor. After the death of her husband, she took the habit of a Franciscan tertiary (Third Order Franciscan), devoting herself to a life of simplicity and almsgiving. Along with her selfless service to those in need, she actively pursued God through prayer and spiritual discipline. St. Elizabeth is the patron saint of Franciscan tertiaries, bakers, beggars, brides, the homeless, and charities (among others). (2015 Sourcebook pg. 321) JUST A REMINDER As we enter a time of Thanksgiving and Advent only a couple of weeks away, we want to remind you that the Church is open for prayer Monday thru Thursday from 7:00 AM to 2:45 PM. You can stop in for prayer, reflection to light a candle and spend a few minutes with the Lord. Also, remember that Wednesday night Mass is at 6:30 PM each week to give you that one more opportunity to attend Mass. Stop by on the way home and join Fr. Dolejsi in prayer and Thanksgiving.
