3 Page 3 January 31, 2016 Dear sisters and brothers: From deacon Roy s desk This week we celebrate Catholic Schools Week and it will be a great time. Working with the students and teachers is the very best part of my duties as the pastoral coordinator and it brings back lots of fond memories of my days at St. Francis Xavier Parish School in Spokane from 1st through 3rd grade and then Holy Family Parish School in Yakima where I graduated from 8th grade. Unfortunately, both my childhood Catholic schools are closed now but I m so thankful for the legacy they gave me. I pray that we never take our parish school for granted and I thank you all for filling out the written survey that was handed out in Church last weekend and mailed home to the school families. Your input is most valuable in determining the scope of and support for the proposed multi-purpose center that will serve the needs of the school and parish for years to come. The results of the survey and live interviews with Kris Wallace, our consultant, will be published soon. Mr. Brian Anderson and I will keep you well informed about the survey results and how the project might unfold. Thank you for your continuing support and prayers for our students and our school! Go Bears! (Yes, we are the St. Benedict Bears!!) Your brother in Christ, Deacon Roy Worship & spiritual life FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD This feast day celebrated on Tuesday is rooted in everyday life. In faithful observance of the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph present Jesus in the Temple to consecrate him to the Lord. There they met the righteous Simeon and the prophet Anna, for whom Temple worship was part of everyday life. God rewarded their fidelity by allowing them to see the one who was Savior and to hold him in their arms. When the ceremony of presentation was completed, Mary and Joseph returned to their hometown. There, they created a home and a family life. There, Jesus grew up, becoming strong and wise, and the grace of God was upon him. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 71) ST. BLAISE & ST. ANSGAR Although they were separated by time, both Blaise (316) and Ansgar ( ) wanted to care for souls. While serving as Bishop of Sebastea, in Armenia, St. Blaise was a visible witness of the Gospel, which eventually led to his martyrdom during the persecutions of Diocletian. His feast day is commemorated with a blessing of the throats because legend says that he cured a young boy choking on a fish bone. St. Ansgar, born in France, was a monk with a missionary spirit. He longed to travel to distant lands to draw more souls to the saving message of Christ. His missionary endeavors were directed toward Scandinavian territory, thus earning him the title Patron of Denmark. He is credited with organizing missions to Denmark, Sweden, Norway and building the first Christian church in Sweden. He was an excellent leader and preacher which elevated him to an appointment as the Archbishop of Hamburg. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 74) DAY OF MERCY AT ST. JAMES CATHEDRAL Saturday March 5th, is one of the high points of the Jubilee for Mercy in the Archdiocese of Seattle, when Archbishop Sartain, Bishop Eusebio and priests from the archdiocese will hear confessions throughout the day at St. James Cathedral. Confessions will be heard in multiple languages from 9 AM - 5 PM. Each hour will begin with music and a brief prayer. All are encouraged to participate in the celebration and the sacrament of mercy during the Jubilee of Mercy. UNDERSTAND THE GOSPEL OF JOHN FEBRUARY 24 TH AT 7:00PM Following the 6:30 PM Mass, Fr. Dolejsi will provide an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the unique gift of the Gospel of John. This class will look at the differences and similarities with the other Gospels, better understand the seven signs employed by the author, and reflect more deeply on scripture as the source of our theology. ST. AGATHA Agatha was born in Sicily, around the year 231 and is one of the women mentioned by name in Eucharistic Prayer I. According to legend, she was the daughter of a prominent family and was very beautiful. The Roman senator Quintianus wished to marry her, but when Agatha spurned him, he had her put in a brothel. In spite of this, Agatha held to her Christian faith, Quintianus then had her tortured by having her breasts cut off. She eventually died in prison in 253. St. Agatha is the patron of the city of her martyrdom, Catania, and is invoked against the fire, earthquakes, and eruptions of Mount Tena. In recent years, because her breasts were cut off as part of her torture, she is considered the patron saint of breast cancer patients. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 75) ST. PAUL MIKI A Jesuit priest, was one of the twenty-six martyrs of Japan. Feeling threatened by the growing influence of Jesuits, the local governor had members of the Christian community arrested and thrown in jail. They were forced to walk 600 miles from Kyoto to Nagasaki as a deterrent to other Christians, but they sang the Te Deum as they went. At Nagasaki they were crucified. When Christian missionaries returned to Japan in the nineteenth century, they found that a secret Christian community had survived by transmitting their beliefs and prayers from generation to generation. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 75) SISTERS OF OUR LADY OF MERCY Invited by the Archbishop for a week in Lent from St. Faustina s congregation to proclaim the message of the infinite mercy of God. They will travel in the company of first-class relics of St. Faustina and St. John Paul II, carrying the good news of mercy to every corner of our Archdiocese. See their schedule posted on the bulletin board in the vestibule.
