3 Page 3 September 25, 2016 From our pastoral coordinator Dear Friends, The fall weather has arrived and the change is palpable. Just getting dressed in the morning is different. Warmer sweaters, thick socks, and boots have replaced t-shirts and sandals. This time of year always makes me want to curl up with a good book in front of a fire. I feel blessed to have a home with a fireplace and a comfy chair to relax in at the end of a busy day. In fact, as I m writing this, I m longing for that peaceful place and posture. So when I read the readings for today, as I always do while preparing to write this column, I was surprised and a little unsettled Woe to the complacent stretched comfortably on their couches. WAIT, God doesn t want me to read by the fire? Well, that doesn t seem quite right. But I do think that the readings today are meant to make us a little uncomfortable. In the gospel, we hear about the rich man and his unfortunate situation tormented in the netherworld. He can see Lazarus, the beggar from the doorstep, at the side of Father Abraham. He SAW Lazarus, and wanted him to ease his suffering. But did he really SEE Lazarus every day at his door as he came and went, living a full life of wealth and privilege? Today s readings remind us to be aware of our many blessings and attentive to ways that our possessions can become stumbling blocks that can distract us from living as disciples of Jesus. Wealth in itself is not evil, it s our attitude toward it that can cause problems for us. When we become so comfortable that we cannot see the needs of others, or recognize the suffering as we pass by them, then it is a stumbling block. We are called to share what we have. When we recognize all we have as a gift from God, seeing ourselves as stewards of the gifts we have received, then giving comes easy. Giving means more than money, food or things. It also means time, attention, presence and prayer. We give as we see needs and discern the response God desires from us. As the season changes, and we are warm and comfortable in our homes, let s be mindful of those who don t have a roof over their heads or creature comforts of any kind, aware of the lonely and forgotten, and the ones who may think themselves invisible. As individuals and as a parish community, we are called to love and serve others - to share what we have with those who are in most need. When we do that, we keep our material possessions in the right perspective and are able to ease the suffering of others. This is the life of a disciple, and this is the life of the Church. VINCENT de PAUL Born a French peasant Vincent was ordained in1600. As a parish priest in Paris, he founded a home for foundlings because it upset him to see so many babies abandoned by parents unable to care for them. He founded the Daughters of Charity with Louise de Marillac and the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians or Lazarists), both dedicated to helping the poor and visiting prisons. Monsieru Vincent, as he was called, became a popular figure in Paris and, in spite of his visits to people such and Cardinal Richelieu, he maintained his simple lifestyle and manner of dress. He knew Lazarus, perhaps walked by him every time he cae in or out, but did nothing to relieve his suffering. Is there a Lazarus in my life? Invitations were mailed to every parish and school family last week, asking that you attend one of five special campaign presentations. If you haven t already done so, please check your mail! We would like every parish and school family to attend. Please let us know which presentation you will be attending! PLEASE RSVP!!. There are many ways to RSVP: Return the RSVP card by U.S. Mail, bring it to the Parish or School Office, place it in the Sunday Collection Basket at Mass or your reply to RSVP@stbens.net By letting us know that you will be attending, our reception volunteer can plan for the right amount of seating and refreshments. The presentation will cover details of the facility improvement plans such as specific construction projects, timelines, costs, revenue and our capital campaign. We will also talk about how the improvements play into the long-term plan and vision for St. Benedict. You will not be asked to return a pledge card at this meeting. But you will be given a campaign brochure and pledge card to bring home so that you can consider your involvement in the campaign. We look forward to seeing you! This year was a bit more exciting (and wet) than most years as we dodged the rain and guarded against the wind. All in all it was a wonderful, if not busy and tiring weekend. The Wurst Fest could not have happened without the efforts of ALL our school and parish community I would like to recognize the entire Wurst Committee for their hard work and organization, not just over the past weekend but throughout the entire year. Some very special recognition also goes to Brian Beach, the committee chairman, who inherited his position in June. Thank you for your enthusiasm and leadership! Our ministry group meets the first and third Monday s of the month to make sandwiches for the 225 homeless men of the shelter. In an effort to keep the ministry alive, we are seeking both monetary funds and volunteers. If each parish family donated $5.00 per month, we will be able to continue to make a difference. We accept donations of boiled eggs and cookies and are always seeking sandwich makers Our next sandwich making day is tomorrow, Monday September 19 th and we would love to have you join us in this vital ministry. Faith formation FIGHTING HUNGER IN WALLINGFORD 2016 We are closing in on 6000 pounds as our food bank total stands at a total of 5,831 pounds up to last week. We have less than 4 months to make up the deficit left from the summer months. Please keep the donations coming in and remember grab an order form (in the vestibule) for donating while shopping at QFC. Our goal of 10,000 pounds for 2016 is in site. FamilyWorks thanks you for your heartfelt donations to this program as we combine efforts to try and stamp out hunger one community at a time! PEACEFUL CRAFTERS The Peaceful Crafters would like to thank everyone for their support of our parish craft group. We had a record year and will be able to give the scholarship fund a nice boost.
