SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME GOSPEL REFLECTION RECONCILIATION Parish Center Conference Room, Saturday: 3:15-3:45 PM What an audience Jesus has in today's Gospel! "A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of people from all over Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon." Disciples, pagans, and devout Jews gathered together to hear Jesus speak in the Sermon on the Mount. All of these people had something in common. God was someone to be bargained with, and if God liked you, you were rewarded with good fortune. This Sunday, Jesus tells us a different story. "Woe to you who are rich? who are filled now? who laugh? when all speak well of you. Blessed are you who are poor? you who are now hungry? when people hate you and when they exclude you and insult you." Jesus completely flips the script on what it means to be blessed by God. What he proclaims as "woe" are states of life we often strive for, and "blessed" are the states we work hard to avoid! ANOINTING OF THE SICK After the 4:00 PM Saturday Mass; or contact Parish Office. BULLETIN NOTICES should be proposed, by if possible, to the Parish Office by Monday morning. Jesus is concerned with the kingdom of God and the world to come, not the typical structures of power and privilege. The word "now" appears often in these statements. Why? If you are well "now," that's beside the point. To be rich in this life has no direct bearing on your immortal soul. If you're struggling "now," that's not an indication that God has forgotten you or that - in light of eternity - you're worse off than someone else. In fact, it could be an indicator that you're enduring something that will bring you to a place of greater, eternal joy in the future. This Sunday, consider your priorities. Who do we reject as not blessed, and thereby inflict woe upon ourselves? When we encounter difficult situations in our own lives, do we see them as opportunities to remember God and lean on His mercy and grace?

With St. Julia Lenten Prayer Circle you can sign up for one day in Lent to pray for requested intentions. Pray at church, pray at home, pray anywhere, at any time. (Lk 6:37) LIVE THE LITURGY Getting ahead in the world is something many see as important. Success, a comfortable life, and worldly securities are seen as what is needed to achieve happiness. Whether or not we like to admit it, these pursuits are operative in many of our lives. As much as we want to believe in the Gospel, we also find it hard not to cling to these other things. Unconditional trust in God must be first if we are going to perceive the kingdom of God. And while God does not want us to go out of our way to be miserable, Jesus clearly gives preference to those who are poor, hungry, weeping, marginalized, vulnerable, and despised. When people encounter these things, they touch God. It teaches us not to get too comfortable with our riches and that there is much more to true life than the stuff we find so important. 5 GRADES 1-6 February 17/18; 24/25: No Classes March 3/4: Classes; on Sunday Gr. 3 will host Mass and Café Julia Did you know...that the Beatitudes Jesus taught on the mountain in the Gospel of Matthew are a little different from the Beatitudes taught on the land in the Gospel of Luke? Matthew s Beatitudes tend to teach more about our spiritual condition, where Luke is focused more on the physical sense. (Matthew s Blessed are the poor in spirit vs. Luke s Blessed are the poor.) Beatitude means Blessing. In Luke s Gospel, Jesus is telling us that those who suffer on earth are blessed, because when they live in the eternal life, they will not have any suffering at all! Then he says woe to those who are not suffering, for they may suffer in eternal life! What does that mean for any of us who are fairly well off? Will we suffer eternally? Yikes!! That s not what Jesus is saying. There are many wealthy people in the world who will most likely live eternally in heaven. The difference is that wealthy people with wisdom understand that the wealth they have was given to them through the grace of God, because God has a plan for how they are to spend that money. Wise people understand that any gifts received from God are expected to be shared. If God gave you a nice singing voice, join the choir and help others sing to God at Mass. If you love children, teach them about God. If you have extra money, give to the poor and the hungry. These Holy Moments of Love will help each of us to live an eternal life of peaceful joy. YOUTH MINISTRY NO CLASSES THIS WEEKEND OR NEXT (FEB 24) BUT JR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES RESUME MARCH 3RD For all those teens who are being confirmed in April: Please schedule a mentor meeting by ing Colm at cmcgarry@stjulia.org. Best times are Sunday through Thursday, and especially during the February vacation. All High School students are invited to register for one of the 2 classes offered this cycle by ing Colm. The Choices for the Spring are Morality or Creed. Teens and their parents are encouraged to consider including retreats and service in their faith formation. Our encounter with Jesus was never intended to be an academic exercise and substituting classes for these opportunities is encouraged. For Jr High School students STAND takes place March 2nd, from 10 am - 7pm,at St brigid's in Lexington. For High school ABIDE will be a popular choice for local teens and it happens Good Friday and Holy Saturday, April 19th and 20th. Additionally 9-12th Grade students are invited to an overnight retreat with teens from Good Shepherd in Wayland. Confirmation students may earn credits for attending God Vibes Retreat on Friday, March 5PM Saturday, March 5PM St. Zepherin Center/Parish Office Building. A 24-hour retreat of authentic faith and friendship open to students in grades Suggested Donation of $60 to Youth Ministry to help cover meals/activities. Sign up with Colm at cmcgarry@stjulia.org

6 Helping Hands - A Generations of Faith Event Sunday, March 24 We have two ways you can do this you are welcome to do either one, or both! 1. Come join us in learning about St. Julia Parish history of Service, and help package meals for hungry families in Burkina Faso, through the Catholic Relief Services - Helping Hands, on March 24. Sign up for a session (1:15 or 2:00) on our website, or contact Cindy Harrington. 2. Help sponsor the cost of the food and other supplies sent to Burkino Faso. We need to raise at least $5, As of February 6, we have only raised $750. Help! Checks are to be made payable to St. Julia Parish, earmarked CRS-Helping Hands.
