3 Page 3 June 12, 2016 From deacon Roy s desk Dear friends: Transitions, transitions, transitions. The 8th graders have departed for high school adventures, the 7th graders are stepping up into new leadership roles for next year, and teachers prepare to depart for lots and lots of good reasons new babies, new marriages, new jobs and sabbaticals! The parish staff continues to prepare for end of month transitions as well. You can read Marti Lundberg s biography in today s bulletin. She is a great lay ecclesial leader in the Church with many gifts to share here at St. Benedict. I know you all will welcome her as warmly as you did me two years ago. I have one additional parish staff transition to announce: Lilly McGarry, our Pastoral Assistant for Administration and Stewardship for the past 13 months, has chosen to take a new position at Christ the King Parish (where she has worked before and the parish where Marti currently serves). This is a great move for Lilly as she lives a few blocks over from the parish.what a great commute, huh? She has done a superb job here at St. Benedict in streamlining many of our procedures, creating our new fancy and functional website, and making us more efficient in so many ways. Lilly will be much missed by all of us. Marti originally served as Pastoral Assistant for Administration at Christ the King before stepping into the role of Pastoral Coordinator. She is uniquely qualified to hire and train Lilly s replacement which will be here first task when she arrives in July. Your family too may have transitions in the near future. I know that we have several school families who are leaving for new cities across the country and we wish them all safe travels and a bright future in these new endeavors. Thanks for all you have contributed to the life of the school and the parish in your time here with us. I ll write more next week about what my future holds..still to be determined where I will be doing my hospital chaplain residency in the fall.stay tuned!! Blessings always. Your brother in Christ, Deacon Roy Worship & spiritual life HAVE YOU CONSIDERED... Our church is in need of Sacristans. The Sacristan is the lead person for our Liturgies. This person prepares the church for Mass by opening the church on Sunday, turning on the lights, preparing the gifts and making sure all that are scheduled have shown up and are prepared. If this is you, call the Parish Office and volunteer. You can serve once a month or more and Fr. Bryan will gladly train you to give you the confidence to serve our community. CALL TO ORDERS Here is the information for this year s last two ordinations: Join Bishop Elizondo at 11:00 AM on June 18th, St. Bernadette Church in Seattle to ordain as Deacon, Jeffrey Moore then at 5:00 PM he will ordain Chris Hoiland as Deacon at St. Charles Borromeo in Tacoma. On Saturday June 25 th at 10:00 AM, Michael Dion, Kyle Manglona, Cody Ross and Patrick Sherrard will be ordained into the priesthood at St. James Cathedral in Seattle by Archbishop Sartain. BECAUSE EVERYONE DESERVES TO BE HEARD Do you have a desire to offer a compassionate presence and listening ear to others experiencing isolation or affliction? Cabrini Ministry Training can equip you with the tools you need to be an effective instrument of Christ s love. This fall we will offer a 20-week class in Kirkland on Tuesday afternoons, and a 5-session, all-day class in Seattle on Saturdays. For more information, go to info@cabriniministry.org, or call x3. ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA Anthony ( ), a member of a noble Portuguese family, wrote extensively, especially in the area of sermons; therefore, he was named a Doctor of the church. People invoke his name when trying to find lost items. This is due to an event when a novice took his Psalter (book of Psalms), eventually returning it because of a distressing apparition. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 228) THE FAMILY: THE SANCTUARY OF LIFE The family is the Sanctuary of Life and the basic and vital cell of society. The Holy Family, of course, is unique. One member is God, another is sinless, and the third is a saint. But the great lesson of today is that although God could have come into the world in any way he pleased, he chose to become a member of a family, obedient to his earthly parents, and yet totally devoted to the Heavenly Father s will, as we all must be. He also shared the vulnerability that comes with being a member of a human family. Herod is going to search for the child in order to destroy him. St. Joseph here plays the unbelievable role of protecting God. His readiness to do so speaks to every father about the role of protector, and to our whole society about the need we have for good and faithful fathers. The culture of life depends just as much on fathers making the right choices as on mothers doing so. Strong families are an integral aspect of the Culture of Life. It is precisely the breakdown of family structure that increases the temptation to abort, or to resort to euthanasia or a lack of proper care for the elderly.

4 Page 4 June 12, 2016 stewardship ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL GOAL: $59,009 PLEDGES RECEIVED: $65,929 POTENTIAL REBATE: $6,900 We have reached our archdiocesan goal; now let s hit our rebate goal! Every dollar now pledged will come straight to the parish to pay for the installation of our security system. Please fill out a pledge envelope or donate online at Every gift makes a difference, thank you for your generosity! SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION BEGINS JUNE 17 TH The school water system will be replaced along with complete refurbishment of the restrooms. The work will require that the water be turned off for most of the summer and of course the restrooms will be closed down so we will have limited use of the school during this construction. STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Like Nathan in today s first reading, we sin when we begin to feel entitled and act as if what we have is ours by right, when we forget that everything we have is and unmerited gift from God. But God is gracious and forgiving even when we use His gifts wrongly or squander them thoughtlessly if, like Nathan, we confess our guilt and ask His pardon. HOSPITALITY HOUR 8:00 AM Len and Judy Andrews 10:00 AM The Unabia Family This Sunday is our last coffee hour until the first Sunday after Wurstfest in September. Any help during the week would be greatly appreciated. Please contact the Parish Office at or Anita at a.hardwick@stbens.net. We are getting some work done on the house that the church owns to get it ready for new tenants and need to remove all furnishings. Pastoral Council THE FEAST OF ST. BENEDICT AND THE PARISH PICNIC The Church celebrates the Feast of St. Benedict this year on July 11 th. Our community will honor our patron, our community and our faith by celebrating on Sunday July 10 th with a Parish Picnic from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Our picnic is a potluck with side dishes provided by parishioners and all of the rest provided by the parish (hamburgers, hotdogs, buns, condiments, drinks and paper goods). So plan your dish (that can feed at least 20) and save the date. We will enjoy a day in the sun, laughter, the love of our community and welcome our new Pastoral Coordinator Marti Lundberg. Human concerns social justice ST. MARTIN de PORRES SEEKING FUNDS Our ministry group meets at 9:00 AM the 1 st and 3 rd Monday each month to make sandwiches for 225 homeless men. We are low on funds and are seeking both monetary funds and volunteers to maintain this ministry. If each parish family donated $5.00 per month to this ministry, we will continue to be able to make a difference. If you are looking for a summer project for your children to help out, we accept donations of boiled eggs and cookies. We are also looking for sandwich makers as we lose our school volunteers for the summer months. Thank you to the 4th graders that sustain this ministry during the school year. FIGHTING HUNGER IN WALLINGFORD 2016 We have delivered another 255 pounds of food taking our total to 3,593 pounds so far this year for the FamilyWorks Food Bank. Our goal is 10,000 pounds for 2016 and your support is crucial. The QFC on 45 th continues to accept donations that you can order and pay for when you shop, which they deliver directly to FamilyWorks and report back to the parish. Thank you for your support. 10,000 8,000lb 6,000lb 4,000

Contact Lucy Gillett at l.gillett@stbens.net with any questions. What else is happening SERVICE HOURS OPPORTUNITY In order that we keep the altar servers albs (vestment) in pristine condition, it is necessary that they be washed every 2-3 months and especially before major liturgical celebrations. Our Worship and Spiritual Life Committee is gathering a list of volunteers willing to undertake this task so that we can set up a regular schedule. This would not be a major time commitment as there are two washers in the Parish Center where the albs can be laundered. There are 15 albs in all hung up to air dry once out of the washers. The more people we have the less time commitment necessary. Please consider this opportunity, as clean albs are vital to our liturgical celebrations and we have many different servers that wear the same albs on a weekly basis. Please leave your contact information at the parish center or put a note in the collection basket and someone will contact you. Please consider this task as your personal ministry only 4 times a year. A PILGRIMAGE OF THE HEART Take the time this summer to rest, renew your soul, and soak in silence on the shores of Puget Sound. Prayer is not a magic wand! continued the Pope It helps to preserve our faith in God, and to trust in Him even when we do not comprehend His will. In this, Jesus himself - who prayed so much! is the example. ~ Pope Francis, regarding the Gospel of Luke Parabel of the unjust judge.
