3 Page 2 November 22, 2015 From deacon Roy s desk Sisters and brothers in Christ: It s a windy, wet, stormy November Tuesday as I write this and I m most thankful for a warm, dry, bright office in which to work. When the power goes out in a storm, it s those simple, every day things that we really miss, isn t it? Perhaps we should be more thankful for all that we have, especially the small things that are so easily taken for granted until we don t have them! In the optional Gospel for Thanksgiving Day (Luke 17:11-19), Jesus heals ten lepers but only one of them, a Samaritan man, returns to thank him for this amazing gift. And in his thankfulness, the man is not only healed but his faith saves him and leads him to eternal life. We too have much to be thankful for and yet I think that most of the time we take all God s gifts for granted. We are like the other nine lepers who forgot about Jesus and the need to thank him when they discovered they had been healed. So what are you thankful for this Thanksgiving week? Please take the time to ponder this and share your thankfulness with family and friends when you gather on Thursday around a big table filled with food, friends, and festivities. We all have been most blessed in the United States and in our own local community here in Seattle. We have peace, prosperity, opportunity, and so many more things. For Thanksgiving 2015 let us each praise and thank the Lord for all that he has done for us and continues to do in our lives. I won t be with you on Thanksgiving Day this year but you all will be in my prayers. Have a most blessed Thanksgiving week. God bless America and your family. TRANSISTION OF A CHRISTIAN LIFE A Catholic funeral liturgy planning workshop, sponsored by Associated Catholic Cemeteries and the Archdiocese of Seattle, will be facilitated by Greg Simard at St. Benedict Church after evening Mass (6:30 PM) on Wednesday, December 16 th. Please come to find out everything you always want to know but are afraid to ask about the church s teaching, liturgy, cemetery tradition, cremation and burial options. WE MOURN THE PASSING OF CONCHITA BATAYOLA Conchita had been a member of our church since 1960 and brought her family up in our church. Her family is planning to honor her life on Friday December 4th at 7:00 PM with a Rosary and her Funeral Mass the next day at Noon. Both will be here in the church. There will be a reception in the school cafeteria after Mass on Saturday. ST. ANDREW Dung-Lac ( ) As a Vietnamese priest, St. Andrew is one of the hundred seventeen martyrs canonized in 1988 who died trying to establish and spread the Catholic faith in Vietnam. This effort, which began in 1533 and continued well into the nineteenth century, was fraught with periods of persecution. Although Andrew was born into a Buddhist family, he was raised Catholic, His priestly ministry involved evangelization, parish catechesis, and service to the persecuted. Living under a particularly oppressive edict, St. Andrew was killed because he would not renounce his Christian apostolate and succumb to idolatrous ritual. (2015 Sourcebook pg. 324) ST. CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA (fourth century) Catherine lived in Alexandria, Egypt, during the reign of the Roman emperor Maxentius. Legend says that Catherine bravely confronted the emperor about his pagan beliefs. Maxentius gathered fifty pagan philosophers and challenged her to a debate. Her arguments were so convincing that many of the philosophers converted to Christianity. He then threatened to kill her unless she married him and renounced her faith. She refused and was condemned to death on a spiked wheel, but the wheel fell apart when she touched it. She was then beheaded and legend says that angels carried her to Mount Sinai. To date we have received pledges of 249,637 or 65% of our $385,000 goal. 130 families made these pledges. If you have not made your pledge for 2016, please carefully consider how you can give back a portion of what God has given you. Return your pledge card at Mass on Sunday or make your pledge online at RAISING THE ROOF! - BUY A SHINGLE! Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the roof replacement fund! To date we have received donations of $5,579, which means we are $2,503 short of replenishing the $8,082 used from general parish savings to pay for the roofs. SCHOOL NEWS HAPPY THANKSGIVING AND THANK YOU The school students, teachers and staff of St. Benedict School would like to take a moment to give thanks to our wonderful Parish Community. St. Benedict School Community Human concerns social justice ST. BENEDICT GIVING TREE Our parish is well known for our generosity over the years when it comes to the Giving Tree. Once again we try to fulfill wishes for people in these groups: St. Martin de Porres: a safe shelter for homeless men over 50, Mary's Place: a welcoming and accepting environment for women with children, King County Juvenile Detention Center: youth waiting for court or for sentencing, Columbia Lutheran Home: caring for the whole person by skilled nursing for long term nursing care, St. Francis House: helping men, women and children in need St. Vincent de Paul: striving to provide assistance to the poor, Friends of Limulunga: part of the St. Benedict parish family that assists and St. Lawrence of Brindisi with scholarships for high school, college or trade school. Taking a tag off of the Tree, is a promise to provide the gift listed on the tag or scholarship monies and to place that unwrapped gift, with the tag securely taped or stapled to it, under the Giving Tree no later than 5:00 PM on December 13 th. Thank you in advance for blessing a special person in need this Christmas which may be the only gift that they receive! MARTIN de PORRES Our Parish supports St. Martin de Porres Men s Shelter by making and providing sandwiches for 212 homeless every 1 st and 3 rd Monday of the month. Volunteer to make sandwiches on these Monday s from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM and if you can t, we accept donations of hard boiled eggs and home baked goodies to go along with our sandwiches. Working together can and does make a difference. Thank you for your monthly donations and your help. Also, thank you for support of the Giving Tree. FIGHTING HUNGER IN WALLINGFORD Last week, QFC delivered another 204 pounds of food to the food bank from Parish donations bringing our total to 7,678 pounds of food!! Please continue to bring your donations or give the next time you go shopping at the Wallingford QFC. Thank you for your generosity and support of this food drive for our community, we are 2,524 pounds away from our goal of 10,000 pounds for Great work everyone! 10,000 8,000 6,000 4,000 PEACEFUL CRAFTERS We meet Thursday morning at 9:30 AM in the Parish Center and would love all of you to join our Ministry. We are concentrating on our Boxes of Joy and can use individual Kleenex packs, individually wrapped coffee or tea and all your left over Halloween candy. Join us or drop the items off in the vestibule or the Parish Office and we will combine them with our handmade items for the area women s shelters at Christmas. THANKSGIVING DINNERS There are two ways you can help with this year s Thanksgiving drive: Donate money by check to St. Benedict Thanksgiving Dinner Food Drive, or help by delivering Thanksgiving dinner to local families. HCSJ in partnership with SVdP will purchase and deliver 10 pre-cooked family dinners to our Wallingford area neighbors in need, and 36 individual dinners to the residents of Patrick House.
