C O M January 21, 2018 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time p2 GOSPEL MEDITATION - FINDING DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him. What did Zebedee think about all of this? His sons and his partners, James and John, suddenly left their post and followed Jesus. So there he stood in the boat with a crew of employees, but not one of his sons. We can t help but wonder whether Zebedee was in favor of this promise that his heirs would become fishers of men. Most likely, this event was the cause of some family tension. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus instructs us to love and serve others for the love of God. But the Lord also makes it clear that our devotion to him is meant to trump our devotion to anything -to anyone -else. For our part, we are called to allow this divine allegiance to exist in those we love even when means a sacrifice for us as well. Parents for example, like Zebedee are called to encourage their children to follow the Lord s call. As son or daughter s vocation to religious life certainly exemplifies this kind of sacrifice for a parent who might have had a different plan in mind. But in truth every son and daughter has a vocation from God and parents have the opportunity to support and assist their children as they seek to hear and follow God s special plan for their lives. We don t know for sure how Zebedee responded to the vocation of his sons, but we know that James and John were counted among the Twelve Apostles and that their devotion and dedication helped to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Regardless of what he might have thought as he stood in that boat, we can be quite sure that looking back now, Zebedee can rejoice heartily in the choice of his sons to leave their nets and follow Christ. LIVE THE LITURGY Jesus proclaims today the Gospel of God: This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and Believe in the Gospel. Jesus challenges us to accept a change of heart, to start believing and thinking differently. The Gospel asks us to take the focus off ourselves and away from self-concern, and place it on our brothers and sisters, Especially those most broken and in need, and on our environment. We are called to be stewards of all God has Created. This means that we are also called to work on God s behalf ensuring that all that God created and all who God Created is cared for and protected. 5 Discipleship Pg.5 Our Season of Stewardship of Prayer This is another form of Stewardship, and as such, it is built on the same tenets of spirituality; Identity, Trust, Gratitude and Love (see Discipleship on our web site for a refresher) Similarly to giving, as good and faithful stewards, we need to return (our time), with increase, to our God. We can do this through prayer and adoration. I ve heard it said that St Pope John Paul II was once asked what the best form of prayer was. He replied; The one you say. Whether or not it was St JP II that answered this way, I think there s real wisdom in the answer. Other than the Mass, we all need to find the form of prayer that speaks to us. The words and the form really aren t what s important. What s important is that our time in prayer, whatever form, leads us closer to our loving Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We ll be shining a light on three very Catholic forms of Prayer; the Rosary, Novena s and Eucharistic Adoration. They are wonderful forms practiced and promoted by many, and probably most, of our great Saints and Popes. As we leave the Christmas season and enter ordinary time all shiny and new, I challenge you to commit to improve your prayer life. Try a new form of prayer, set a schedule to prioritize prayer in your daily routine or both. Your efforts will not go unnoticed. And I say the same to you; ask, and the gift will come, seek, and you shall find; knock, and the door shall be opened to you. I was in the 1st group to go through the Choice Wine retreat, but wasn t sure what to expect from the small group formed after. It s not what I expected, yet somehow, exactly what I wanted/needed. Our group has met for several months now, it s been really fascinating to hear what other people can pull out of the exact same gospel sentence we re always amazed. Our discussions only make the gospel passages be all the more robust, and I find myself looking forward to what Father might pull out of it himself the following week. Another amazing side benefit is the closer bond formed with my immediate neighbors. It is so nice to be able to wave to someone, and actually know more about them than I do my other neighbors it just feels more like family. However, sometimes it leads me to a place that does not exist. Then there are those times when I am about to turn and the man inside my phone shouts out, GPS signal Lost or Rerouting! The problem is when the area is unfamiliar to me, I have no choice but to listen. I could try to get where I am going by simple intuition or pulling over to look at a paper map, but I don t trust my sense of direction and have not brought a paper map in close to decade. Many people move through life without any direction. They find themselves constantly rerouting and wondering when they will ever get to a satisfying final destination. What they need is a compass and a companion for the journey, yet they have no idea how to get either. Prayer can serve as a compass and it connects to a companion for the journey. Stewardship living is impossible without prayer. If we count on our own will and believe we can become fruitful without daily contact with the divine, we can find ourselves looking for directions more than moving toward a destination. God through prayer will help us see all we have as gift. God through prayer will lead us away from materialism and selfishness toward freedom and generosity. Even when we fall to sin, the path back is clearer. God s GPS signal is never really lost. Mortgage Retirement Contributions: January 13th & 14th: $7, ( includes online giving of $2, ) WHY DO WE DO THAT? QUESTION: In Year B, we hear primarily from the Gospel of Mark. Since each Evangelist has a unique perspective, what are the key issues that Mark addresses in His Gospel? ANSWER: Mark s Gospel seems to be addressed to a faith community undergoing turmoil, rejection and persecution forces that threaten to overwhelm them. This provides the context around which Mark fashions the story of Jesus. He presents Jesus as the One sent by God to confront the forces of evil. That is the good news of Jesus. Jesus struggle with the demonic forces leads to confrontation, rejection, outright opposition, and a Conspiracy to do away with him. Realizing this, Jesus is not deterred. Rather Jesus for total faith in God who helps us to overcome the forces of evil. Suffering and even death seem to be the consequences of this struggle. Yet, that is not the end. The one who suffers for the sake of others, the suffering servant, will be the one through whom redemption and salvation will come To all. For Mark, this is what discipleship demands and what true faith in God can and will accomplish.
