3 Page 3 April 24, 2016 From deacon Roy s desk Dear Sisters and Brothers: If you were at Mass last weekend, you heard the details of our break-in and burglary early on Monday morning, April 11 th. While a lot of damage was done, it s now mostly repaired and the insurance will pay for the repair costs. And thankfully, the two young men, both in their 20 s, who were arrested on April 14 th, have confessed to all ten of the church burglaries that have occurred since Christmas. Now we can begin to relax a bit more but we will still be taking significant steps in the coming weeks to improve security systems, reinforce doors, change keys, increase lighting around the campus, and reinforce security awareness for everyone. While we are taking the time to fix and improve our security systems, there is a more personal, spiritual component to this traumatic experience which we all have suffered. For those of us whose offices were broken into and personal things gone through, it feels like we have been personally violated. For all of us who worship in the Church, it can also feel like our sacred space has been desecrated in a way, though they did not intentionally desecrate any of the holy artifacts or the altar and tabernacle. For that I am very grateful. But still we are called to forgive these two men who attempted to steal from us and to pray for their reconciliation and conversion. We don t yet know their stories or why they felt compelled to burglarize so many Catholic churches but that doesn t really matter, does it? They have intentionally harmed us and now Christ s message of forgiveness and mercy compels us to forgive. Just as Christ forgave the repentant good thief on the Cross, let us live out compassionate forgiveness for all those who have harmed us. Many continued Easter blessings and may your family have a peace-filled week. Your brother in Christ, Deacon Roy Worship & spiritual life ALL-PARISH PASTORAL PLANNING GATHERING WEDNESDAY AT 7:00PM, IN THE CHURCH The North Seattle Deanery Planning Process will continue with a meeting Wednesday night after Mass in the Church. Information regarding the February 29 th meeting is posted on the St. Benedict website There were representatives from our parish and school at this deanery meeting and they were presented with the posted goals and demographic information. Please join us for an all-parish gathering about the planning process. We will discuss the same materials and have an opportunity for discussion with specific consideration to possibilities for our parish community. Please preview the demographic information and join us as we plan for the future of St. Benedict Parish. Please RSVP online or by calling the Parish Office at ST. BENEDICT PARISH PILGRAMAGE TO WALK THROUGH THE DOORS OF MERCY All are welcome for the St. Benedict Parish pilgrimage to St. James Cathedral on Pentecost Sunday, May 15 th from 3:00 to 4:30 PM. We will begin with a brief prayer before and after walking through the doors. A short tour (about minutes) of the Cathedral will be provided. You will have time to spend a few minutes in prayer and are encouraged to join in Vespers that begin at 4:00 PM. The entire visit will take about 90 minutes meeting at the church to travel in to the Cathedral. Pope Frances has offered plenary indulgence for those that walk through the Doors of Mercy in this year of Mercy. Join us! THE SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY To instruct the ignorant; To counsel the doubtful; To admonish sinners; To bear wrongs patiently; To forgive offences willingly; To comfort the afflicted; To pray for the living and the dead. ST. MARK Known as the traditional author of the Gospel account that bears his name, Mark has been identified with John Mark and Mark, the cousin of Barnabas, the earliest tradition sees him as a distinct individual, one of the seventy disciples sent by Jesus to preach before the Crucifixion. According to Hippolytus, a writer of the second to third century, he had such difficulty with Jesus teaching on the Eucharist that he left but was later brought back by St. Peter. Subsequently, he traveled with Peter and worked as his interpreter, wrote the Gospel based on Peter s preaching, and became bishop of Alexandria in Egypt. The Coptic Church claims Mark as their first bishop and parts of their liturgy are attributed to him. Their tradition says that he was martyred at Alexandria in 68 A.D. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 181) ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA Catherine lived at a time when the divisions and corruption in the Church went so deep that many wondered if the papacy would survive. The popes no longer lived in Rome; instead, they dwelt amid kingly pomp and splendor at their palace in Avignon in southern France. When Catherine was born, the Popes had not been in Rome for more than forty years. Catherine grew up in a large and prosperous family as a child on fire with love for God. A practical woman, who possessed heavenly wisdom, great charm and sensible advice, Catherine became an ambassador for the church, traveling, speaking and writing on behalf of Church unity. She so impressed Gregory IX that at her urging he returned to Rome. Having offered her life for the unity of the Church, she died in Rome at the age of thirty-three. Without any formal education this young woman has since become a Doctor of the Church. (2016 Sourcebook pgs ) THE CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY Feed the hungry; Give Drink to the Thirsty; Clothe the Naked; Visit the Imprisoned Shelter the Homeless; Visit the Sick; Bury the Dead

Human concerns social justice Our Human Concerns and Social Justice Commission has delivered another 181 pounds of food taking our total to 2,782 pounds so far this year for the FamilyWorks Food Bank. Just a reminder that our goal of 10,000 pounds in 2016 is only attainable through you. We need to collect 834 pounds of food each month to achieve that goal so we are approximately 550 pounds behind what where we should be at the end of April. Thank you to the school for their diligence in their food drives as well as the parishioners that bring their food and cash donations each Sunday. As a reminder, QFC on 45th continues to accept donations that you can order and pay for when you shop which they deliver directly and report back to the parish.
