You may have noticed that we have a growing number of young families with children in our parish.

6 I have a few parish housekeeping issues I would like to share with you. First, we have purchased several books entitled Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families which are located at the doors to the Cathedral. You may have noticed that we have a growing number of young families with children in our parish. I thought this book might be of some help to parents as they strive to integrate our Catholic faith into the lives of their children. Please take a copy for your family and use it as you see fit. The first reflection in the book can be used on September 6 th, which is the Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. Second, I want to thank all those members of the parish who gave of their time and talent in support of our Meal For Those In Need, which was held on our campus this past Tuesday. In addition to providing a grilled burger luncheon with all the trimmings and side salads, we also had representatives from Catholic Charities and the Washington State Department of Health Services to help connect people with the assistance they need. Free haircuts were provided as well as veterinarian care by one of our own parishioners. It was quite a day and I am particularly grateful to Colin Harris, Terry Gaffney and the Knights of Columbus, and Darlene Gaffney and the Altar Society for their organizational efforts. These events are funded through your donations to the second collection at Sunday Mass thank you for your good stewardship of treasure. Finally, if you are a parent of a child who will be preparing for First Confession, Confirmation and Holy Communion, please call the office to register ( ) or fill out the online form on the Cathedral website (SpokaneCathedral.com). I have met with the catechetical team to review materials and have asked that they include the Baltimore Catechism First Holy Communion book in the curriculum. Their goal was to care for the sick and dying poor of Calcutta. Mother Teresa won the Nobel Peace Prize. She once said, Kind words are short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.

To aid parents in preparing for this event, we will be beginning our sacramental preparation classes Sunday, September 20 th. Wildfire Update From Catholic Charities The 2015 wildfire season continues to devastate unprecedented numbers of acres all across Washington State. Last week, Rob McCann and a Catholic Charities team went to Twisp, Brewster and Omak. They brought with them a convoy of trucks with blankets, towels, food and water as well as prepaid Visa gift cards for families to get diapers, medications and gas for travel. Bishop Daly also personally visited the parishes under the care of Fr. Jeff Lewis in Chewelah. The need will remain great in these communities for weeks and months to come even after the fires are out. Financial donations to the Catholic Charities Spokane Wildfire Relief fund will allow them to serve people in crisis right now and in the months to come. 10 On Tuesday, August 25 th, the Cathedral hosted our annual Summer BBQ for those in need. These photos speak for themselves on what a success it was! Thank you to all who helped! 10 First Friday This coming Friday, September 4 th, is First Friday and a day to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In an appearance to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, Our Lord promised that whoever receives Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays will receive specific blessings. Among these blessings are the gift of final perseverance and the promise to receive the last Sacraments before death. Plan on joining your fellow parishioners this Friday at Noon Mass.
