6 If someone were to catalog the churches in Eastern Washington noted for their beautiful architecture and historic character, that list would no doubt include the Church of St. Boniface in Uniontown, the Sacred Heart Chapel in the Sacred Heart Doctor s Building, St. Aloysius Church in Spokane and, certainly, our own Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. These buildings are an inspiration. Through noble materials, sacred art, and timeless construction, hearts and minds are lifted to God. Our Lady of Lourdes has the added distinction of housing the chair for the bishop of our diocese. The presence of his carved wood cathedra on the marble platform in our sanctuary reminds us of the special role we have as the Mother Church of the Diocese of Spokane. The reality is, however, that with additional dignity comes additional responsibility. As the principal Church in eastern Washington we have the obligation to provide a model of liturgical life, care for the poor, and support for the work of the Church to other parishes in the diocese. In my opinion, we do all three of these pretty well. It is at this time each year when we have the opportunity to take the lead in supporting the ministry of our bishop. Through our strong support of the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal, we provide a model for other Catholics to follow. Sacrificial pledges to the ACA provide necessary funding for priestly formation, care of retired priests, university and prison ministry as well as much more. Next week is commitment Sunday for the ACA. I would ask that you read through the materials you will receive in the mail this week and prayerfully consider your pledge. Completed envelopes may be returned next week and placed in the basket along with the regular collection. I myself have already made a $1, pledge to the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal which I will pay over the course of the next 12 months. I realize that for some parishioners, $84 per month is impossible while others are able to do much more. I simply trust that each of you will prayerfully consider your response with the knowledge that each and every pledge, of any amount, is greatly appreciated. Religious Education 8 Altar Society Annual St. Valentine's Day Book & Bake Sale The Altar Society will be holding it's annual book & bake sale on February 13 th & 14 th, after the 4:00 pm, 9:00 am, and 11:00 am Masses. A special Valentine gift basket will be raffled on Sunday after Mass! With the growing number of young families and children in our parish, a Search Committee has been formed to recommend a candidate to serve as Coordinator of Religious Education. The CRE job description and application instructions can be found on the Cathedral website: SpokaneCathedral.com. The following parishioners are members of the CRE Search Committee: Laurie Walters (Chairperson), Jami Cary, Cheri Mallahan, Shane O Doherty, and Dr. Mark Selle. If you know these committee members, then you also know that they bring with them a significant amount of experience in parenting, elementary school education, and human resource management. The CRE Search Committee will be receiving and reviewing applications until February 15 th. Following the deadline, qualified candidates will be interviewed and then a recommendation will be made to Father Connall. Father is committed to accepting the recommendation of the Search Committee and a new CRE should be in place by March. Please pray we find the right candidate for our children and young people. Cathedral Campaign Update The Ribble Center has been finished, the Cathedral Rectory has been renovated, and now it is time for the third phase of our Cathedral Campaign for a Second Century. This third and final phase of the campaign involves the removal of the cloud over the altar. A total of $1,205, was pledged to the Cathedral Campaign. After the completion of phase one and two, we now have $9, in the bank and $114, remaining in outstanding pledges. All pledges need to be fulfilled in order to give us the necessary cash flow to remove the cloud. The removal of the cloud involves sound and lighting issues which means we need to move ahead carefully and deliberately with the help of experts and engineers. In May of 2016, the plan is to give new parishioners the opportunity to make a contribution to this project. Any additional funds will be used exclusively for the improvement and beautification of the sanctuary. Please continue to watch the bulletin for further updates.

The Diocese of Spokane has made a decision for the calendar for the 2016/17 school year. The first day of school is August 30 th, Diocesan Pilgrimage Bishop Daly and Father Connall will be leading a pilgrimage to the shrines of France from October 2 nd to October 13 th, The highlight of the trip will be a two-day visit to the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. The pilgrimage is open to Catholics throughout eastern Washington and will no doubt fill up fast. These Sunday Stewards of Time and Talent give back to the Lord as altar servers, readers, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, ushers, coffee and donuts hosts, Knights of Columbus brothers providing breakfast, catechists teaching our children, and members of the Altar Society cooking their famous French toast breakfast. Wow! Imagine how lost our parish would be on a Sunday without these good stewards of time and talent. Thank you very much!
