2 O R D E R O F C E L E B R A T I O N f o r The Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Within your will, O Lord, all things are established, and there is none that can resist your will. For you have made all things, the heaven and the earth, and all that is held within the circle of heaven; you are the Lord of all. T H E I N T R O D U C T O R Y R I T E S ENTRANCE HYMN For the Beauty of the Earth DIX PENITENTIAL ACT I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (and striking their breast, they say) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4 RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 95 Alstott SECOND READING 2 Timothy 1:6-8, ALLELUIA Mode VI GOSPEL Luke 17:5-10 HOMILY CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, 2 begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (all bow through and became man ) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

4 For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 6 COMMUNION HYMN God with Hidden Majesty SECOND COLLECTION & HYMN Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee 5

7 Twelve months ago, I thought I would be spending today packing and preparing to go on pilgrimage with Bishop Daly as he leads a group from our diocese to Our Lady s shrine in Lourdes, France. However, I realized some time ago that my health is just not good enough to make the long journey to Europe. My surgeon tells me that it will take up to 12 months to fully heal and reach my new normal. I am pleased that I continue to make steady progress - just not enough for a long pilgrimage. Therefore, as you read my column today I will be at the Jesuit Retreat Center in Los Altos, California. My intention is to thank Our Lady of Lourdes, Pope Saint John Paul II, and Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal for their prayers this past year. I continue to receive regular CT scans which indicate that I am cancer free. I therefore need to take some time to thank God for this blessing through the intercession of the Saints. While on retreat, I am reading books on healing and growth in holiness by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Henri Nouwen, and C.S. Lewis. I am also reflecting on the Examen as given to us by St. Ignatius of Loyola. I hope to gain some insights into the spiritual life and to deepen my relationship with the Lord. I want you to know that today (Sunday) I will be remembering all of you at Mass. I pray for everyone in our Cathedral Family and ask for God s special blessings on those among us who are most in need of his healing and grace at this particular time. My plan is to preach all the Masses next weekend. Until then, let us continue to keep one another in prayer. Sincerely in Christ, Father Darrin Connall Rector 6

9 Community Outreach The Parish Social Concerns Committee has been re-formed and is now the Community Outreach Committee. In addition to the Manger Project, this committee is expanding to meet the needs of other areas in the community. Some of the needs include; participating in the Diocesan Night Walk Program, preparing care packages of basic personal needs, soap, toothpaste, etc., for those who are returning to society, and visiting nursing home residents who would otherwise have no one to spend time with them. As the committee grows the work it does will adjust to meet the needs of our community. If anyone is interested in joining this committee, please contact Father Seidel, Deacon John, or call the parish office for further information. First Friday Pinochle has moved days! 10 CATHEDRAL CAMPAIGN FOR A SECOND CENTURY UPDATE Last Sunday we held our kick off reception for Part II of our Cathedral Campaign for a Second Century. During this reception many parishioners had the opportunity to hear about the upcoming renovation of our Cathedral Sanctuary and to have their questions answered. If you were not able to attend this reception, please mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 18 th at 5:30 p.m. for a follow-up reception. All households are being asked to consider a three year pledge of $4,000 to this campaign. For some in our parish this will be too much of a financial burden. Others, however, will be in a position to do much more. We are not asking everyone for the same gift, just an equal sacrifice. Please take some time to prayerfully consider your pledge, fill out a pledge card, and return it through the mail or along with the regular Sunday collection. After just one week into the campaign, we have already received $53, in gifts and pledges. This is a great start! Additional campaign brochures can be found at the doors to the Cathedral. Moreover, extra envelopes and pledge cards have been placed in the pews for your convenience. We are asking everyone to return a card by Sunday, October 23 rd so that we can map out a renovation schedule based on pledges to be redeemed. Thank you for your support! This program may be of interest to the unbaptized, or to the baptized non-catholic Christians who wish to become fully initiated into the Catholic Church. 11 Scriptural Reflection October 2, 2016 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time HAB 1:2-3: 2: 2-4; PS 95: 1-2, 6-9; 2 TM 1: 6-8, 13-14; LK 17: 5-10 Our First Reading from the Old Testament Book of Habbakuk is once again from someone we consider to be a minor prophet. However, Habbakuk, like other divinely-inspired writers of the Bible, captures the essence of messages and prophecies that have universal applicability not only in his time, but to us today. Habbakuk was writing more than 600 years before the birth of Christ that is more than 2,600 years before now. Yet he addresses a stewardship approach to life in ways that are significant to us today. Scholars generally agree that the overall theme of Habbakuk is trying to grow from a faith that might be termed perplexing and sometimes doubtful to a point where we place absolute trust in God. In today s reading, Habbakuk deals with the situation of when someone believes in God, but when they look at the world around them, it does not seem to match what God wants. Isn t that true of today s world as we are inundated with tragic and horrible news almost on a daily basis? Trust in God is the key for us to be good stewards, and it is at the crux of the power of faith. In his Memoirs Pope Benedict XVI said, The more I reflect on it, the more I understand that the nature of human life is that it is ever Holy Saturday, not Easter Sunday. We are still awaiting Easter; we are not standing in full light, but walking toward it full of trust. That trust is the secret! Stewardship Report for the month of September IHRC Weekend Retreat on the Year of Mercy for Men and Women Living Mercy: Jubilee Year of Mercy in Action October 28, 2016, 6:00 PM - October 30, 2016, 1:00 PM Msgr.
