1 O R D E R O F C E L E B R A T I O N f o r The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Lord is the strength of his people, a saving refuge for the one he has anointed. Save your people, Lord, and bless your heritage, and govern them for ever. (Psalm 98) ENTRANCE HYMN T H E I N T R O D U C T O R Y R I T E S Praise to the Lord LOBE DEN HERREN PENITENTIAL ACT I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (and striking their breast, they say) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING Zechariah 12:10-11; 13:1 RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 63 Alstott SECOND READING Galatians 3:26-29 ALLELUIA Mode VI GOSPEL Luke 9:18-24 HOMILY CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
3 (all bow through and became man ) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 6 Last week I wrote about the use of consecration bells at Mass. Today I would like to mention another bell we use here at the Cathedral which is the large brass bell located in the east spire of our massive brick towers. Like the consecration bells at Mass, the bell in our tower is rung to enhance our worship of God. Each day the bell is rung at Noon and 6:00 p.m. in the form of a peal which is an extended and joyous ring. The purpose of ringing the bell at these two times of the day is to call people to pray a traditional prayer called the Angelus which is a combination of biblical passages and the Hail Mary. The Angelus is printed in today s bulletin and I encourage you to consider saying this prayer at Noon and 6:00 p.m. each day especially if you are reminded by the pealing of our bell. The tower bell is also rung each night at 9:00 p.m. However, unlike the joyous peal of the bell heard earlier in the day, this time it is the funeral toll which is heard. This is a mournful ringing which consists of nine single strikes separated by several seconds of silence. As the darkness of night surrounds us, the purpose of this toll is to remind us to pray for our loved ones and friends who have died. Finally, the other times when the bell is rung is before and after Mass. Before Mass the bell is rung to serve as a call to worship. As parishioners are walking out of the Cathedral following Mass, the peal of the bell serves as a joyous sending forth of our community freshly nourished with the Word of God and the Holy Eucharist. As I mentioned last week, God made human beings with five senses and thus sounds are an important part of our liturgical life as Catholics. The beauty of ringing bells calls our attention to the worship of God. We are blessed to have a beautiful bell in our tower, in the heart of Downtown Spokane, which invites people to prayer and a deeper relationship with the Lord. Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Darrin Connall Rector 6

9 The Angelus Prayer Vigil The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary: And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it done unto me according to Thy word. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. And the Word was made Flesh: And dwelt among us. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen. 9 Monday June 20 th at 5:30 PM the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes will host an ecumenical prayer vigil for the victims of the Orlando shooting, for their families, loved ones, and for all those affected by the violence. Being the members of the Mother Church of Eastern Washington, we at the Cathedral are uniquely obliged to take a leadership role in offering such prayers when faced with trial and tragedy. I ask the parishioners of the Cathedral to make a special effort attend this vigil. If you are unable to be there, I ask that you pray a decade of the rosary for the repose of those souls who have lost their lives in the Orlando Shooting concluding with: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. ~ Father Seidel Due to the generosity of the parishioners and guests that attended last weekend's Knights of Columbus 2 nd Sunday Breakfast, we raised $ for the victims of the fires in the Provinces of Alberta, Canada. The Government of Alberta will match our donation for a total of $1, USD or $1, CAD. Thank you for you generosity! 10 Scriptural Reflection June 19, 2016 Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Zec 12: 10-11; 13: 1; Ps 63: 2-6, 8-9; Gal 3: 26-29; Lk 9: Our Gospel Reading for today finishes with the Lord telling us, For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. That may sound somewhat foreboding to us as we strive to follow Him and to be His disciple. We need to see that from another perspective, however. Jesus was fond of teaching by using references to plants and planting. On multiple occasions he cites seeds in His teachings. If we consider it, we bury a seed; in effect it dies. Nevertheless, it must die for it to fulfill what it was intended to be. It cannot produce fruit, become a tree unless it goes through the process of dying to what it once was. That is Jesus message for us. If we truly wish to follow Him, we must die to what we once may have been, or in some cases to what we may think we want to be. We have to learn to look at ourselves as the Lord might look at us. The ongoing question is What does the Lord want me to be? or How does the Lord want me to serve Him and others? It is not easy to serve the Lord. It is not comfortable to always think of others first. Yet, those are Jesus instructions to us. That is His call to us. As He reminded us many times, I came to serve, not to be served. That needs to be our goal as well. That is what stewardship is all about. Holy - In - One Golf Tournament 3225 N. Columbia Cir.
