THE LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING Wisdom 18:6-9 RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 33 Alstott SECOND READING Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19 ALLELUIA Mode VI GOSPEL Luke 12:32-48 HOMILY CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
4 (all bow through and became man ) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 7 This coming Wednesday, August 10 th, the Church throughout the world celebrates the Feast of Saint Lawrence. Saint Lawrence was one of seven deacons who served under Pope Sixtus II. In the year 258 AD a bloody persecution of Christians took place and the Holy Father was executed by order of the Roman Emperor Valerian. It turns out that the Prefect of Rome thought the deacons for the pope were wealthy and so Deacon Lawrence was ordered to bring the Church's treasure to the Prefect. The Saint said he would. For the next three days, Deacon Lawrence went through the dirty streets of the city and gathered together all the poor, sick and suffering people whom the Church cared for and supported. As Lawrence showed them to the Prefect, he said: "This is the Church's treasure!" The Prefect flew into a rage and condemned Lawrence to a slow, cruel death. Lawrence was tied on top of an iron grill over a slow fire for the purpose of roasting him alive. Tradition has it that Lawrence was so filled with God s love that he did not feel the flames. In fact, God gave him so much strength as his flesh roasted away that he was able to joke to his executioner: Turn me over I'm done on this side!" Just before he died, he prayed that the city of Rome might be converted to Jesus Christ and that the Catholic Faith might spread throughout the world. He died a martyr s death and received a martyr s reward. As we prepare to celebrate the feast of this holy deacon, it is fitting to recognize the two deacons we have serving our Cathedral Family. Deacon Brian Ernst unlocks the church at 5:15 a.m. each weekday throughout the year. He sets up, serves the Mass, preaches on Thursdays, and then cleans up afterward. Deacon John Sicilia dedicates dozens of hours each week leading RCIA classes, baptismal preparation, marriage preparation, preaching, and assisting at the altar during Sunday Masses. As we prepare to celebrate Deacon Lawrence this week, let us remember to be grateful for our own deacons who serve us so faithfully. Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Darrin Connall Rector 6

10 Stewardship for July The concept of stewardship begins with the recognition that everything we have has been given to us by God our life, our time, our talents, and our money. We receive these gifts with gratitude. In turn, we respond to God s goodness by caring for these gifts responsibly and returning a portion of them back to Him. Time and Talent This coming week, the Cathedral will present our annual Vacation Bible School for children. The theme will focus on God s merciful love throughout salvation history. Over 20 adult volunteers have stepped forward to provide supervision, lead games, prepare snacks, and serve as catechists. We could not provide a quality Vacation Bible School without these good stewards of time and talent. Treasure The chart below indicates that we had a strong beginning to the new fiscal year. Your willingness to give back to God a portion of the treasure He has given to you continues to help us maintain the mission and ministry of the Mother Church of the Diocese of Spokane. For example, this past week workers completed a major repair on the broken sewer line leading from the rectory to the main line on Riverside. The anticipated cost for this unexpected repair is $15,000! This kind of costly maintenance item is funded through your sacrificial gifts to the parish. Thank you for your good stewardship of treasure! 11 Scriptural Reflection August 7, 2016 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Wis 18: 6-9; Ps 33: 1, 12, 18-19, 20-22; Heb 11: 1-2, 8-19; Lk 12: At the close of today s Gospel Reading from St. Luke, Jesus makes a statement that will echo forever to those who seek to practice stewardship: Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more. Jesus is speaking of His expectations of us and His faith in us. We often speak about how important faith in the Lord is, but we also need to understand that He has a strong element of faith and trust in us as well. It may not seem fair that expectations are connected to the gifts we have received, but that is in fact reality. A popular stewardship saying is not equal giving but equal sacrifice. That goes hand in hand with what the Lord is trying to teach us in the Parable of the Faithful Servant in today s Gospel. First, of course, we must recognize our gifts and that we are gifted. Then God s expectations of us are tied to how we use our gifts. If we receive more, we need to share more and give more of our time, our talent, and our treasure. Also in the Gospel of Luke in an earlier chapter we learn from the Lord what the rewards are for using God s plentiful gifts as good stewards. Jesus says in Luke 6:38 Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you. RCIA In response to the Church s ongoing mission of evangelization, The Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes will be offering a program of instruction for those interested in the Catholic Faith and in living a full sacramental life within the Church. This program may be of interest to the unbaptized, or to the baptized non-catholic Christians who wish to become fully initiated into the Catholic Church. Classes will begin Saturday, October 1 st at 10:00 am in the Ribble Center. For more information or to register for classes, please contact Deacon John Sicilia at or jsicilia@dioceseofspokane.org. 10
