1 ORDER OF CELEBRATION for The Second Sunday of Lent ENTRANCE ANTIPHON Of you my heart has spoken, Seek his face. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek; hide not your face from me. THE INTRODUCTORY RITES ENTRANCE Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days ST. FLAVIAN GREETING PENITENTIAL ACT I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (and striking their breast, they say) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. KYRIE Cantor, then All: chant, Mass XVI Vatican Edition 1. & 3. Ky - ri - e, e - le - i - son. 2. Chri - ste, e - le - i - son. OPENING PRAYER (The Collect)

2 THE LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING Genesis 15:5-12, RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 27 Alstott SECOND READING Philippians 3:17-4:1 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Schoen GOSPEL Luke 9:28 B-36 HOMILY CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (all bow through and became man ) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

5 COMMUNION (11:00 A.M.) Jesus, Lead Thou On Adam Drese (All Masses) I Heard The Voice Of Jesus KINGSFOLD 1. I heard the voice of Jesus say, Come unto me and rest; Lay down, thou weary one, lay down Thy head upon my breast. I came to Jesus as I was weary and worn and sad; I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad. 2. I heard the voice of Jesus say, Behold, I freely give The living water; thirsty one, Stoop down, and drink, and live. I came to Jesus, and I drank Of that life giving stream; My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him. 3. I heard the voice of Jesus say, I am this dark world s light; Look unto me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright. I looked to Jesus, and I found In him my star, my sun; And in that light of life I ll walk Till traveling days are done. The Cathedral s second collection helps to fund outreach programs to people who are homeless, poor, or unemployed. Your generosity to those in need is greatly appreciated. SECOND COLLECTION & HYMN Forty Days and Forty Nights HEINLEIN THE CONCLUDING RITES BLESSING & DISMISSAL

6 As I write my column this week, I cannot help but reflect on our Lourdes Novena for Healing which we concluded last week. I was so pleased with the quality of our guest preachers, the beauty of our choirs and music, and the enthusiasm of so many of you who participated in these days of healing and hope. The attendance was remarkable and I was truly inspired and grateful. I went to bed on the last day of the Novena and, much to my surprise, ended up sleeping for 30 hours! I had received a heavy dose of chemotherapy earlier in the week which, when combined with the demands of the Novena, caused my body to say enough. I am not accustomed to being that wiped out, but it was all worth it the chemo is helping to save my life and the Novena is helping to save my soul. As we look ahead, we now turn our attention to the hiring of a Coordinator of Religious Education. The Search Committee is meeting to review resumes and will be interviewing candidates very soon. The members of the committee bring a great deal of expertise and experience to the process and I trust their judgment. After their prayerful deliberations, my plan is to accept whomever they recommend as a qualified candidate. We hope to have a Coordinator of Religious Education in place by March 1 st. Finally, another important focus of our attention is the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal. Much to my frustration, the mailing service used by the diocese was late in getting materials and pledge envelopes to parishioners which means that we are off to a slow start. I am confident, however, that we can make up for this error. To that end, please place your completed pledge envelope in the collection TODAY if you forgot you envelope at home, additional ACA envelopes can be found in the pews. Thank you for helping our parish rise to its leadership role as the Mother Church of the diocese through our vigorous support of the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal. Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Darrin Connall Rector 6

This includes providing financial resources for seminary formation, priest retirement, campus ministry, as well as the administrative offices of the Chancery schools, development, marriage tribunal, etc. Parish goals are calculated at 20% of a parish s annual envelope, plate, and holy day income. The 2016 goal for our Cathedral Parish is $120,762. This is a significant amount which will require widespread participation from Cathedral parishioners. Please prayerfully consider making a sacrificial pledge by filling out an ACA envelope and returning it along with the regular Sunday collection. Additional envelopes are located in the pews - please make sure to mark CATHERAL on the envelope so that our parish gets credit toward our goal. Thank you very much!

Parents, mark your calendars - the final Stations of the Cross on March 18 th will be for your children! 8 Cathedral Communities Cathedral Community Coordinators are in the process of planning meetings for the month of March. Cathedral Communities meet once a month for 90 minutes of fellowship, food, and Catholic formation using the web platform Formed.org. If you have not yet signed up for a community in your neighborhood, please contact the coordinator of the Cathedral Community in your area by visiting flocknote.com/ SpokaneCathedral: Medical Lake/FAFB Judy Luce Cheney Melia Langdon Airway Heights Mike & Kathleen Kittlstved West Valley John & Wyn Jaccard East Valley Rich & Delia Breedlove River Falls Tower Don & Marilyn Jans Browne s Addition Ron & Suzanne Lopes West Hills Colin & Andi Harris Nine Mile Brian & MaryAnn Egan Eagle Ridge Ian & Janelle Hizzey Manito/Cannon Hill Rick & Robin Sparrow South Moran Prairie Sean & Kim O Doherty North Moran Prairie Rob & Malia Craven Cliff Cannon Pat Freeman If you do not see your neighborhood in this list, or have questions on how to join a Community, please call the office at Food Collection Food collection next week (February 28 th ) is for Father Bach Haven residents, who depend quite a lot on what we can contribute to the pantry. Supplies of canned proteins such as chili, chicken, tuna, and stew help the residents get through the last weeks of the month after their supplies from the one allowed trip to the city s food bank have run low. Large "bulk" donations of rice, oatmeal, soup mixes, pasta, and potatoes are divided by the social services coordinator so everyone gets an adequate portion until food stamps arrive. Residents do not have ovens, but many of these formerly homeless men and women are proudly learning how to cook healthy meals for themselves in the slow cookers and stove-top stock pots. Coffee is a much appreciated gift, and cookies can keep the residents from spending their few resources on snacks or candy. Thank you!

9 Diocesan Pilgrimage Chrism Mass Bishop Daly and Father Connall will be leading a pilgrimage to the shrines of France from October 2 nd to October 13 th, The highlight of the trip will be a two-day visit to the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. The pilgrimage is open to Catholics throughout Eastern Washington and will no doubt fill up fast. For more information and registration details, please log on to the diocesan website or Rice Bowl This Lent our community will again participate in the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl, a faith-in-action program that will help you experience Lenten spirituality by living in solidarity with people in need around the world. Pick up your family s rice bowl located at the doors of the church. Last week, CRS Rice Bowl took us to Columbia, where coffee beans are changing lives! This week we are taken to Laos, where Hongkham is using her love of cooking to provide for her family and feed an entire school. How do we use our passions and gifts for the betterment of those we meet? Prayer Chain The Prayer Chain is a group of parishioners who believe in the power and comfort of intercessory prayer for anyone who is suffering. Prayer requests are sent to the Prayer Chain facilitator and then transmitted by either or telephone to the members. If you would like to join this ministry, you may call Jane at or jschneider@mariah-group.com. The faithful of the Diocese of Spokane are invited to the Chrism Mass which will be celebrated at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, March 15 th at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Bishop Daly will be joined by the priests of the diocese for this annual blessing of Holy Oils. The name of this Mass comes from the Sacred Chrism which is one of the oils to be blessed and then distributed throughout the diocese for celebrations of Baptism and Confirmation. The other oils to be blessed are the Oil of the Sick And the Oil of Catechumens. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. 10 Scriptural Reflection February 21, 2016 Second Sunday of Lent Gn 15: 5-12, 17-18; Ps 27: 1, 7-9, 13-14; Phil 3: 17 4:1; Lk 9: 28B-36 Each liturgical year on the Second Sunday of Lent our Gospel Reading recounts what we call the Transfiguration of Christ. On the First Sunday (last week) we heard one of the accounts of Jesus temptations in the desert. There is a reason we hear this Gospel Word in this order. Last week we were informed of the temptations that await us, especially during this Holy Lenten period. This week the way to overcome these temptations is revealed. The word transfiguration comes from the Latin trans, which means across and figura, meaning form or shape. It signifies a change of form or appearance, and this is exactly what happened to Jesus; His appearance changed and became glorious. The description of the Transfiguration occurs in all three Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke). This is a proclamation of the Lord s divinity. It is intended for all of us. In fact, each of us is invited, just as Peter, James, and John are, to become a part of this experience. We are called to conversion and witness of the truth. That is what Lent should be all about for us. The stewardship message is that we need to strive for conversion, for grasping the hope offered by Christ. St. Thomas Aquinas wrote, At His Transfiguration Christ showed His disciples the splendor of His beauty, to which He will shape and color those who are His. Are we His? The Catechism of the Catholic Church says, Christ, Head of the Church, manifests what His Body contains and radiates the sacraments, the hope of glory. (CCC 568) 10
