These two incidences are a reminder that being located within the downtown core often means interacting with people who are afflicted with poverty, addiction, and/or a variety of psychological

6 Last Saturday morning I called 911 to report two young people yelling and physically fighting across the street from the Cathedral. A couple hours later a man was screaming obscenities and shaking his fist at the façade of the building he was obviously struggling with mental illness, intoxication, or a mixture of both. These two incidences are a reminder that being located within the downtown core often means interacting with people who are afflicted with poverty, addiction, and/or a variety of psychological difficulties. Given these circumstances, it is a violation of common sense to allow the sale of marijuana in our neighborhood. Selling drugs in the shadow of our Cathedral simply cannot contribute to the safety and well-being of people living, working, and worshipping downtown. I am very grateful to Senator Mike Baumgartner who has called a hearing regarding this matter on 12 th from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Spokane City Hall Council Chambers located at 808 W. Spokane Falls Boulevard. The senator is introducing legislation authorizing local governments to prohibit the operation of licensed marijuana retail businesses within alcohol impact areas (which is where the Cathedral is located). I will be testifying at the hearing and I strongly encourage parishioners to attend if possible. I realize this is a work day and thus may be too difficult for many to be present. If that is the case, I suggest contacting Senator Baumgartner s office to lend your support for his efforts. The senator s contact information is printed in today s bulletin. Thank you for your consideration and I pray that our efforts will bear fruit in making our neighborhood safer and more respectful of human dignity. 8 First Friday This coming Friday, 6 th, is First Friday and a day to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In an appearance to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, Our Lord promised that whoever receives Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays will receive specific blessings. Among these blessings are the gift of final perseverance and the promise to receive the last Sacraments before death. Plan on joining your fellow parishioners this Friday at Noon Mass. On the First Friday of every month, the Cathedral also holds Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. In those times we need to remember that God will never be outdone in generosity. He always takes our gifts and gives them back to us in extraordinary and generous ways.

One of the obstacles to being a good steward is fear. We can be afraid that if we give back our time, talent or, treasure, there will not be enough left for us. In those times we need to remember that God will never be outdone in generosity. He always takes our gifts and gives them back to us in extraordinary and generous ways. The chart below reflects our stewardship of treasure for the month of April. While we were slightly down for the month, our overall giving patterns reflect strong stewardship. You may be aware that in Jesus time (as well as in many parts of the world today) the common greeting was Shalom. That means, of course, peace.

Jesus makes a point of making it clear to His followers and to us that He is not just saying Peace the way people usually do, but from Him it is filled with more strength and meaning.

That is something we must believe. Trusting in the Lord is a key aspect of stewardship. In our world we are more likely to say Good-bye than Shalom.

Thus, when we say good-bye we are also giving someone the same message that Jesus gives us. God is with us always. He loves you.
