I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 6 For the last few months we have had the opportunity to celebrate various aspects of the mystery of Christ. It all began with preparing for the incarnation of Christ during Advent which then led fairly quickly into the penitential season of Lent. We observed Christ s passion, death, and resurrection and celebrated the coming of the promised Advocate at Pentecost. Then came the feasts of the Holy Trinity and Corpus Christi. We now enter that time in the liturgical year which we call Ordinary. Ordinary Time refers to that period in the Catholic Church s liturgical cycle which falls outside the major seasons mentioned above. It is reflected in the green vestments we see at Mass. Ordinary Time does NOT refer to those parts of the year that are unimportant. Rather, Ordinary Time is ordinary because it reflects the ordered pattern of the life of the Church. In other words, it reflects the regular rhythm of worship which should characterize what it means to be in an ongoing and consistent relationship with Jesus Christ. This is especially important to remember as we now enter into the summer months. The long winter is over and we now have a variety of opportunities for vacations, weekends at the lake, and other occasions for rest and relaxation. This is a great time to teach children and young people about those things which necessarily characterize an ongoing relationship with the Lord the most important of which is Sunday Mass. When I was a kid, it never crossed my mind that we would miss Sunday Mass while at the lake or on vacation. I even remember having to call the rectory on occasion (when my family would be camping in a remote location) to ask for a dispensation from our Sunday obligation. I learned early on that Ordinary Time meant continuing to live an ordered and ongoing relationship with Christ even in the midst of the lazy months of summer. As we prepare to enter the traditional months for some rest and relaxation, let us remember that this is a time to maintain our firm commitment to the ordinary rhythm of our Catholic life which we call, Ordinary Time. Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Darrin Connall Rector 6

9 Stewardship for May Time, Talent, and Treasure Members of the Cathedral Altar Society funded and staffed a snow-cone stand for dozens of children at the Corpus Christi Festival. The willingness of these stewards to give back to God some of their time, talent, and treasure cheered the hearts of our kids and made for a festive event. The Knights of Columbus cooked and served 400 meals for the Corpus Christi Festival. Members gave back a significant portion of treasure in funding nearly 60 pounds of hamburger and 40 pounds of hot dogs. Their time and talent was used to grill and serve a delicious BBQ meal. A Cathedral Parishioner gave back time and talent in sharpening dozens and dozens of knives used in the lower level kitchen. This gift to God helps to contribute to a well-run kitchen for our many parish events. The chart below reflects our stewardship of treasure. The biblical tithe challenges us to give back to God 5% of our income to the parish and 5% to all other charities combined. The chart below reflects your generosity which places us in a solid year-to-date financial condition. Stewardship Report for the month of May Budget for May Collected last month YTD Budget YTD Collected Envelope Collection $ 42,200 $ 31,944 $ 396,165 $ 414,222 Plate Collection $ 20,138 $ 19,635 $ 184,154 $ 207,114 2nd Collection / Poor Fund Collection $ 8,621 $ 11,462 $ 114,497 $ 121,632 It takes a significant amount of financial resources to maintain the ministry and mission of the Mother Church. Thanks to your stewardship of treasure, the following are just some of the expenses we were able to pay for the month of May: Avista Utilities $ 6, Clergy, Religious, and Lay Staff Salaries $ 23, Music Stipends $ 3, Religious Education for Children and Teens $ 1, Missalettes $ 1, How can I repay the Lord for all His goodness to me? 10 Scriptural Reflection June 5, 2016 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Kgs 17: 17-24; Ps 30: 5-6, 11-13; Gal 1: 11-14A, 15-17, 19; Lk 7: The late Msgr. Thomas McGread, who was pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Wichita, Kansas for more than 30 years, and is called by some the Father of Stewardship, said as he looked back on his experiences supporting and forming stewardship in his people, The real success of stewardship in our parish is found in the hearts of the people. Without a conversion of heart, no one is able to give of themselves as Christ has asked us to do. In today s Second Reading from St. Paul s letter to the Galatians, Paul speaks of his conversion, a change of heart that provided him with the inspiration and the strength to become the apostle and evangelist he was. We are called to conversion by stewardship but it does not have to be as dramatic as Paul s experience. Nevertheless, conversion influences us to be good stewards, and living stewardship translates into a lifestyle of service. Msgr. McGread recognized that serving rather than being served could be challenging for people. He said, Stewardship is a spiritual way of life and that is never easy, but anyone I have ever known who became committed to being a steward never went back. Once they adopted that way of living, they were in it for the duration, for life. We must understand that to be a disciple of Christ, to actually be one of His followers, requires not just conversion, but action, doing something to serve others. There are many opportunities for service right here in our parish and in our communities. Joyfl Evangelization Golf Tournament 3225 N. Columbia Cir. Spokane, WA Come and Enjoy the Fun!
