1 Serving the members of Christ the King and St. James the Apostle parishes The Messenger Rev. Mr. John J. Carran, Deacon Administrator SAINT ANTHONY SAINT LAWRENCE SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE February 7, 2016 CHRIST THE KING In today's Gospel, Jesus teaches from Simon's boat. Jesus turns to Simon and instructs him about where to lower the fishing nets. Simon and others have been fishing throughout the night and have not caught anything. Simon protests, claiming that such an effort would be futile. Simon ultimately obeys Jesus and lowers his nets into the deeper water as directed. Notice here that Peter calls Jesus by the title master. He already recognizes Jesus as a person of authority. They catch so many fish that the nets begin to tear; Jesus' presence has created abundance out of scarcity, just as it did at the wedding feast at Cana, which we heard at Mass just a few weeks ago. Simon Peter becomes a follower of Jesus immediately. He calls Jesus Lord the title given to Jesus after his Resurrection and protests his worthiness to be in Jesus' presence. Today's Gospel, therefore, marks a turning point in the relationship between Jesus and (Simon) Peter. Two of Simon's partners are also named as witnesses to the event described in today's Gospel: Zebedee's sons, James and John. Yet Jesus' words are addressed only to Simon. Jesus gives Simon a new job, telling him that he will become a different kind of fisherman. No longer will he catch fish; instead he will catch people. In these words, we hear the beginning of the leadership role that Peter will have within the community of disciples. Peter was chosen for this role. His task will be to bring others to Jesus. Already he is doing so; the Gospel tells us that all the fishermen with Peter also left their nets and followed Jesus. TODAY S READINGS 1st Reading Isaiah describes his vision and call from the Lord. 2nd Reading Paul reminds the Corinthians of the gospel that he announced to them. (1 Corinthians 15:1-11) (Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8) Gospel The fishermen (Simon, James & Psalm A song of thanks to God who John) leave their fishing boats and follow. (Luke 5:1-11) saves us. REFLECTION From the Desk of Deacon John: FEBRUARY 7, 2016 I would like to thank Bob and Mary Jo Summers and all who participated in the Corn Hole event last Sunday. There were about 40 of us who gathered to participate in the fund raising event for Alpha Omega Center. It would be nice if this became an annual event as I would like to return to defend my record of 0 and 2! This coming Wednesday we begin the holy season of Lent. I would like to draw to your attention the Lenten Regulations: 1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States. 2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of No one should consider this obligation lightly. 3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity. 4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. 5. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law. Please see our bulletin for the Ash Wednesday schedule. We will once again have Lenten Vespers, Stations of the Cross and Eucharistic Adoration throughout Lent. These are wonderful opportunities to experience God s grace. Wishing you a Spirit filled week, and may your Lenten journey be fruitful. God love you, Deacon John ASH WEDNESDAY SCHEDULE 9:00 a.m. Mass and ashes at St. James the Apostle 4:00 p.m. Service with the distribution of ashes at St. James the Apostle 4:00 p.m. Service with distribution of ashes at St. Anthony 7:00 p.m. Mass and ashes at St. Anthony READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 7 FEBRUARY 14 Sunday: Is 6:1-2a, Cor 15:1-11 Lk 5:1-11 Monday: 1 Kgs 8:1-7, 9-13 Mk 6:53-56 Tuesday: 1 Kgs 8:22-23, Mk 7:1-13 Wednesday: Jl 2: Cor 5:20-6:2 Mt 6:1-6, Thursday: Dt 30:15-20 Lk 9:22-25 Friday: Is 58:1-9a Mt 9:14-15 Saturday: Is 58:9b-14 Lk 5:27-32 Sunday: Dt 26:4-10 Rom 10:8-13 Lk 4:1-13

Visiting with our neighbors in front of the old church after Mass on Sunday was always a special time even long after we had moved on. St. James means home in so many ways. Please share with the CCD students what a wonderful gift they sent not just to Mom, but to us as a family. Cornhole Tournament raises $ Shortly before Christmas Mom fell and broke her arm. A THOUGHT FROM POPE FRANCIS When nature is viewed solely as a source of profit and gain, this has serious consequences for society. Pope Francis Par #57 of 2015 Encyclical: Care for Our Common Home Read the entire encyclical in English at the website Vatican.va. TRIVIA ANSWER: E) All of the above FEBRUARY 7, 2016 FASTING: Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are asked to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means eating only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the evening depending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal. ABSTINENCE from MEAT: All Catholics 14 and older are asked to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and ALL the Fridays of Lent. Knowing WHAT the church regulations are is obviously the easy part. Understanding WHY we fast and do acts of penitence is a much deeper and more meaningful activity. Are these Lenten restrictions more than just laws and obligations we HAVE to do and then we can feel righteous? If not, then why do we fast? What motivates you to fast? Here are some possible explanations that make sense to me. How about you? 1) One answer is that Jesus fasted! It is a biblical practice. So there must be something good about it whether it is an obligation or not. 2) Fasting can help us realize the place of food in our lives. It can put food in proper relationship to other activities in our day. 3) Fasting can force us to feel empty, so that we can be open and make room for God in our lives. When my stomach growls, it is a good reminder to me to reflect on what I am truly hungering for in my life, what is truly important. 4) Fasting also fosters solidarity with the millions of people, especially young children who go without sufficient food daily. What do I do about that? "This is the fast I seek: release the captive; free the yoked; feed the hungry; shelter the oppressed and hopeless; clothe the naked." Isaiah 58:6-7 ST. JAMES BIBLE STUDY Our weekly Bible Study sessions are held at St. James Parish in the Great Room. Choose to come either Monday nights 7:00-8:30 or Tuesday mornings 9:15-10:45. All are welcome to join our friendly group as we continue studying the Gospel of John. This week we are reading Chapters 20 and 21 on the Empty Tomb, Mary Magdalen and the Resurrection. Contact Sr. Zoe Ann for more info.
