1 Serving the members of Christ the King and St. James the Apostle parishes Rev. Mr. John J. Carran, Deacon Administrator SAINT ANTHONY SAINT LAWRENCE SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE CHRIST THE KING In today's Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth. A large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds himself facing stiff opposition from his family. This was likely Jesus' large, extended family. The Semitic language has no specific words for extended relatives, so everyone is "brother" or "sister." The entire clan has gotten wind of Jesus' preaching, and they are not amused. In Jewish culture, teachers and scribes underwent intensive schooling and apprenticeships, none of which Jesus had done. The family knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the rabbi. For them, Jesus' bold preaching threatened the reputation of their family! Jesus' words to his family can seem controversial. "Who are my mother and my brothers?" Yet, Jesus knows what he is about. He has always known he would be about the business of his Heavenly Father. And what is that business? It is the business of the new covenant and the Kingdom of God. In this Kingdom, we are all adopted sons and daughters of the King. Jesus begins, even now, to expand the perspective of his listeners. Being welcomed into this family does not depend on our families of birth or ethnic origin, but a wholehearted commitment to "do the will of God." We, the Roman Catholic parishes of Christ the King and St. James the Apostle, because of our faith in Jesus Christ and our love for one another, commit ourselves to continue the mission of Jesus Christ. As people of God, we are called to evangelize by: Inviting people to worship with us Reaching out to the less fortunate Educating ourselves and others in the Catholic Christian faith Recognizing the gifts and talents of everyone Respecting all individuals Committing ourselves to implement this vision of faith P. 5 The Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 J.M.J. Please continue to pray for Deacon John during this time of recovery. Whoever Does the Will of God is My Brother and Sister and Mother It should be no surprise that we refer to the relationships within our church or parish in terms of family. The roots of faith run deep and the bonds that we form with those we pray and serve with grow stronger with each encounter. Saint Paul reminds us in his letter to the Romans, The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ (Romans 8:16-17). By virtue of our baptism we share in the life of God and are welcomed into his family, the Church. Yet, this relationship of love is not passive or stagnant. We are called to live to the fullest the life and purpose the Spirit inspires within us. As we seek to form new relationships both within and among our parishes as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, may our efforts bring about the strengthening of our faith family. As we grow in love for Jesus and each other may we vibrantly fulfill our mission as sons and daughters of God and seek to do his will. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. As Father s Day approaches consider Retrouvaille: A Lifeline for Married Couples When couples are struggling, Father s Day can be a chore rather than a celebration. Retrouvaille may be able help put the joy back into the occasion. In marriage, communication is more than just talking. At some point, did you stop sharing about the things that were important to you? Did your spouse? Improving a marriage takes time and a conscious effort to learn about your spouse. Growing closer in a marriage does not happen automatically. Retrouvaille is a marriage program dedicated to helping couples grow closer and develop a stronger bond. You give your heart and soul to everything you do, between your work and your family. Are you giving your heart and soul to your marriage? Sometimes the distance between a husband and a wife can seem so wide that it cannot be repaired. Retrouvaille is a marriage program designed to bring couples closer together. Call today to begin the healing process beginning with a weekend on July 13. Contact Retrouvaille at More information is available at Bill & Evelyn Turocy Retrouvaille of Pittsburgh 1430 Elizabeth Blvd. Pittsburgh, Pa wturocy@aol.com TABERNACLE LAMP INTENTIONS: Christ the King: The Tabernacle Lamp is lit this week in memory of the parishioners of Christ the King Parish. St. James the Apostle: By the light of the Tabernacle Lamp, prayers are offered in memory of the deceased members of St. James the Apostle by the parish family.

6 Page 6 RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS This year in Lawrence County, we welcomed 5 adults as new members of our Catholic Church. At the completion of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), the new Catholics and their sponsors were invited to express their thoughts on the initiation process that they experienced. Each week in the bulletin, we will include a summary of the reflection that one person from the group shared. Today s reflection is from Jessica Flynn, a new Catholic from Mary Mother of Hope Parish. She had been baptized previously in another Christian denomination and was fully initiated in the Catholic Church this Easter, celebrating Confirmation and Eucharist. The symbol that I selected to represent my growth throughout the RCIA journey was a compass. I chose the compass because it symbolizes my faith journey. Anytime I feel like I am losing my way, God always has a plan to place me back on track to where I am supposed to be and every single time God does that my faith grows so much stronger than before and I always learn something new. We are now forming a new group of inquirers. If you know of someone who may be interested in learning more about becoming Catholic, please contact Sister Zoe Ann by calling the parish office. LABYRINTH WALK All are welcome to participate in a labyrinth walk at Villa Maria scheduled for Wednesday, June 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the field near the pond across from St. James cemetery. Participants prayerfully walk the outdoor grass path after receiving thematic instructions from the presenter. This ancient tool for the spiritual journey will be led by Sr. Therese Pavilonis, HM. For more information, call or go online at or contact Sr. Zoe Ann. BIBLE STUDY In the Bible, there are countless inspirational verses that you can turn to any time, whether you are experiencing devastating sorrow or great joy in your life, searching for direction or in need of motivation. During this week, let s reflect on a verse from the Word of God found in Matthew 17:20. If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. - New American Bible Revised Edition June 10, 2018 Trivia Answer: E) green The liturgical color of Ordinary Time is green. Each Sunday when you come to Mass this summer you will notice that the church is decorated in green material and that the presider and deacon are wearing green vestments. Why green? Green is the color of budding and living vegetation and is the universal symbol of nature. Because of this, green designates hope and reliance on God. During the many weeks of Ordinary Time in the summer, we hear in the Gospel readings the stories of Jesus and his public life with his disciples. While we do not celebrate a specific mystery of Christ during Ordinary Time like we do in the other liturgical seasons (e.g., Christmas celebrates his birth and Easter celebrates his resurrection), the period called Ordinary Time is devoted to the mystery of Christ in all its fullness. We focus attention on Christ s actions of interacting with others, healing, praying, and reaching out to those in need. Christ s life gives us hope to live our lives the same way, albeit with different circumstances and certainly in a different time and culture, but still responding with the love, forgiveness, and compassion of Christ to all we encounter each day. May the green we see every Sunday at Mass and the green we see in the beauty of this summer season remind us of that hope which Christ continually gives us! Growing in Reverence for Ourselves & the World Children, ages 5 to 10, are invited to the 13th annual outdoor GROW Camp at Villa Maria beginning June 14 through August 10. Kids can attend each week on either Thursdays or Fridays from 9: a.m. to 3 p.m, Activities include growing vegetables and flowers, swimming, games, nature hikes, and making new friends. Lunch and snacks are provided. Older youth, ages 10 to 16, are invited to an Outdoor Summer Experience at Villa Maria the week of July 9 to 13. From 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., they can participate in activities including fire building, campfire cooking, hiking, CPR, Native American culture, identifying plants and animals, swimming and team building. For more details on either program, go online at for a printable registration form or call or contact Sr. Zoe Ann.
