1 Serving the members of Christ the King and St. James the Apostle parishes Rev. Mr. John J. Carran, Deacon Administrator SAINT ANTHONY SAINT LAWRENCE SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE CHRIST THE KING Our humanity bleeds through today's Gospel passages in more ways than one. If we allow it, these Gospels hold a mirror to our own fickle hearts. The crowds cry "Hosanna" and the Apostles profess allegiance unto death. In a manner of days -- even hours -- Jesus is betrayed, abandoned, denied, condemned, tortured, and executed. As God, he could have stopped this horrific narrative from unfolding, but he doesn't. He allows free will to play itself out. Lent invites us to find ourselves in the people we encounter there. Have we acted in a way that betrays those we love or denies what we know to be good and true? Have we fallen asleep in our faith? Have we unfairly accused others of a crime or immorality we imagine, though perhaps they didn't commit? Do we help others carry their burdens? Do we stand in solidarity with those who suffer? Do we care for the dying? This week, take up today's Gospel again. Look carefully at the Passion narrative and sit with it in silence. Find yourself in the story and ponder its meaning for your own life. Journey with Jesus to the foot of the Cross so that you too may say, along with the faithful centurion, "truly this man was the Son of God!" We, the Roman Catholic parishes of Christ the King and St. James the Apostle, because of our faith in Jesus Christ and our love for one another, commit ourselves to continue the mission of Jesus Christ. As people of God, we are called to evangelize by: Inviting people to worship with us Reaching out to the less fortunate Educating ourselves and others in the Catholic Christian faith Recognizing the gifts and talents of everyone Respecting all individuals Committing ourselves to implement this vision of faith P. At the end of this week we will celebrate the Triduum. To what does the term Triduum refer? A) The atrium or entrance of a Trinitarian church B) Jesus in the tomb for three days. C) The Three Days between Holy Thursday night and Easter Sunday night. D) The three hours Jesus hung on the cross. E) The Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit (See answer on page 6)

5 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Page 5 From the Desk of Deacon John J.M.J. Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. O King of Israel. Hosanna in the highest. My dear sisters and brothers in Christ, today we come to commemorate Jesus entrance into Jerusalem on this Palm Passion Sunday. The crowds who welcomed Jesus chanting Hosanna to the Son of David all too soon changed their chant to Crucify Him, Crucify Him! as they came to realize that Jesus was not the earthly king they wished for, one who would restore Israel to its earthly kingdom. They failed to recognize and understand the kingdom Jesus was referring to was that of His Father s Heavenly Kingdom. They viewed everything with human eyes, rather than through the eyes of God. After our celebration today, we look to the Easter Triduum. On Holy Thursday, we will celebrate the Mass of the Last Supper when Jesus himself institutes the Eucharist, the great gift of himself, which is freely gifted to us each time the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered. On Good Friday, we will walk the steps of Jesus Passion and Crucifixion remembering His suffering and death for the sake of our sinfulness. This unselfish act of our dear Lord paid the price of our sins and opened the gates of Paradise for us. Then, on Holy Saturday, the culmination is realized as we celebrate the great Easter Vigil, when Jesus triumphs over sin and death by His glorious resurrection. This is such a beautiful liturgy starting with the blessing of the fire, then the blessing of the Paschal Candle and processing into the darkened church being led by the Light of Christ, which eventually illuminates the entire church. We then have the singing of the Easter Proclamation the Exsultet recalling the works of salvation. In the readings, we will hear once again of God s creation, the fall of humankind, the call of Abram, and the call of Moses to lead God s people out of slavery and receiving the Ten Commandments from God. All of this leading to the fulfillment of God s law in Christ Jesus, who brings salvation to all. This coming week is filled with a great deal to pray and reflect upon, especially all Jesus did in order to redeem us so that we can be reconciled with God our Father. May each of us take that extra time, not only to pray and reflect, but to also give thanks to our Lord for all he has done for us, even though we are unworthy sinners. May this Holy Week bear much spiritual fruit for each of us as we continue to answer the call of our Lord. God love you! Deacon John Blessed Is He Who Comes in the Name of the Lord Today we celebrant the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The crowds waved palm and olive branches as Jesus rode into the city on a colt. They welcomed him as royalty, so moved were their hearts in faith and trust of God. Yet, while Christ s procession into the city is a moment of joy, the joy is fleeting as the coming days lead to the passion and death of Jesus. The central mysteries of our faith that we celebrate this week highlight for us the lengths to which God will go out of love for us. It is appropriate to ask ourselves, then, what lengths will we go to for God. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! it is not just our parishes that we should hope to be transformed. We should also hope that our hearts are transformed in love and service of God and others. How are we called to be ambassadors of Christ, coming in his name to share the life and light of God with everyone we meet? As we await the On Mission announcements one month from now, may we prepare our hearts to share the love of God in all we say and do. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. Tabernacle Lamp Intentions: Parishioners may now request dedication of the Tabernacle Lamp in St. James the Apostle Chapel for their prayer intentions. A donation of $25 will dedicate the Tabernacle Lamp for a week beginning on Wednesdays and continuing through the following Tuesday. The Lamp intention will be posted as you enter the chapel. By the light of the Tabernacle Lamp in the chapel, prayers will be offered from March 21 through April 3 for Fr. Frank Almade by St. James the Apostle Parish.

6 Page 6 RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS Jason Mathieson is a catechumen (unbaptized) in the RCIA process of preparing to be fully initiated in the Catholic Church when he will celebrate Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil this year. Jason will be celebrating the Easter sacraments along with the other 4 catechumens and candidates from the various parishes in the area (one from St. Vitus, one from Mary Mother of Hope, and two from St. Camillus) all of whom have been meeting together as a group each week. The initiation liturgy will be held at St. Camillus Parish on March 31 at 8:30 p.m. Jason will be accompanied by his wife, Katie Mathieson, his sponsor and godfather, Pete Pascale, and his godmother, Elizabeth Wilson. We at St. James are so happy to welcome and support Jason as a member of our parish community and look forward to the unique gifts and talents he will bring to us. CARDS OF WELCOME: On the tripod in the narthex there is a poster with a picture of Jason. We invite you to take an address label for him from the envelope on the poster and then mail him a note or a card welcoming him and telling him of your prayerful support. Thank you for sharing your faith with those desiring to join us as disciples of Christ and members of our church. For more information about our initiation process, call Sr. Zoe Ann at ST. JAMES BIBLE STUDY All are welcome to join us at St. James for our weekly Bible Study on the Women of the Old Testament. It is not necessary to have attended sessions previously. You are welcome to use one of our Bibles or bring your own. We hope you will come and bring a friend to explore with our friendly Bible Study group the lives of some brave and inspirational women. In preparation for this week s session we will be reading about Woman as an Image of God in the Bible with a focus on Eve and Wisdom/Sophia in the books of Genesis Chapters 1-3, Proverbs 8, 9, 31 and Sirach 1, 24, 51. Contact Sr. Zoe Ann for more info. Trivia Answer: March 25, 2018 C) The Three Days The Triduum refers to the three days which we also call the Three Great Days, since they are our holiest days of the entire year. On these three high holydays, we celebrate the paschal mystery of Christ s death and resurrection. This is the central belief of our faith, the very reason we are Christians. It is so important to us that the Church gives us not just one day to celebrate, but three days, a triduum! The measuring of days in the Jewish tradition was from sundown to sundown, not as we today would count a new day beginning at 12:00 midnight. Hence the 3 days of the Triduum are the 72 hours from sunset on Holy Thursday to sunset on Easter Sunday. (There are four of our days involved, but actually only three 24-hour periods.) We begin the Tr iduum with the evening Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, continue through Good Friday and Holy Saturday, culminate our celebration with the Easter Vigil on Saturday night and Mass on Easter Sunday, and then end with Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday night. We hope you will join us for the special ceremonies during this reflective and joyous time of the Triduum centered on Christ s death and resurrection. We use many rituals that are experienced only once a year, e.g., the washing of feet, the veneration of the cross, lighting the new fire, initiating new members into the church, etc. You are invited to pray with us during the Triduum at the following times. Holy Thursday, March 29, 7:00 p.m., Christ the King, St. Anthony Good Friday, March 30 1:00 p.m., Christ the King, St. Anthony Holy Saturday, March 31 Blessing of Easter food baskets, noon, St. James Easter Vigil, Saturday, March 31 8:30 p.m. at St. James the Apostle Easter Sunday, April 1 8:45 St. James the Apostle 10:45 Christ the King, St. Anthony Public is invited to Palm Sunday Ecumenical Concert On March 25 (Palm Sunday) at 3 in the afternoon at Westfield Presbyterian Church on Mt. As the Pittsburgh Diocese moves into the implementation phase of On Mission for the Church Alive!, the Ignite! process is being introduced to select areas throughout the diocese to help unite the parish groupings in a way that will foster vibrant communities of faith. St. James the Apostle Parish will host the Ignite! Come and See meeting for those Catholics responding to the need for additional evangelization leadership in our diocese. This diocesan wide meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on April 10 th at St. James the Apostle in the Great Room. Fr. Alex Wroblicky, Associate Director of Evangelization and Missionary Outreach for the Diocese of Pittsburgh, will be facilitating the evening. The School of Missionary Discipleship describes the essence of Ignite! as a formation and consultation process to train parish evangelization teams in the principles and practices of the New Evangelization. The teams are trained to run evangelization initiatives in the parish and help enrich ministries of hospitality and outreach by identifying areas of need and aligning the gifts and strengths of parishioners with those ministries. Please pray for our parishioners that will be applying for the Ignite! process. Many from our district will be applying but only four or five will be chosen.
