SAVIOUR CHURCH? Are you a sinner? Have you been away from the church for a long time? Are you divorced or separated? Are you physically or mentally challenged? Are you from a different culture? Are you not accepted because of your sexual orientation? Are you elderly, a teen or young adult? Are you discriminated against because of your color? Are you feeling broken? Are you poor or out of work? Have you been imprisoned? Have you a feeling that you are left out? You are welcome here! This is your home, and we are your family!

2 February 10, 2019 February 3 Offertory $6, Attendance Do you have enough? Many of us come from a nation of material abundance. We have all the things we could possibly need not only to survive, but to thrive - food, shelter, mental ability, income, access to medical care. Most people in human history lived with far less than we. So why are we so dissatisfied? Some Christians can be drawn to the "prosperity Gospel." This is the idea that following God will bring us material abundance in this life. That surely seems to be the story of today's Gospel! Peter and his friends chose - with some faith - to put out their nets a final time at Jesus' command. "They caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking." What gift! What abundance! What prosperity! Peter and his friends caught more fish than they'd ever seen. Yet what is their response to this material abundance, this gift from God? They leave it behind. "When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him." Praying for God to meet our physical, material needs is not a bad thing! Jesus himself includes "give us this day our daily bread" in the prayer he teaches his disciples. The question is, how do we respond when our prayers are answered? Do we thank God briefly, or perhaps ignore Him completely and move on with our lives? Or do we respond as Peter did? "God? You showed up in an area that has no bearing on my eternal salvation. You gave me a gift I didn't even really need. You love me! You really do love me." Is our gratitude only surface level? Or do we allow ourselves, like Peter did, to respond with wonder, awe, and deeper discipleship?

3 Our Schedule for February 2019 is as follows: February 9 First Penance & First Communion Retreat (10 :00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at St. Saviour Catholic Academy gym) February 10 Class in session February 17 No Class (President s week) February 24 Class in session WEEKLY OFFERING ENVELOPES We want to say a great big word of THANKS to all our parishioners who have already taken their new box of Weekly Offering Envelopes for the year As you know, you will no longer be receiving your envelopes in the mail each month. All your envelopes are now in one box for the entire year. If you have not yet picked up your new box of envelopes, please pick them up at the back of church on the tables as soon as possible. If you do not receive envelopes now, but would like to receive envelopes, please see either Father Frank or Father Kevin after any of our celebrations of Eucharist and we will get you a box of envelopes. We encourage ALL our people to be registered members of Saint Saviour Parish Family and participate in the life of our parish to the best of your ability. If you have any neighbors who are ill or homebound, and see their box of envelopes at the back of church, please take their box of envelopes and deliver it to them. Thank You. Brownbaggers Homeless Outreach The Brownbaggers project serves the poor in the NYC parks during the winter months. Since 2009 we have delivered thousands of lunches. Meeting monthly in the Parish Hall at 12:30 pm, we assemble 100 brown bag lunches with food and clothing items donated by our volunteers. We then travel via subway to multiple Manhattan parks to distribute our lunches to those most in need, returning to Brooklyn by 3:30 pm. John Olash is the current director of our Brownbaggers HomelessOutreach Program. Volunteers can reach John at: johnolash@hotmail.com Twenty five volunteers are needed for this event. RSVP to: johnolash@hotmail.com Please RSVP now for Sunday March 10, 2019 Please consider donating warm socks, hats or gloves into the Brownbaggers Donation Box which will be located in the vestibule of the church after every Mass. Any donations received will be distributed at that month s Brownbagger event. Also, financial donations used to purchase food items can be made in the Parish rectory. 4 Our celebration of the season of Lent will begin Wednesday, March 6th. We have quite a number of activities and spiritual and educational opportunities and activities planned for YOU the faithful people of Saint Saviour Parish family. For now though, we want you to know the schedule for the distribution of Ashes on March 6th. Please note that ashes will ONLY be distributed within the context of our celebration of Eucharist! Ashes will be distributed during the following Masses here at Saint Savior on Wednesday, March 6th: 8:30 a.m. 12:05 p.m. 7:30 p.m. INTERNATIONAL POT LUCK DINNER & MARDI GRAS CARNIVAL Join Saint Saviour Parish on Sunday, March 3rd. At 12:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall Price of Admission is a dish to share (appetizer, main dish, side dish, dessert) reflecting your family s nationality. Please fill out the form below and return it in the collection basket or drop in the rectory mail slot. Carnival games for all to play, Mardi Gras and international music. Celebrate your family heritage and prepare to celebrate the beginning of Lent. Drop off your dish on Sunday, March 3rd before morning Masses. 5 FEAST OF SAINT VALENTINE On Thursday, the world celebrates Valentine s Day, that day on which we get to tell that special someone how important they are to us and how grateful we are to have them in our lives. Yet the person known as Saint Valentine is really shrouded in mystery, as we don t know very much about him. We believe he was a holy priest who was beaten with clubs and beheaded because he was caught marrying Christian couples at a time when being Christian was not tolerated. Other than this, nothing is known about the man whose name people honor on February 14th each year. BRING BACK THAT OLD PALM! Everyone wonders what to do with that old palm they received last year on Palm Sunday. Well, wonder no more! We invite ALL members of our parish family to bring back their old palm right here. You may bring back old palm to create the ashes that will be distributed here in church on Ash Wednesday which happens to fall this year on March 6th. We still have Mass Intentions available for both weekday AND weekend celebrations of Eucharist. Please consider having a Mass celebrated for a loved one or family member either living or deceased. We are ALL in need of prayers, and there is no greater prayer than the celebration of Eucharist. Each Mass Intention is only $ If you are interested in having a Mass celebrated in memory of a deceased loved one, or in honor of someone who is living, please call Emily at the Rectory and she will be more than happy to assist you. BOX TOPS The students at Saint Saviour Academy and our Box Top collectors from the Parish submitted a total of 1,900 Box Tops to General Mills in the last quarter of 2018 for a total of $ Next submission date is: March 15, Please keep clipping Box Tops from all of your General Mills products. The yellow collection box is in the back of the Church.

6 LENT IS COMING ARE YOU READY? While we have just concluded our Christmas Season, it might be a good time to remind everyone that the liturgical season of Lent will be starting in just 4 weeks. Lent arrives on March 6th and we want ALL the members of our parish family to know that we are planning a number of events, services and activities that will enrich us spiritually throughout this sacred season of penitence and prayer. We do hope you will consider joining us for some (or all) of the many opportunities we have planned this Lent so keep your eyes open for more information in the next few weeks.
