1 Serving the members of Christ the King and St. James the Apostle parishes Rev. Mr. John J. Carran, Deacon Administrator SAINT ANTHONY SAINT LAWRENCE SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE CHRIST THE KING Jesus taught that unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it cannot bear fruit. It will remain the same always and will not lead to any type of growth. We are the grains of wheat that need to die to ourselves in order to be born again. However, many of us are the same today as last Lent and the many Lents before that. We have not moved forward to a more mature faith that makes it possible for us to be transformed. Surrender is not easy. But we need to see our observance of Lent as a way to move forward. No athlete lifts the same weight forever. No dieter finds satisfaction in losing the same 5 pounds year after year. We must work to always be moving toward holiness. This is the commitment of an everyday steward. We are called to pray today than yesterday. We are called to give more today than yesterday. We are called to love more today than yesterday. Standing still is not an option. Our God is calling us to grow in our discipleship and stewardship for the benefit of our souls and the health of the Body of Christ. May this Lent be a time of moving forward and may we all draw ever closer to our God who calls us to leave it all behind and follow Him. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS We, the Roman Catholic parishes of Christ the King and St. James the Apostle, because of our faith in Jesus Christ and our love for one another, commit ourselves to continue the mission of Jesus Christ. As people of God, we are called to evangelize by: Inviting people to worship with us Reaching out to the less fortunate Educating ourselves and others in the Catholic Christian faith Recognizing the gifts and talents of everyone Respecting all individuals Committing ourselves to implement this vision of faith P. 5 The Fifth Sunday of Lent Page 5 From the Desk of Deacon John J.M.J. Hard to believe we are celebrating the 5th Sunday of Lent! Time, as they say, waits for no one. With Holy Week and Easter just around the corner please note our schedule for the celebration of the various liturgies: Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord s supper will be held at 7 p.m. at Christ the King Good Friday Celebration of our Lord s Passion will be held at 1 p.m. at Christ the King Holy Saturday Celebration of our Lord s Resurrection will be held at 8:30 p.m., at St. James the Apostle Easter Sunday - Liturgies for Easter Sunday will follow the regular Sunday Mass Schedule. We will welcome as our celebrant for all Holy Week and Easter liturgies Fr. Philip Farrell, our Regional Vicar and Priest Director. Last week I had let you know about my recent health issue with a kidney stone. Well as it turned out, it was more than one stone, which caused me to cancel my travel plans to visit my mom. The largest stone had to be surgically removed. I could not believe how one relatively small stone could cause so much pain. In reflecting upon the amount of pain I felt at least until the medication took effect I could not help but turn to the Cross of Jesus. In meditating upon our crucified Lord, I could not imagine the amount of excruciating pain and suffering he endured. Here I am in pain, but nothing compared to the pain and suffering of our Lord. What is even more amazing to think about is the fact that our Lord would have suffered all he did even if just for one person! That is how much we are loved by our God. So, as we make our way through these final weeks of Lent, may we be ever mindful of the suffering of Jesus and of the great love God has for us. Recently, the diocese announced that Bishop David A. Zubik has called for another class of Permanent Deacons. Presently there are nearly 100 permanent deacons serving our diocese, and there currently are two formation deacon classes in process. The next class of deacons to be ordained will be in Deacons serve in various ministries as well as serving at the Altar of the Lord. If you, or someone you know has expressed an interest in becoming a permanent deacon please have them contact me directly. Anyone interested must also have the recommendation of their Pastor or Administrator. There are pamphlets and information available in both churches that outline requirements and the deaconate program. All applications must be in no later than May 15, Let us all continue to pray for vocations, not only to the diaconate, but also to the priesthood, religious life and lay ecclesial ministers. The harvest is plenty, laborers are few! Wishing you a Spirit filled week. God love you, Deacon John St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary/Solemnity March 19 The spouse of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the legal father of Jesus according to Jewish law, Joseph is a model of humility and obedience to God s will. He followed God s instructions, given by angels in dreams, and took the pregnant Mary into his home as his wife, protected her and Jesus at the child s birth in Bethlehem through the family s sojourn in Egypt, and provided for them as a carpenter in Nazareth. Pope Pius IX named St. Joseph Patron of the Universal Church in 1870; he is also the patron saint of carpenters, the dying, and workers. Tabernacle Lamp Intentions: Parishioners may now request dedication of the Tabernacle Lamp in St. James the Apostle Chapel for their prayer intentions. A donation of $25 will dedicate the Tabernacle Lamp for a week beginning on Wednesdays and continuing through the following Tuesday. The Lamp intention will be posted as you enter the chapel. By the light of the Tabernacle Lamp in the chapel, prayers will be offered from February 28 through March 20 for Deacon John J. Carran by Ursie Fellner.

6 Page 6 MEET OUR CATECHUMEN S WIFE and SPONSOR Jason Mathieson is a catechumen (unbaptized) in the RCIA process of preparing to be fully initiated in the Catholic Church when he will celebrate Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil this year. Last week in the bulletin, we featured him with some information about his life. This week we will feature his wife and his sponsor. On August 6, 2016, Jason married Katherine Wilson Mathieson from McDonald, Ohio. Katie s family, including her parents Liz and Gary Wilson, her brother Steven, and her sisters Jessica and Gina, are members of St. Rose Parish in Girard, OH. A graduate of McDonald High School and Youngstown State University, Katie is now an 8th grade math teacher in the Struthers City Schools. She taught CCD and VBS for one year before coming to St. James. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family and traveling. Katie shares with us her thoughts about the initiation process: I ve really enjoyed listening to the speakers at the RCIA meetings on Thursday nights. What I enjoy the most is learning more about my faith with Jason and being involved in it together. I would enjoy getting to know other members of the church. I enjoyed helping at the fish dinner and I would like to continue to meet others and help when the opportunities are available. Jason s sponsor and godparent is Dr. Pietro Pascale, an active parishioner at St. James along with his wife, Jean, since Born in Brooklyn, NY, Pete was raised in Orange, NJ, with his parents, Joseph and Anna Pascale (deceased), his sister, Ann (deceased), and his brothers, Rocco and John. Pete graduated from Seton Hall University and received his doctoral degree from Rutgers University in A Professor Emeritus from Youngstown State University, Pete retired after teaching in the areas of education, statistics, research, psychology, and Latin. The Pascales have a son, Peter (Kathy), and grandchildren, Corrina, Luca, and Nate, in Minnesota and a daughter, Annmarie, (Michael) Lyons and grandsons, Tommy and Matt, of Wexford, PA. Pete s varied hobbies include woodworking, collecting small clocks, classical guitar playing, and making stuffed shells for the parish s social outreach! He has served the parish in many ministries (e.g., pastoral council, CCD catechist) and is currently the diligent chair of the Building and Grounds Committee. We, as a parish, thank Pete for serving in the initiation ministry as a sponsor and representing all of us at St. James as he accompanies Jason on his journey of faith. Pete s thoughts about St. James and the initiation process: St. James Parish is definitely our extended family. We feel the spirit and we are content to find a wonderful home to increase our faith by the support of the community. I want to thank the person who recommended me as a sponsor to Jason. There was a great deal of spiritual growth for both Jason and me. The Holy Spirit prevailed (as usual)! March 18, 2018 Trivia Answer: E) Judas In the Gospel, we hear the story of Judas, one of the 12 apostles, betraying Jesus with a kiss. The event took place in the Garden of Gethsemane after the Last Supper. Judas kissed Jesus revealing to the Roman soldiers which Jewish man was Jesus, the one they were seeking in order to arrest him. Judas who had followed Jesus as one of his closest friends gave him up for 30 pieces of silver. See Matthew s Gospel 26: Even today, we use the term a Judas kiss to refer to an act appearing to be done out of friendship, but in fact is motivated by a desire to harm the person. Actually, another good choice of an answer for this question might be letter A, Zoe, or whatever our individual name happens to be. Have we not also, more times than we d like to admit, played the role of Judas? When have we betrayed Jesus by externally giving the impression that we are Christians, good people and faithful followers of Jesus, while at the same time selling out to greed or whatever appears to benefit us at the moment? Are we really true disciples of Christ, or secret pretenders? And when we fail in following Christ, do we give up all hope, or do we accept God s forgiveness and seek restoration? During these last couple weeks of the Lenten season, let s re-commit ourselves to having our actions and the motives in our hearts be in harmony!
