1 Serving the members of Christ the King and St. James the Apostle parishes The Messenger Rev. Mr. John J. Carran, Deacon Administrator SAINT ANTHONY SAINT LAWRENCE SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE May 28, 7th Sunday of Easter John 17: 1-11A Today s reading is a prayer Jesus prayer reaffirms the complete union between Jesus and the Father. Throughout John s Gospel, Jesus has been presented as the Word, who pre-existed with the Father and was sent to do the Father s work on earth. In this prayer we learn that Jesus life and ministry have been directed toward one purpose, revealing the Father. When this work is accomplished, Jesus is to return to the Father to be glorified. Regardless of what happens to Jesus, in John s Gospel, Jesus and the Father are in charge. Even in the description of Jesus death, Jesus does not simply die but instead hands over his spirit. In today s Gospel we also note the distinction found in John s Gospel between the world and the disciples. The disciples are in the world, but they are separate from it because they have been given to Jesus. They are chosen from the world to be in service to the world for its salvation. This salvation has been accomplished in Jesus because Jesus has revealed the Father to the world, but the disciples will be sent by Jesus to make both the Father and Jesus known to the world. Jesus prayer is for the disciples work in the world. We, the Roman Catholic parishes of Christ the King and St. James the Apostle, because of our faith in Jesus Christ and our love for one another, commit ourselves to continue the mission of Jesus Christ. 5 Page 5 From the Desk of Deacon John, J.M.J. This Wednesday at St. Camillus Parish in Neshannock Township, Bishop David A. Zubik will administer the sacrament of Confirmation upon 17 young men and women from our good parishes. I still remember very vividly my own confirmation by then Bishop Vincent Leonard on the 5 th of June It was a wonderful day in being sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the years since I have called upon the Holy Spirit many times asking for guidance and direction. Let us pray for our young folks who will be confirmed in the Spirit this week that they may readily recognize and continually open their hearts to the will of God in their daily lives. May 28, 2017 Recently the Easter Bread workers of Christ the King Parish met with me to review the results of this year s fundraiser. I want to applaud and thank these dedicated workers for the many, many hours they put in over the three weeks of baking the most delicious Easter Bread in the county! This year the crew baked over 3,500 loaves of bread! Now that s a lot of dough! The crew presented to me a check of the monies raised this year. The amount of the check was $25,000.00! And that is also a lot of dough!!!!! My heartfelt appreciation to all who helped make this year the highest yet. My heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Marie Benedict, chairperson of the group, who worked countless hours coordinating all the ordering of supplies, the baking and work crews. The proceeds for this year have been designated to be applied to our Parish Share goal. We certainly look forward to next year! This weekend we celebrate Memorial Day Weekend, the unofficial start of summer. I would like to wish each of you a restful weekend and safe travels if you happen to be visiting family or friends. This is the time of year when many of us are looking forward to well-deserved rest and relaxation by taking vacation. It is also this time of year when parishes experience lower weekly collections. Please remember that our bills never take a vacation. Those pesky utility companies continue sending us bills through the summer. Thus, I ask you to be sure to keep up with your weekly offertory contributions by either mailing them in while you are away or by catching up with them upon your return from vacation. This will help in our being able to maintain a consistent cash flow throughout the summer months. Next weekend we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost the coming of the Spirit of Truth the birth of the Church which will officially close out the Easter season. The liturgical color for Pentecost is RED so if you are able, please wear something red to Mass on Pentecost. Please note we will have our annual mission appeal next weekend. Visiting with us will be representatives of the Sisters of Mary Immaculate who will be sharing with us their important missionary work. Let us be sure to extend to them a warm welcome as they visit our good parishes. Please note there will be a second collection to help support the good Sisters in their work for the Church, so please be as generous as you can in helping support the Sister s work. Also, let us continue to pray for all missions and missionaries as they work so unselfishly to bring the good news of Christ to the world. May the Holy Spirit always find a dwelling of faith in our hearts, and may our lives always be rooted in love. Have a Spirit filled week! Amen. - from Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Missionary Sisters to visit Christ the King and St. James the Apostle on June 3/4 The community of Sisters of Mary Immaculate was founded in 1948 in India by Bishop Louis LaRavoire Morrow, who was an American Bishop. He was the bishop of the diocese of Krishnagar, in India from The vision and mission of their community is the holistic development of families especially of women, girls and children. They try to fulfill this mission in the Church, by reaching out to the people in their spiritual, moral and material needs in towns, villages and rural areas of India and Africa through visits to families, the sick and homebound; pastoral, medical, and caring ministries; formal and non-formal education and other developmental activities. In 1981, we expanded our ministry to our house at Leechburg, PA. That year, the late Bishop William Connare invited us to work in the diocese of Greensburg, PA. We are engaged in pastoral, catechetical and caring ministries there. Trivia Answer: B) Sacred Chrism Sacred chrism will be used to anoint the young Catholics from St. James, Christ the King, and St. Camillus when they are confirmed this Wednesday evening at St. Camillus Parish. The three sacred oils that the church uses in ceremonies and sacraments are all made from olive oil. (So actually, even the choice of Letter A olive oil would be a good guess for the answer to this trivia question, since it becomes a sacred oil when it is blessed.) Sometimes, as is the case of the chrism, a perfume is added to give the oil a pleasing fragrance, symbolic of the goodness and sweetness of the Spirit of God. When the church uses the sacred oils, we pray that as the oil penetrates and soothes our skin and hands and forehead, so may the strength and healing of Christ penetrate our body and spirit to empower us and to heal any weakness or affliction. After we are anointed, we rub in the oil and delight in its fragrance and feel, as we remember God s love for us! Every year during Holy Week, the bishop of each diocese blesses the oils that will be used in all the parishes of that diocese throughout the year. So we just received our new oils in April and they were presented to the people of the parish during the evening liturgy on Holy Thursday. On the left wall of the sanctuary at St. James is an ambry, the special place where the oils are housed for all to see. What are the specific uses for each of the sacred oils? Oil of Catechumens: This oil is used for catechumens (children or adults) who are preparing to be baptized. Chrism: This is the oil that is used for 3 different sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders. The word chrism comes from the same word that Christ comes from, meaning the anointed or chosen one. When people are anointed during these sacraments with the sacred chrism, they become Christed, i.e., the person becomes, as it were, another Christ. At our Baptism and Confirmation we each took on the awesome honor and responsibility to be Christ in the world. Oil of the Sick: This oil is used as we pray for healing and strength at the time of illness, when the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process of welcoming new members into our church. This journey of faith is similar to the one people made when joining the early Church communities during the first several centuries after Christ s resurrection and ascension. The process calls on the entire parish for involvement and prayer support. If you know of someone who may be interested in learning more about the Catholic Church or just wondering about our Catholic way of life, please call Sr. Zoe Ann at for information about our initiation process. All are welcome!
