2 DATE & SUBJECT February 26, 2017 Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time You cannot give yourself to God and money should be posted in every seminary, every chancery, and every lay institute. Those of us who do church-work for a living know personally that you will get opportunities to go either way, but you cannot do both. And anyone raising a family, taking care of their elderly, or any other holy way of living knows the same thing. You have to make a choice: whom or what do you serve, at the bottom line? It s hard to remember that life is more than food, more than car payments, the second mortgage, braces, the college fund, the annual vacation, the debts from last Christmas, and keeping Mom comfortable at the nursing home. All of this is real and sometimes overwhelming. Life is full of things to be anxious about, and most of them are connected to money. Jesus does not mean to belittle our concerns. He is not saying these things are not important or worth our attention. But he does say that we have to know, resolutely where our allegiances lies. Because if it is with stuff, we will be disappointed when the stuff passes away. How well do you keep your promises to the people in your life? How do you reveal God to others in the way you love? In the way you make decisions? In your life-style? How much of your time, energy, and creativity goes into the pursuit of money? How much goes into the pursuit of a lie of holiness? Application: Contemplate the saying, You cannot give yourself to God and money. Post it on the refrigerator at the office, in the bathroom, or anywhere that it will be frequently before your eyes. Live with it for awhile, and let it take root in your heart. (Reprinted with permission for God s Word Is Alive 23rd Publication 1998) WELCOME TO ST. JOAN S Welcome to worship! In the words of the psalmist, let us exalt the Lord our God and worship at his footstool (Psalm 99:5). 3 Greetings of Peace. From the Pastor The St. Joan of Arc Parish Mission is this week! Join us on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm (February ). What is the goal of this mission? To help fill you with life. To help awaken you to what s really important in life. To help you discover how to live with each day with more passion and purpose. This Holiness Revolution parish mission is really for everyone. Whether you are advanced in your faith and hungry to be taken deeper, or if you are a person with a lot of questions about God and religion this mission is for you. Whether you are male or female, single or married, young or old, middle school or high school this mission is for you. Whether you ve been to a parish mission before, or never stepped foot at a retreat this mission is for you. Come to the mission! Invite a few people to attend the mission with you. Bring grade-school or high school teenagers to attend with you. Invite a co-worker who is hungry for more, even if they aren t catholic. Maybe invite someone in the parish or the school who you know doesn t come to mass each week and could really use an invitation back to the Church. Our mission presenter is Dan DeMatte. Dan is a vibrant speaker and man of great faith. His presentations will be engaging, informative, challenging, entertaining, and heartfelt. Please come and participate in the St. Joan of Arc Parish Mission for your own spiritual growth and as a good preparation entering into the Season of Lent which begins this week! Wednesday, March 1, is Ash Wednesday! Masses on Ash Wednesday are 8:00 a.m., 12:00 noon, and 7:00 p.m. Ashes are distributed at all masses after the Gospel and homily. (Sometimes we get calls asking, What time are Ashes? I would like to reply, About 7:21 p.m.! ) During Lent please take some time to grow closer to the Lord who saved and redeemed us. Some suggestions are coming to mass, celebrating reconciliation, taking time for personal prayer, giving-up and reaching-out, or coming to Stations of the Cross (on certain Fridays at 6:30 pm at St Joan of Arc: March 3 rd, 10 th, 24 th, and 31 st ). There are many more ways to enter into this Season of conversion and faith! Let me again give a reminder of some of the church rules for the Lenten Season - notably Fasting and Abstinence. Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older are to Abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays in Lent. How s this for a simple description of each? Fasting means, one full meal, two other light meals. (Together, the lighter meals are not equivalent to the one main meal.) Abstinence means no meat. Blessings and Peace for Mardi Gras and as we enter the Season of Lent this week! And I hope to see you at our Parish Mission. Fr. Gary February 26 in the morning. May our generous God bless you in abundance! Sr. Judy BLACK & INDIAN MISSIONS Next Sunday is the annual Collection for Black and Indian Mission. Our financial contribution helps support Catholic American Indian communities on reservations, rural areas and inner cities. The collection also supports African

PSR LENTEN PROJECT The CRS Rice Bowl is the Lenten Project of Catholic Relief Services, the official international agency of St. Joan of Arc Catholic School News By Mrs. Shelley DiBacco, School Principal Faith. Academics. Excellence Beginning on Monday, the students at St. Joan of Arc School will take the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills which is a nationally standardized assessment required by the Diocese of Cleveland. These assessments measure achievement in several important content areas including Reading, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The Iowa Assessments help teachers identify a student s strengths and areas that may need additional emphasis. The assessments produce information that enables sound decision-making and provide a focus for teachers to evaluate instruction. As a school, we use the test results to measure individual student growth from year to year and to monitor the progress of class groups to make sure that our school is meeting or exceeding learning targets. Please make sure your child(ren) gets plenty of sleep and eats a healthy breakfast. Complete with King and Queen cakes and the crowning of our school King and Queen, we will hold our annual Mardi Gras Sock Hop on Tuesday, February 28 th. Our school Lenten theme is Walk the footsteps of Jesus. During Lent we hope to stress that we are called to not just hear what Jesus has taught us by his words and actions, but to be like Him and live every day walking as his disciples. Lent offers us all a very special opportunity to grow in our relationship with God and to deepen our commitment to a way of life, rooted in our baptism. In our busy world, Lent provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon our patterns, to pray more deeply, experience sorrow for what we've done and failed to do, and to be generous to those in need. In order to give our students the opportunity to grow in their relationship with God, we have planned several activities. Our junior high students are invited to attend a Breakfast of Champions. These breakfasts are held on the six Thursdays during Lent. Students begin their day by attending 8:00 a.m. Mass. After Mass, breakfast is served in the Parish Hall during which the students will listen to a speaker who will talk to them about faith in their life. We will kick off our first breakfast this coming Thursday with guest speaker, Timothy Natale. Kindergarten registration in now open. If you have a child five years old or will turn five before September 30, 2017, you may register your child for Kindergarten. If you would like to schedule a time to tour our school and observe Kindergarten, please contact the School Office at to schedule an appointment. The EdChoice Scholarship is available to any Kindergartner who turns five years old by January 1, 2017 and if the family income level falls within the Federal Poverty Guidelines. This scholarship is also available to students entering 1 st through 3rd Grade in Fall This scholarship amount is $4, for elementary students who qualify and is renewable through 12th Grade. The forms for EdChoice Scholarship are available in the School Office. the Catholic Community in the United States. Your prayers, fasting, and sacrificial contributions support CRS s work with the poorest of the poor in 100 countries. The Rice Bowls will be distributed to each family in Grades PreK-4 Gr. 8 on February 26 and March 6. Thank you for your support and generosity of this wonderful project that will help so many in need!!
5 YOUTH MINISTRY SHOPPING WAR RECAP On February 19th, teens competed in our 7 th annual Shopping War event to buy groceries for the Chagrin Falls Park food pantry. The teens were divided into 3 teams, given a budget and a shopping list. To win, the teams had to buy required items on their list and budget their money. The remaining balance was used to buy bonus items on a point system and the teens chose from a list. Trophies included the Gold, Silver and Crystal Spork Awards and teens took home their trophies. The CF Park was contacted a week before so the lists reflected the current needs of the food pantry including fresh and frozen foods. The teens were encouraged to buy kid friendly food and their choices were a blessing to the food pantry. Thank you teens! HS NIGHT: DESERTED HISTORY On Sunday, March 5, 6:30-8 pm in the Parish Hall. God or stuff? Do you every wake up in the middle of the night consumed with sleep-stopping worries about job, money, clothing, shelter and more? Jesus knows we do and insists we can defeat useless worry by turning all of our concerns over to God in prayer. This makes God the master of our problems and allows his grace to empower us. We have a choice: constant, useless worry or productive trust in God. Which will you choose? Adoration and Benediction Join us for a Holy Hour of prayer Thursday, March 2, P.M. Followed by Adoration throughout the night until 8:00 A.M. Come and spend time in prayer before Christ present in the Eucharist. It will be an opportunity to gather as a community to pray for our world and for our personal needs in the presence of Christ our Savior. The Confessional at St. Joan of Arc A church, and the confessional, should be a safe place of refuge. You may recall the recent story of a priest in Cleveland who was attacked in the confessional. Parishes, people who work at churches, parishioners, and priests all need to be alert and try to ensure safety in churches, on church property even in the confessional. Here at St. Joan, we are currently adding another door in the confessional, putting a glass security windows in the confessional doors, and also adding a small glass window in the confessional wall. Yes, we need to continue to do the church's work. But we cannot be naive. We need to do what we can to make sure all people are safe (including priests!) physically and spiritually. Thank you and Peace. Fr.
