2 DATE & SUBJECT June 19, 2016 Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Who do the crowds say that I am? (Luke 9:18-24) Almost everyone believes Jesus existed and did at least some of the things Scripture says he did. But how we talk about who Jesus is and what it means that he did those things is where the lines are drawn between the faithful and the rest of the world. In this conversation with the disciples, a lot of possible identities for Jesus surface: a reincarnation of John the Baptist, recently put to death for preaching repentance. The return of Elijah, who never really died but was swooped up to heaven by the will of God. Any of a number of prophets long dead. The Messiah of God. The Son of Man. The suffering servant prophesied in Isaiah. What the crowds say about Jesus is never so important as what we say about him. Is he my Lord, or just the Lord of my religion? Is he my savior, or a savior hung on a cross on the wall of my parish? Is he my teacher, or a great teacher of ancient times? Doe he heal me, or was his healing just for lucky lepers of the first century? We can argue the theology all day, or for all time. But the only Jesus that matters for us is the one we really believe in. Contemplate an image of Jesus on the cross that has meaning for you. What do you see when you reflect on it? Do you think there are signs of prejudice or favor in your parish? In your diocese? In the church as a whole? Jesus poses the question to you: Who do you say that I am? No pious talk, just the facts. Application: Engage in a weeklong meditation on the cross. Put yourself in front of a different image of Jesus a few minutes every day and ask the questions, Who is Jesus? Write down your answers each day. (Reprinted with permission for God s Word Is Alive 23rd Publication 1998) WELCOME TO ST. JOAN S this is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it (Psalm 118:24). Welcome! 3 Greetings of Peace. Pastor s Column This is Father s Day weekend. The third Sunday in June is traditionally called, Father's Day - a day to remember fathers and fatherhood in general, including father figures, guardians, godfathers, and grandfathers. It is a time set aside to value a father's role in one's life. It is also appropriate to remember God as a Father and can be a time to honor St. Joseph. I have heard it said that sons and daughters can wear a red rose to honor their father, but a white rose if dad has passed away. It seems Father's Day has its roots in a Methodist Episcopal Church in Fairmont, WV from A tragic mining accident killed 250 men, most of them fathers, resulting in about 1,000 children without a dad. The church held a service in remembrance of those men. Another story about the roots of Father s Day is from 1910 in Spokane, WA. A woman, Sonora Dodd, wanted to honor her father - who raised six children on his own. Her mom died in childbirth with her sixth child. When Dodd heard a sermon on Mother s Day, she thought of her father s love in raising the children on his own Over the years Father s Day caught on and was celebrated more and more. President Johnson issued a proclamation in 1966 and Nixon made Father s Day official in Of course, Father s Day is the companion celebration of Mother's Day (which is celebrated on the second Sunday in May.) The first Mother s Day was celebrated in Grafton, West Virginia in Did you know Hallmark says Father's Day is the fifth largest card giving holiday! And here is another: Did you know there are more than 70 million fathers in the United States? So - to all dads, grandfathers, godfathers, step-fathers, foster-fathers, and men who reflect the goodness and love of God the Father - Happy Father s Day. Blessings and Peace, Fr. Gary dryer of dishes, fulfiller of wishes. Guard him, O Lord! So, take a minute to give him a hug, a squeeze or a kiss or a handshake. And say an extra prayer for all those Dads who have gone before us not just on Father s Day, but every day! PETER S PENCE COLLECTION The Peter s Pence Collection helps support the Holy Father in his charitable works. The collection is taken up worldwide to support the victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. The collection will be taken up the weekend of June 23rd and 24th. Serious illness, grieving the death of loved ones, divorce, job losses, addictions, domestic violence, strained relationships and the demands of work, school and family responsibilities can be overwhelming. Christian families who deny their problems reuse the cross. When they face their problems and pull together to pray, encourage, mourn and struggle, they find Christ is with them giving hope, strength and guidance. They find new life. Fathers have a unique role and responsibility to lead and teach their children the meaning of the cross, how to handle problems, and to suffer for truth and justice.
