2 Greetings of Peace. We just completed the Christmas Season in church this past weekend and now everything is back to normal, as they say! The stores have been decked out for Valentine s Day - and I have also seen some accoutrements for St. Patrick s Day! Amazing. Looking ahead, the next Season (in church) is Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6. Until Lent, we are in the midst of Ordinary Time in our Liturgical Year. We also know it is the Season of Winter! Here is a short lesson about The Liturgical Year. Our church calendar begins in Advent and continues through the Christmas Season. The time after the Christmas Season, until Lent, is named Ordinary Time - which continues until we begin Lent and celebrate the Easter Season. The time after Lent and Easter (until the next Advent Season) is again called Ordinary Time. However, the term Ordinary does not mean regular or unspectacular. Rather, it is derived from the word we use for counting (as in 1, 2, 3, etc.). These are ordinal numbers (if we remember our elementary school mathematics!). We basically count the Sundays and Weeks of the Year that are not Advent, Christmas, Lent, or Easter Time. So now, since it is not Advent, Christmas, Lent, or Easter, we are in Ordinary Time. Remember, though, with our faith, nothing is Ordinary. We truly believe that Jesus, who was born for us, died for us, is raised up and is lifted up to heaven. He promises us the gift of eternal life. We celebrate this Joyful Mystery each Sunday and it is indeed Extraordinary! In this ordinary time we should remember that this child who was born for our salvation is all grown up and teaches us how to live and love. Pope Francis shared these sentiments at the beginning of the New Year when he asked all people of faith to focus on building a peaceful and welcoming world around us - and particularly in our own lives and relationships. The Holy Father suggested that we all set aside a moment of silence each to be with God - and to leave behind the burdens of the past and to start over from the things that really matter. I say, Amen! Have a great week. Blessings and Peace, Fr. 4 St. Joan of Arc Catholic School News By Mrs. Shelley DiBacco, School Principal Faith. Academics. Excellence. The month of January seems to be going by so quickly. This is always such a busy month! The second semester/third quarter begins on January 20 th and report cards will be distributed on Friday, January 25, Catholic Schools Week begins on Sunday, January 27 th with 11:00 Mass followed by our Open House from 12:00 2:00. Students attending 11:00 Mass are encouraged to show their SJA pride by wearing their school uniform to Mass. In preparation for our Open House, our 7 th and 8 th graders have been busy over the past three months working on their Science Fair projects. Science Fair is a journey of scientific inquiry. It begins with students answering a scientific question by conducting an experiment and the process ends with our Science Fair showing the students that their work matters to the school community. Science Fair projects integrate skills they ve learned in other classes including: math skills, computer skills, research skills, and writing and presentation skills. Our eighth graders have been busy this week completing their high school applications. Please keep them in your prayers as they begin this process. We congratulate Jake Romanini who has been recognized as an Ignatian Scholar at Saint Ignatius High School due to his outstanding entrance exam scores. The whole school is excited about our Book Fair. An amazing selection of books is headed our way. The Book Fair will open on January 27 th. At the Book Fair you will find the latest and finest titles for kids, as well as books of interest to parents. You can also contribute books to your child's classroom library. The Book Fair is a great way to get everyone excited about reading. See you there! The greatest form of marketing our excellent school is by word of mouth, so I ask all of you to spread the word about our school. Please invite family, friends and neighbors to join you at our Open House on January 27 th. This year, if a current family recommends St. Joan of Arc School to another family and that family registers, the recommending family will receive half off their registration fee! 5 Faith-filled Discussions Bible Study: Thursday from 8:30-10:00 AM Please join us for an eight-week study session focused on the Gospel of John. Held in the rectory basement with interesting discussions and wonderful DVD teachings. $15 fee for the study guide. To register Weekly Book Discussion Group Thursday from 7:00 to 8:15 PM Some books are best read slowly and thoughtfully, making notes in the margins as thoughts or questions come to mind, then discussing those thoughts with others. That s how this group moves through books by current and contemporary authors on Christian Spirituality. Our book is Field of Compassion by Judy Cannato. Cannato puts the "new cosmology" the dialogue between the scientific and religious accounts of the universe in plain language and links it to Christian theology. She convincingly connects the so-called Universe Story the scientific theories that say all life is connected and evolving toward a "new consciousness" of the oneness of all things with the Christian story, especially the theology of Karl Rahner and Jesus' teaching about this worldly kingdom of God. If you would like to participate, we will meet in the Rectory basement beginning January 17. Purchase the book and read the introduction and Chapter 1 for the first meeting. If you miss a meeting just keep up with the reading and come when you can. Please RSVP Matt Valencic at or mmvalencic@roadrunner.com. Catholic Grief Support Group Catholic Cemeteries Association offers a monthly Grief Support Group that meets for one hour on the third Sunday of each month (4th Sunday if it falls on a holiday) in select cemetery offices. The locations are: Holy Cross Cemetery, Brook Park - 3:00 p.m. Holy Cross Cemetery, Akron - 3:00 p.m. St. Joseph Cemetery, Avon -- 3:00 pm Community Life Elizabeth Ministry is an outreach to women in special times of motherhood, based on the story of Mary and Elizabeth.
