3 Page 2 JULY 12, 2015 From deacon Roy s desk Dear sisters and brothers in Christ: It s been a grace filled week for sure. Fr. Bryan is settling into the rectory, Benedict House, as we prepare to welcome several seminarians for a brief summer stay with us. They will be followed by a number of aspiring seminarians who will come in September and be living here in community as they work or go to school and discern their vocational call to the priesthood. Their presence will continue to enliven and help us all grow as a parish community. New parishioners or returning parishioners continue to come into the parish center on almost a daily basis and I can feel the Holy Spirit working hard to help St. Benedict Parish grow even more. This is clear evidence that the Gospel is being proposed to many more people (and not imposed as Fr. Bryan shared with us last Sunday in his homily.) We continue to receive generous Annual Catholic Appeal gifts that put us further toward our goal of reroofing Benedict House and the parish center this year at a cost of more than $50K. I have no worries that we will achieve our goal of a financially balanced budget that will also allow us to reach out to all our neighbors in need through the St. Vincent de Paul conference, the efforts of our great Cabrini Ministers, and all the pastoral care organized by our Human Concerns and Social Just Committee. In this week s Gospel, Jesus sends out the disciples two by two, exhorting them to take little with them other than their faith in Him and their trust that they will be cared for by those to whom they minister. May we as a parish community continue to put our trust in the Lord as we go out to make a difference in the world around us. Have a most blessed week. Your servant in Christ, Deacon Roy Harrington, Pastoral Coordinator Worship and spiritual life MOVING SOME OF OUR RELIGIOUS PIECES Over the month of July you may notice that many of the treasures of our church are being moved around. Beginning with the vestibule, we have removed a wall of bulletin boards to create an art wall and minimize the clutter so that more attention is drawn to our wonderful art pieces. Our statues of saints will be moved to spaces according the direction of the USCCB regarding placement in the church. We will also be returning our patron, St. Benedict, to the alcove behind the baptismal font to be housed as the protector of our sacramental oils. Did you know, the crucifix affixed to the wall to the right as you enter the vestibule is the original crucifix that was above the altar of our old church since 1907? Yes, 108 years ago! POPE FRANCIS & THE WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES PILGRIMAGE Archbishop Peter Sartain invites you to join the Archdiocesan pilgrimage to the World Meeting of families in Philadelphia, Sept. 22 nd through 27 th. This is a historic opportunity to see Pope Francis on his first visit to the United States. The week-long Congress also offers inspiring keynote speakers and dozens of timely workshops. For complete information on how to register for this exciting pilgrimage, visit BE MORE ACTIVE IN YOUR CHURCH Have you considered taking a minute to think about more involvement in your church? We are looking for parishioners that would like to be part of Mass (Sacristans, Altar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers or Lectors), office help (a couple of hours a month in the office), maintenance help (working with Anita on facility needs). Call the parish office if you are interested in sharing your time and talent with the church. Consider it, we can use you! ST. HENRY II ( ) A German king and Holy Roman Emperor, Henry was the only German king to be canonized. Henry had considered becoming a priest, but when his father died, he inherited his father s title of Duke of Bavaria. He became King of Germany in 1002 and married Cunegunda, who is also a saint. He had a reputation for being learned and pious and was a positive influence in Church-State relations. At that time, secular authorities appointed bishops and often selected their political allies. Henry appointed bishops who would be good pastors, and supported them in their work. Although he waged many wars, he was not the aggressor but fought only to protect his borders and preserve peace. Henry is a patron saint of Benedictine oblates and is invoked against infertility, for he and his wife were childless. (2015 Sourcebook pg.260) CABRINI MINISTRY TRAINING We are looking for individuals who are committed to growing in their faith, willing to share the Gospel of compassion with others, and ready to be transformed by the Holy Spirit! We offer an extensive training program that meets weekly from October to March. This training will forever change the way you communicate with those you love, the way you understand spirituality, and the way you reach out to others in need. Our training is based on Catholic theology, but is open to Christians of all denominations. Contact carla@cabriniministry.org. WELCOME! 4 Page 3 JULY 12, 2015 Worship and spiritual life THE MYSTICAL CIRCLE OF LIFE The beautiful Rose Window of St. Benedict Church is representative of the work of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. It is also symbolic of the endless circle of life in a Catholic Parish. The Center burns with the four zealous flames symbolic of the four Gospels forming the focus of the dominant ruby cross. The inscription I the inner circle proclaims, To Preach The Gospel To The Poor He Hath Sent Me. Eight roses flow from this circle representing the Beatitudes. The four Evangelists appear near the perimeter. Bands of blue and silver emanate from the ends of the cross symbolizing the Water of Life. Two lances cross the window with one containing the tip of steel that struck the wound in Christ, and the other containing the sponge used to quench His thirst with vinegar and gall. The nails of the cross appear at the base and the entire window is encircled with a stylized crown of thorns. We encourage you to take a minute to examine and enjoy the beauty and the meaning in this window. There are many Rose Windows throughout the United States and Europe, please enjoy what is unique in ours. THE SAINT BENEDICT MEDAL This medal originally came from a cross in honor of St Benedict. On one side, the medal has an image of St Benedict, holding the Holy Rule in his left hand and a crossing his right. There is a raven on one side of him, with a cup on the other side. Around the medal's outer margin are the words "Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur" ("May we,at our death, be fortified by His presence"). The other side of the medal has a cross with the initials CSSML on the vertical bar which signify "Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux" ("May the Holy Cross be my light") and on the horizontal bar are the initials NDSMD which stand for "Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux" ("Let not the dragon be my overlord"). The initials CSPB stand for "Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti" ("The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict") and are located on the interior angles of the cross. Either the inscription "PAX" (Peace) or the Christogram "IHS"may be found at the top of the cross in most cases. Around the medal's margin on this side are the Vade Retro Satana initials VRSNSMV which stand for "Vade Retro Satana, Nonquam Suade Mihi Vana" ("Begone Satan, do not suggest to me thy vanities") then a space followed by the initials SMQLIVB which signify "Sunt Mala Quae Libas, Ipse Venena Bibas" ("Evil are the things thou profferest, drink thou thy own poison"). This medal was first struck in 1880 to commemorate the fourteenth centenary of St Benedict's birth and is also called the Jubilee Medal; its exact origin, however, is unknown. Saint Benedict has been also the motive of many collector's coins around the world. The Austria 50 euro 'The Christian Religious Orders', issued on 13 March 2002 is one of them. stewardship TODAY! CELEBRATE OUR PARISH, OUR PATRON, OUR COMMUNITY The annual Parish Picnic is today across the street in front of the church after the 10 AM Mass. Turn you side dishes over to the table attendants so that they can give you a break to visit and have fun as we celebrate the 60th year of the opening of our existing church, the 90th year of our existing school building and the 108th year of our community. HOSPITALITY HOUR Please join our Coffee Hour Hosts next week: 8:00 AM Len and Judy Andrews 10:00 AM We still need a host! Monday July 20th, 1-7 PM. Sign up today! STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE for July 5, 2015 Sunday Offerings: $ Today s readings are about being chosen and sent. The prophet Amos was chosen by the Lord and sent to use his talents for the people of God. The Gospel recounts the story of the sending of the twelve. In the second reading, St. Paul reminds us that we, too, are chosen. For what have I been chosen? To whom have I been sent? Congratulations, we have reached our goal for the Annual Catholic Appeal! We have not heard from everyone in the parish, if you have not yet, consider a gift of a $1/day or $365, although gifts of any amount are needed and greatly appreciated! Since we have reached our goal, all donations now come directly back to the Parish so that we can work on replacing the roofs on Benedict House and the Parish Center. Thank you!
