1 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 16, 2014 Pray, and let God worry. ~Martin Luther Sun Mon Tues On those mornings when the day ahead looks overwhelming, I make sure to drink my morning coffee out of the mug my cousin gave me, that has printed on it this practical advice about prayer. (My cousin and I are both former Lutherans who came into the Catholic Church.) How to find time to pray? How to pray in a way that means something for me? Or even, just how to pray? The disciples asked Jesus these questions, and got the Lord s Prayer as their answer pretty good! Most Christians, I think, wish they knew more about prayer and did prayer better which is going to be something different for each individual. This is why St Augustine Church is having a Prayer Fair as part of our Masses next weekend. The spark came from a suggestion by a parishioner, and it has grown into a blazing fire of enthusiasm among our members preparing the Fair. Next weekend, all of the Masses except for the Latin Mass will be celebrated in the Parish Hall, surrounded by handouts and freebies and friendly parishioners to talk to about a huge buffet of ways of praying something for every taste. Have only a little time for prayer each day? There will be some quick prayers for you. Want to pray using your smartphone or computer? There s more than one app for that. Interested in a small prayer group? They are starting up in Lent. Want to grow a deeper prayer life? Short intros to the vast array of Catholic prayer traditions will be on hand, along with people who practice those ways of prayer. During the Masses next weekend, you ll have the opportunity to browse and shop the possibilities for prayer. And if you want to remain in your seat and pray, you ll be surrounded by an atmosphere of prayer. See you at the Prayer Fair! 2 E V E N T S & A N N O U N C E M E N TS The Parish is purchasing new hymnals to be in the pews by summer. All the hymnals will provide the music and the readings. Please consider memorializing a hymnal in memory of a loved one. Hymnals also may be donated in honor of an individual or of a family event, such as a baptism, special birthday, or another celebration - maybe even as a gift for someone special. The donor and the person being honored are recognized on a special memorial plate in the front of each book. (see below). This is a wonderful way to remind us to pray for someone. And not only would you be praying for this individual, but also would anyone who opens that hymnal to see that individual s name. The cost to memorialize a hymnal is $20. Please see insert for more information. Feb 20: Annulment Presentation at 7:00 pm in the parish hall. See insert for more information. Feb 22-23: Prayer Fair during all Masses. Feb 28 - March 2: Project Rachel Retreat for those who have had an abortion or are considering one. Project Rachel is a program of Catholic Community Services.
