5 The Pastor s Page THE BODY OF CHRIST. AMEN! A couple of weeks ago the children in our parish school received their First Holy Communion. This coming Saturday, the children in our Religious Education Program will receive their First Holy Communion. The Eucharist the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ was instituted by Jesus on the night before He died. At that time, He gathered with His friends at what we now call The Last Supper. He gave them His Body to eat and His Blood to drink so that they could have the nourishment and strength that they needed for all the days that they would have ahead of them. We, too, need the Lord s strength and nourishment as we continue on our pilgrim journey to the Kingdom. Please pray with me that our students will come to the Table of the Lord often and that they will not allow anything to come between them and this incredibly important gift. It is a sad reality that some people separate themselves from the sacraments and cannot partake of the Holy Eucharist. Please also join with me in prayer that our brothers and sisters who are separated from the sacraments may do all that they can to return to the full sacramental life of the Church. In addition, let us reflect a bit more upon that Last Supper event. We commemorate it each year on Holy Thursday. At the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, we recall the teaching that Jesus gave to His apostles as He washed their feet. He told them that, as He did, so they, too, were to do. Jesus is our great example. He taught us to love and to serve. He showed us to love and to serve. Now, He expects us to love and to serve. Let our celebrations of First Communion be vivid reminders to us of our responsibility to follow the Lord in complete faithfulness, serving the needs of all, loving all people, forgiving all who harm us, caring for the weak, the poor and the needy, and, generally, doing all that we can for the greater honor and glory of God. Congratulations, parish children, on the reception of your First Communion. Come to the Lord s table often to be nourished by Jesus Body and Blood. Do not be afraid to be more and more like Jesus each and every day of your lives. Like Jesus, be good examples to us! WHERE WOULD WE BE WITHOUT OUR MOTHERS?! Well, duh, that is kind of a stupid question, is it not? Because, after all, without a mom (or dad, for that matter) we would simply not be! However, a mother is more than a biological unit. A mother is unconditional love. A mother is support, care and understanding. A mother is a role model. A mother is a person who will be there for us at all times. A mother is a very special person. Happy Mother s Day to all our moms today! May God reward you for all that you have done, do, and will do for us! WE DEPEND UPON THE HOLY SPIRIT Very soon now, we will be celebrating the great Feast of Pentecost, the day when the Holy Spirit came down upon the Apostles and Mary in the upper room. We are so dependent upon God s Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, we would not have the grace and courage to live faith-filled lives in our world. Without the Holy Spirit, we would shrink in fear at the face of the enemy. I could go on and on citing examples of withouts. However, we do not have to worry about that, now do we. Because we have the Holy Spirit in our lives. We have the wherewithal to live good, holy, pious lives. We have the ability to tap the gifts of the Holy Spirit and to use those gifts for the good of all. We have all of that at our disposal, if only we would open our eyes and hearts to that reality and ask God to shower us with the gifts that come to us from the Spirit. We wait. We remember. We celebrate. We believe! ON THE LIGHTER SIDE There is an old story about a mother who walks in on her six-year-old son and finds him sobbing. "What's the matter?" she asks. "I've just figured out how to tie my shoes." "Well, honey, that's wonderful. You're growing up, but why are you crying?" "Because," he says, "now I'll have to do it every day for the rest of my life." Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary more than fifty years. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: May 14: Msgr. Julian F. Doktor (1965) May 15: Msgr. Clement M. Mlinarovich (1971) May 17: Rev. Eric A. Schaff (1969) May 18: Rev. Henry A. Smartz (1967) Page 5

6 THE GARDEN CLUB Who Says We Need Help?! Kidding aside, this is the busiest time of the year for our group and we could really use new members. To keep the parish grounds in the shape we can all be proud of takes the combined effort of many volunteers. We normally meet for 4 hours on Wednesday and Friday mornings. For a healthful, enjoyable experience come and join us! Any questions? Call Al at or George at Thank you! Sacrificial Offering for May 6, 2007 Adults $25, Loose $1, Children $17.98 TOTAL $26, Thank you for your generosity! CONTINUING THE JOURNEY I do not remember the year I first traveled to Notre Dame and visited the grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. My dad took me, that I remember. In the fifties the grotto was clearly one of the most memorable sights on campus. Today there are many. But the grotto is still special for me. July 7 th I will make my third return to the grotto as a priest to celebrate the Sunday liturgy at 9 p.m. for the closing of the Catholic Divorce Ministry annual conference at Notre Dame. This year the conference is called Water in the Desert. This is appropriate for many who will be in attendance as it was for me thirteen years ago. The conference will be water in the desert for many who are withering from lack of love, understanding, and feeling dried out and empty. When I first attended the conference I did not know what I was seeking. I knew that I was empty. It was amazing. I did discover that there was life after divorce. And yes our Church still loves us, even though we are divorced. I found life-giving water at that first conference and have gone back many times in many different roles. The candlelit grotto walk across campus to celebrate the Sunday liturgy is beautiful. But on Thursday evening, there is another walk to a new (if forty + years is new) holy site on campus. The conference members gather around Ivan Mestrovic s sculpture Woman at the Well and read the Gospel of John, chapter 4, the story of Jesus and the Samaritan women. Jesus was first recognized as the Savior by this fivetime divorced woman. She was addressed as Jesus addressed his apostles. She recognized and received the living-water from Jesus. Those in the desert appreciate the sweet water of life so much more than those who live in abundance. Jesus love for us is so great that it transcends all our faults. It transforms us when we allow it to do so. His love comes to us in the most unassuming ways. It came to the Samaritan Woman, it does come to us. But the walk to the well or to the grotto helps too. Tell a friend about this conference. Attend yourself and become involved in ministering to the divorced. I have brochures or go to the website: Come to the well and receive the living water. Page 6
