4 Third Sunday of Advent "There is one among you whom you do not recognize." With these words, John the Baptist was referring to his cousin, Jesus. Although Jesus had not yet begun his public ministry, John knew that Jesus was the Messiah. And it was John's mission to prepare other people to recognize that fact. John and Jesus had first "met" in utero when Mary visited Elizabeth. Even from that early moment, John understood the significance of encountering Jesus. The Gospel of Luke tells us that the baby "leaped for joy" in Elizabeth's womb when the expectant Mary approached. Now that these two babies were grown men, John was still in the business of recognizing Jesus' significance. He describes his cousin as "the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie." John knew that Jesus was something special. And he made it his goal to lead others to the same realization. Of course, as Christians in the twenty-first century, we already know that Jesus is the Messiah. But John's words still raise an important question for us today: Do we recognize the real significance of Jesus? Do we take him for granted, or do we appreciate the gift of salvation that he offers us? Today's Gospel reading tells us that John came "to testify to the light." Do we let the light of Christ guide our way? Have we "made straight the way of the Lord" by putting Jesus first in our lives? Today as we light the third candle on the Advent wreath, we would do well to reflect on the true light that came down from heaven. Let us pray, as this holy season continues, that our minds and hearts will be enlightened to grasp the true significance of the coming of Christ. c Joshua Alvarez Margaret Amatulli Doris Aurelio Maria Aurelio Irene Baker Antonio Belmonte Michael Berry Michael Blazevich Laverne Blumka Michael Boston Cheryl Bostrom Robert Boyle Stephany Burney Dorothy Campbell James Campbell Thomas Cak Al Carollo Carol Carollo Janet Cattanach Jacqueline Morrow Christian Frank Coman Vincent Corsello Mike Curtain Margaret Demkovich Lucille Detterline Irene Dettmer Ann DeVoy MaryPat Devoy Irene Dickey Jeanine Doescher Alex Eiland Sherlon Evans John Forde Phyllis Garber Denise Gard Andrea Garritano Margaret Geary Dorothy Giannini Emily Gibson Dorothy Gillespie Shirley Gillespie Jacqueleen Gonzalez Margaret Good Howard Gralewski lease pray for the sick of our parish... 5 The Pastor s Page Next Sunday, December 21st, the Fourth Sunday of Advent, at 6:00 p.m., we will have a service called Lessons and Carols. It is a service, a little over an hour in length, that incorporates both scripture readings as well as Advent Hymns and Christmas Carols. I hope you will take the opportunity to attend. Christmas fast approaches. Use all that is available to prepare yourself spiritually for the wondrous celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Try not to let the secular part of this holiday season take away the spiritual joy that the season holds. Heed the call of the prophets to prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight His paths! TO HELP YOU PREPARE One of the ways to prepare ourselves for the sacred mysteries we celebrate is to cleanse our souls from sin in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This Tuesday, December 16th, we will be offering the sacrament to our school students beginning immediately after our 8:30 a.m. Mass. (Any of the adults in our parish who may want to come at this time instead of driving in the evening are welcome.) Then, in the evening at 7:00 p.m., we will have a Communal Advent Penance Service in the church for our parish community. If you cannot make the confession opportunities this coming Tuesday, you might want to try one of the following. Please note that all times are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted : Our Lady of Grace, Highland 12-16: St. John the Evangelist, St. John (4:00 to 6:00 p.m.) St. Mary, Griffith St. Mary, Crown Point 12-17: St. Michael, Schererville Holy Name, Cedar Lake 12-18: St. Andrew, Merrillville St. Edward, Lowell 12-19: Ss. Peter & Paul, Merrillville (1:00 p.m.) 12-22: Our Lady of Consolation, Merrillville St. James, Highland Your list includes sending cards, baking cookies, wrapping presents. Do not forget to put taking care of my soul on your list of things to do for Christmas. God bless your Advent journey! ADVENT WREATH BLESSING On this Third Sunday of Advent, gather the family together and pray the following prayer: Heavenly Father, we are filled with joy as we continue our preparation for the coming of your Son. Help us to be ready when He arrives. Amen. After the prayer, light two purple candles and the pink candle on your wreath. Then, if you wish, sing together: O come, divine Messiah! The world in silence waits the day When hope shall sing its triumph, And sadness flee away. Dear Savior haste; Come, come to earth, Dispel the night and show your face, And bid us hail the dawn of grace. O come, divine Messiah! The world in silence waits the day When hope shall sing its triumph, And sadness flee away. TAIZÉ PRAYER tonight (Sunday, December 14) at 6:00 p.m. in the church. As the days to Christmas number down faster and faster and we begin to feel the frenzied pace, feel free to join us for this peaceful time with the Lord. Gaudete Sunday Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Christmas was fast approaching and the judge was in the holiday spirit when he asked the defendant, What are you charged with? Doing my Christmas shopping early, replied the defendant. That s no offense, said the judge. It is if you do it before the shops are open, the prosecutor replied.
