4 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time A friend of mine spent many years working for the church. She began her career as a Catholic school teacher. Then, after the Second Vatican Council, and at the suggestion of a parish priest, she went on to become a director of religious education in her parish. Eventually, she was employed by a large diocese and spent time collaborating with one of the auxiliary bishops on diocesan projects. As the priest shortage challenged dioceses, my friend took on the responsibility of running a suburban parish, which is where I met her. When she finally retired years later, she and her husband continued to share the task of directing stewardship efforts in their parish. Throughout her years of service my friend was blessed with great opportunities while facing ministerial challenges as well. The Gospel story of the poor beggar Lazarus was one that she often talked about. She would describe how the words haunted her. In all her work my friend felt that she was so blessed, just like the rich man in the Gospel. While by no means rich, she and her husband had a comfortable existence, four adult children who were all doing reasonably well, a house, and decent health. Any observer would describe them as living the American dream. It was this Gospel about Lazarus that drove my friend to a passion about care for the poor. At just about every opportunity in her ministry she would devise ways to include helping others and to encourage others to do the same: religious education classes included a component of service; prayer services often had intercessions for those in need; activities that drew people from the parish into meal programs and St. Vincent de Paul were promoted. My friend felt that she, like so many others, was the rich man in the Gospel. And that Jesus expected us to take care of Lazarus today. c Coleen Alexander Margaret Amatulli Doris Aurelio Maria Aurelio Irene Baker Cody Baldwin F. 5 THE KNIGHTS OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE I am out of town this weekend attending the annual investiture of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. This year it takes place in Cleveland, Ohio. The new constitution of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre was promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1977, and the Order now enjoys protection under canon law. This constitution clearly sets forth the reasons for its continued existence: The Order relives in a modern manner the spirit and ideal of the Crusades, with the arms of faith, of the apostolate,, and of Christian charity To this end the Order (a) fosters in its members the practice of the Christian life; (b) is zealous for the preservation and spread of the faith in Palestine; (c) champions the defense of the rights of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land, the cradle of the Order. The Equestrian Order has grown tremendously in defense of the Faith during the twentieth century. With a strong allegiance to the papacy, serving it as soldiers of Christ, the members of the Order are linked to the Church in a unique way, carrying with membership in the Order a responsibility of faithful witness, as well as the dignity of being in the service of the papacy. The Order now comprises five classes: Knights of the Collar, a rank established by Pius XII in There are twelve in number; Knights Grand Cross: Commanders with Star, who are also called Grand Officers, an honor given for special merit; Commanders; simply Knights. Female honorees hold the same ranks or classes but are known as Dame or Lady of (rank), depending on the local custom. It is more correct, from a protocol posture, to refer to female members as Dames of (rank); however, local practices have established the customs for each jurisdiction. Finally, unlike some chivalric orders whose membership is open to non-catholics and even the papal orders of knighthood that admit non-catholics and, in some cases, non-christians alike, the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre is reserved solely for practicing Catholics in a state of grace and in communion with Rome. It is precisely that faith that bonds them so closely to the Sovereign Pontiff. The investiture ceremony itself requires the pledge of defense of the Faith with a Profession of Faith, which, of course, only the Catholic faithful could undertake. There are eight new members of the Order from the Diocese of Gary this year. I am one of them. The other seven are David Kapala, Chet Nordyke, Joseph & Joyce Stodola, Stephan Ziemba, Daniel and Mary Lou Zurawski. Please keep us in your prayers this weekend. And know that you will be in mine. Blessings. The Pastor s Page CHANGE IN MASS TIME SATURDAY MORNING This weekend, October 1st and 2nd, our parish is hosting the first annual Ministry Congress for the Diocese of Gary. One of the main functions is the Mass on Saturday morning. Bishop Melczek will be the principal celebrant at a special Mass that is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. rather than our normal 8:30 a.m. Mass. For those of you who usually gather before and after the Mass on the first Saturday of the month, please note that you will not be able to do so in the main church as they will be setting up for Mass beforehand. If you wish to do your monthly devotion for First Saturdays, feel free to use the chapel this Saturday rather than the church. Again, Mass this coming Saturday will be at 9:00 a.m. rather than 8:30 a.m. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEWEST EAGLE SCOUT Last Saturday, September 18th, an Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held for Evan Rouse. He is our parish s newest Eagle Scout. Evan s project was the placing of the statue of St. Thomas Aquinas at the back entrance of the Parish Office as well as the landscaping around it. As I have said so many times, I am truly proud of all our parishioners who have worked so hard to become Eagle Scouts. It is a credit both to themselves as well as to the many volunteers who give of their time to help our scouts achieve this lofty goal. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE The man told his doctor that he wasn't able to do all the things around the house that he used to do. When the examination was complete, he said, "Now, Doc, I can take it. Tell me in plain English what's wrong with me." "Well, in plain English," the doctor replied, "you're just lazy." "Okay, doc," said the man. "Now give me the medical term so I can tell my wife." Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary more than fifty years. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: September 27: Rev. Emil E. Bloch (1990) October 1: Bishop Norbert F. Gaughan (1999) Page 5

6 My Two Cents Thoughts on Stewardship Living Stewardship The sin of the rich man in today s parable was not that he was rich, but that he failed to share his wealth with the beggar at his gate. He knew Lazarus, perhaps walked by him every time he came in or out, but did nothing to relieve his suffering. Is their a Lazarus in our life? What are we doing to help? Share YOUR thoughts at: mytwocents@stm-church.com Holy Name Society Attention All Members! Our Evening of Reflection will take place on Tuesday, September 28th at the Carmelite Shrine. Our retreat leader will be Rev. Bronislaw Socha, OCD (Fr. Bruno). Bruno, with the praying of the Rosary to follow. Benediction will close the evening. Donation is $13.
