4 Our Lord Jesus Christ the King When we were little children, we were given many examples of kings, mostly in fairy tales. These were usually red-robed gentlemen who either ruled with an iron fist or spent most of their time trying to marry off their beautiful daughters. As we grew, we learned of kings who constantly battled neighboring kings for territorial conquests. None of those kings seems to coincide with what we are taught about the greatest one of all, Christ the King. Where others lead by authoritarian rule, our King leads us by serving, and by giving us his greatest treasure, love. How can we now define king any other way? We are nearly to Advent, the time in which we all pause and celebrate the period of waiting for a coming Savior, a king for all the people. Today is the last Sunday of the liturgical calendar, and is the feast of Christ the King. In today's reading, Pilate repeatedly asks Jesus if he is king of the Jews. His answer? "You say I am a king." In the footnotes to the New American Bible, it says that this is a "reluctant affirmative" at best. In other words, Jesus probably felt Pilate would never understand the type of king Jesus was; it was best to answer with a non-answer. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that we, the people of God, share in the royal office of Christ. In his kingship, he draws all of us to him, asking us to reign as he did, in service to others (CCC 786). The people of the time of Jesus' earthly life had heard of a coming king and savior for many generations; their own experience with kings led them to believe their king would be a mighty ruler as well. But this King of Kings, the greatest of all, spoke softly, served others, showed compassion for all, and asked only for love in return. P lease pray for the sick of our parish... 5 The Pastor s Page FORTY HOURS Shrouded in history and mystery, the Roman Catholic practice of Forty Hours devotion goes back several centuries. While much has changed in terms of the rubrics (rules) for this special adoration, much has also remained the same. This devotion gives all Catholics an opportunity to spend some time in adoration of our God as the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on the altar. Beginning today (Sunday, November 22nd) immediately after the Noon Mass, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed and remain on the altar until the end of closing services each evening. The services begin at 7:00 p.m. and will include a prayer service, a talk by our Forty Hours speaker (Fr. Dominic Bertino, pastor of St. Bridget Church in Hobart) and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. On Tuesday evening, November 24th, the evening service will also include our annual Forty Hours Eucharistic Procession around the inside of the church. One of the basic rules governing exposition of the Blessed Sacrament still remains to this day, that the Blessed Sacrament should never be left alone and unattended. There should always be someone in church adoring the Lord. To that end, I ask you to look at your calendar and see if there is any opportunity for you to come to church each day and spend some time in the Lord s presence. Adoration of the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament is a beautiful opportunity to do something that we often do not do: sit quietly and give God a chance to speak to us. So often, our lives are spent in business and noise and clutter and confusion. There is little time given to God as we get pulled in so many different directions. Give God the chance to speak to you. Spend some time in the presence of your best friend. Let the silence envelop you. Join in the communal celebration each evening to sing your praises to God. Let God know that He is first and foremost in your life. Exposition will begin each day after the last Mass. On Sunday, it will begin after the Noon Mass. On Monday and Tuesday, it will begin after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. I hope to see you there sometime throughout each day. As you take time out of your busy days to give some time back to God, I pray that He reward you for your faithfulness and love. For those of you who are too busy to take this time, I encourage you to find some time in your day to spend a little time in prayer at home, at the office, wherever you find yourself. God bless you! ARE YOU READY FOR THIS? ADVENT IS COMING. Next Sunday, November 29th, is the First Sunday of Advent. As you know, Advent is that special season given to us to prepare for the proper celebration of Christmas. For most of us, Christmas preparation means cleaning houses, baking holiday cookies, making holiday sweets, addressing Christmas cards, and the like. But our primary preparation should be of a spiritual nature. One of the ways we prepare ourselves for the celebration of Christmas is through the use of an Advent wreath. You can purchase an Advent wreath at a local religious articles store or you can make your own. Each week in Advent, I will include a brief prayer service that can be done at home for the lighting of each candle in the passing of the weeks. Get ready to make the season holy so that your Christmas this year may be even holier than last year. 6 Respect Life Corner Let s Not Be Fooled Yes, the Health Care Bill so far proposed sounds good and more fair than originally. BUT that there will not be coverage for abortion can be misleading, because it is not said that there will not be coverage for abortion providers. If such facilities provide other services, such as contraception, (to young girls?), could not a few abortions be tucked in there? And do we want contraception provided to young girls, rather than encouraging abstinence and modesty? Contact Senator Richard Lugar, our Senator, and urge him to include strong anti-abortion measures in the Senate version of the health care bill coming before them soon! senator_lugar@lugar.senate.gov Or also (Merrillville) Little Library Feel free to take and keep newsletters that we leave for you at the Little Library, in the chapel vestibule. 8 My Two Cents Thoughts on Stewardship of Treasure It seems odd, even contradictory, but Jesus says it clearly: The more we give, the more we receive. Only when we share, do blessings come our way.
