The leaves are finally turning color and the moon is huge. I could have read the newspaper to the moon light when I went to work this morning. October is a big family month. Fall sports are wrapping up, Halloween and winter sports are gearing up. Many of you are probably getting tired of the s asking for volunteers for UNL football concessions. This year has been especially challenging which leads me to wonder why. You guys have done a wonderful job of recruiting new members, so I know it s not because we don t have enough members. As I reviewed the growth in our council, I realize that we are getting younger as a council. Our average age is 54 which was much lower than it was just a few years ago. Of our 313 members, 135 of you are below the age of 50 which is prime family age. We all know how busy it is to raise a family. Weekends are especially busy. If you think back to your 1 st Degree ceremony, Charity is the first pillar of the Knights. We also believe Charity begins at home is also addressed in the ceremony. So, when there is a conflict of family versus Knights activities, family is always first! We may start focusing more on events that involve on family participation. The fish frys are a good example of a family event. For 19 years, our council has volunteered to work concessions at UNL home football games. At every home football game, our council is asked to provide 20 volunteers to help in two pop stands (8 volunteers each) and a 4-person concession stand. Volunteers must be 14 years old or older to participate. Given the changes in our council s demographics, I suggest we reduce our involvement to one 8-person pop stand and the 4-person concession stand next year. I am confident this matches our demographics better. This will affect our charitable giving by about 5%, which is minimal. Prayer is the long-range solution. Monetary help is just temporary. Please give the proposal some thought. We will discuss this at the monthly meetings before making a final decision. Our fall activities are in full swing. We have at least one event every weekend in October is not two. It slows down a little in November. Please view the newsletter calendar for the upcoming events. Our website also has a council calendar that Brother Knights Adam Miller keeps up to date. Thanks to BK Eric Korth, we now have a Facebook page We plan to post future activities and pictures of past events. Please let me know if you like to take pictures. Our council needs a photographer to snap a few pictures at our events. Please let me know if you are interested. Every one of us knows a Catholic family we can invite to join our family. Please take the time to invite them to join. Being a Knight is a lifetime commitment, one that they will never regret. Please save the date for our council s banquet on Thursday May 16 th, We will be celebrating our 25 th (Silver) anniversary. The night will be filled with activities, good food and prayer. I m looking forward to seeing you all there. As a last note, please attend the Eucharistic Procession around the Capitol on November 3:00pm. This is a fantastic family event. It would be extremely helpful if each Knight could help for a couple of hours on two separate Saturdays between the 1st of April and the 1st of December. Approximately 10 Knights are needed after the 8:15am Mass, about 9:00am Please check the weekly church bulletin for the Mow Schedule to determine if you are on the list. If you can not make it on Saturday morning, please consider volunteering during the week (day or evening), or switch with another Knight. 4 Insurance Report Roth IRAs: A Less Taxing Way to Save Did you know that you can establish a Roth IRA through the Knights of Columbus? If you haven't set up a Roth IRA for this year, there's still time to take advantage of this great way to save for retirement. You can now save up to $3,000 per year, minus the amounts contributed to other IRAs. The limit is $3,500 for people over 50. The total you can contribute also depends on your income, but you can do so regardless of whether you participate in a pension plan. Although your contributions aren't deductible, the long-range benefits of a Roth IRA should be compared to those of a traditional IRA. For starters, many people earn too much for a traditional IRA to be a tax deduction. And with a Roth IRA you avoid the age-70 1/2 minimum distribution requirements that come with a traditional IRA. You can establish a Roth IRA, and make your yearly contribution, up to the date you file your tax return for that year (excluding extensions). But annual contributions to a Roth IRA aren't required. All interest you earn is federal income tax-free, provided you withdraw your funds under certain "qualified distribution" rules. If you'd like more information about Roth IRAs - or traditional IRAs - I can help. But do it soon. 7 Supreme Knight Calls for Reform, and IN AN AUG. 21 LETTER addressed to all council chaplains, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson asked for a novena of Masses to be offered in reparation for sins committed by clergy following new revelations of sexual abuse, and for the healing of victims. The issues that have come to light concerning sexual abuse by Archbishop Theodore McCarrick and in the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report are cause for grave concern, the supreme knight wrote, noting the sense of betrayal felt by so many Catholics. We must commit the Knights of Columbus to work for repentance, reform and rebuilding of the Church. In addition to a number of urgent, concrete reforms including a full investigation of sexual abuse led by an in- dependent commission that includes laity; complete transparency by the Catholic hierarchy into all matters of criminal sexual misconduct past or future; and an independent ethics hotline for reporting of criminal and other conduct at odds with Catholic teaching on the clerical state of life the supreme knight called on the Order to take up the spiritual arms of reparation. Knights of Columbus will help renew our Church on a national level through a Novena of Masses in reparation for these sins that have so grievously wounded the Body of Christ, he wrote. 8 ODDS & ENDS OR A LITTLE OF THIS AND A LITTLE OF THAT As a reminder, when requesting mass announcements, please submit your requests to the parish office by Saturday at 11 am. COUNCIL #11280 APPAREL We have a 100% cotton polo that is comfortable to wear. We also have a twill, button front shirt, in short and long sleeve that looks a bit more dressy. We have two nice jackets, one with a hood, that are warm in winter and very nice looking. All of the clothing has the KofC logo & council name on them. You can print out the order form from the council website or you can get one at the next monthly meeting and try on samples. Hats are on sale at all monthly meetings. If you have any questions contact LeRoy Novak at This council serves St Johns. We are very blessed to have many dedicated groups supporting St Johns. All of the groups work together to serve our Lord Jesus Christ s church. We are very fortunate to help the Altar Society with their annual brunch, Craft Show, Garage sale, Mothers Day We financially support WYD pilgrims that volunteer for pancake breakfasts, fish frys and fireworks stand. The Altar Society helps with our fish frys, soup supper & fireworks stand. Pius students help us with our concession stands, fish frys & fireworks stand. This is just to name a few. There are many more examples of all of us working together to serve Jesus Christ. This is a prayerful council. All of our meetings start and end with a pray. We pray for our priests and religious and ask God for good and holy religious at every monthly council meeting. We also have a 24 hour prayer vigil 4 times a year. Our members receive daily prayer requests from Brother Knights in Nebraska. I am sure most of the Knights in our council say a pray for those mentioned in the . Pray is very powerful & God is good! Announcements Rosary for Seminarians 7:00pm every Thursday at St. John s, in the Cry Room. Everyone is welcome and invited to come pray for our seminarians. Lord, send workers to your harvest.

9 Our Seminarians Prayer List Let us pray for seminarians, that they may listen to the voice of the Lord and follow it with courage and joy, Pope Francis. This month we ask you to pray for all seminarians, novices, and postulants. Keep in prayer all those that are doubting their vocation because of the current scandals in our Church.
