Thank you to all the volunteers who donated their time, talents and treasures on Easter morning to prepare and feed approximately 140 needy people. This was possible due to the success of our 2017 Mega Bingo. Our council donated $500 to the soup kitchen in order to host this dinner. Also, thanks to all that donated food cards, including our Ladies Auxiliary, who donated $ in food cards. These cards were given out to the needy. This is one of the events that the needy look forward to every year. On April 18 th our council hosted a Pizza Party for Special Olympics of Las Cruces. We had approximately 40 Special Olympic Athletes in attendance. In total there were approximately 120 in attendance. Thank you to Father Rogelio for the opening prayer, the three athletes who led us with the pledge of allegiance, singing of the national anthem and the Special Olympics Oath. Brother Alberto Grijalva, co-chairman of our Special Olympics program, made the presentation of a $750 donation. Each athlete was given the opportunity to mention their name and what sporting events they participate in. It was a joy to see these individuals with the spirit they hold in their hearts. They are a gift from God. I believe this was the largest crowd at a Family Unity Night ever. What a success!!!! 2 COMMUNITY/COUNCIL El Caldito Easter Dinner April 1, 2018: For many years, our council has volunteered to cook and serve a special Easter Sunday Dinner at the El Caldito Soup Kitchen. It is always a good time for those of us who work at that event we experience a joyous satisfaction. It is a good time for those who are eating they enjoy a special dinner, and receive some nice prizes. The menu always features delicious brisket, which is always a treat at the Soup Kitchen. We also hold a continuous raffle, where we give away fast food gift cards that are donated by merchants, Brother Knights, and our Ladies Auxiliary. This year, we gave away 25 - $10 PicQuik cards, 20 - $10 WalMart cards, and 10 - $10 McDonald s cards. We served about 140 dinners, so many who were there received a gift card! We had about 15 to 20 volunteers at both the morning and afternoon shifts and the event went smoothly. This is exactly the kind of charity upon which our Knights of Columbus brotherhood is based. If you couldn t make it this year, remember us for next year. AS USUAL, THANKS FOR YOUR HAPPY, GENEROUS, AND BROTHERLY HELP! 3 SPECIAL OLYMPICS/COUNCIL Family Unity Night Pizza Party for Special Olympics: We make an annual contribution of $750 to the local Las Cruces Special Olympics Group from our annual Mega Bingo proceeds. This helps to pay the costs of preparing the Olympians for their competitions and their travel expenses when they compete out of town. We always invite the Special Olympians, their families, and the volunteers who work with them to one of our monthly Family Unity Nights. We provide the group with a pizza party, present them with their check, and the Olympians tell us about themselves, and the joy they receive from their Special Olympics Program. This is the 3 rd consecutive year that we have sponsored this event. It has grown from a turnout of about 50 in 2016 to over 120 this year! It is a fun night and it is a moving night, and a night that our council and ladies auxiliary is proud of. GK Jaime Flores welcomed Special Olympics Fr Rogelio led all in prayer. 4 Fun Fishing Day April 29, 2018: This year, we are sponsoring a new event..a Fun Fishing Day for boys and girls from 5 to 14. The idea was proposed by Brother Luis Garcia and embraced enthusiastically by our Youth Director, Bro Joaquin Silva. With a lot of help from a Working Group of Knights and Ladies, an event has been prepared for Sunday, April 29. Some of the photos below show how much fun our children have with the fishing booth at the Fiesta Sunday will be the real thing! The poster below was designed by Brother Daniel Chavez, and has been displayed at many businesses and meeting places all over town! SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS Our regular 3 rd Tuesday of the month Entry (1 st ) Degree Exemplification has special importance this month. We are preparing candidates from our Membership Drive for their Initiation as Knights. The Exemplification is scheduled for Tuesday May 15 th at 7 PM in the Parish Hall. For input on future Exemplifications, please go to or The NM State Convention will be held on May 3-6 in Albuquerque. Our Council will be represented by GK Jaime Flores and PGK Jesus Frietze. Please go to the state website for more information. Don t forget that our Mothers Day Dance is scheduled for Saturday May 12 th in the Parish Hall. Please tell your family and friends! See the article on page 6 of this newsletter. The 2018 Las Cruces Youth Rally will be held on June 2-3. We have been asked to help with procession safety and providing transportation for invited speakers. Our council also made a $500 donation from our Mega Bingo proceeds. We held a Membership Drive after all the Masses on April Approximately 10 men indicated an interest in joining the Knights of Columbus. They are now being contacted for interviews. Thanks to all the Brothers who helped in that drive. Council jackets are now being ordered. The price is $50 and $55 for larger sizes. If you are interested in ordering a jacket, please contact Ruben Salcido. Vests are available in a variety of sizes for $30. Contact Brother Jaime Rivera for a vest. Brother Cruz was the second Grand Knight at St. Genevieve s. He is still a member of our council, but has been somewhat inactive because his major work has been out of town. He is back in Las Cruces, and hopes to be more active in our council soon. Welcome back, Cruz! A big wave to all his old friends 2 of our 5 Past Grand Knights 4

5 INSURANCE AGENT S MESSAGE May Is Disability Awareness Month While jobs may be safer in 2018, accidents, injuries, and illnesses that can impact your ability to work still happen. Most, in fact, do not happen on the jobsite or place of employment. Did you know that a 2011 study revealed that more than 95 percent of the long-term disability claims on file were not work related? The Knights have always sought to protect members families from the loss of a breadwinner. I m sure you know all about Father McGivney s vision for our insurance program - but you may not know that Father McGivney also wanted to find a way to help members who couldn t work because of an illness. After all, the loss of the breadwinner does not have to mean that person s death; it can also mean the loss of the breadwinner s income. Consider that loss for a moment. How would your family fare if a source of income suddenly stopped? Could a dual-income family manage on one income? What about young families with a working father and a mother who cares for the children? What if his income halted due to an accident or illness? I ve heard some people say they have coverage at work, but too many aren t sure what this coverage entails, how much income it would provide or for how long. Having this protection counts for something, certainly, but it isn t yours ; it s provided by the company for which you work at their discretion. It could be eliminated tomorrow. That s where a personally-owned disability income insurance product, like Income Armor, comes into play. It can offer valuable income replacement in the event of an injury or illness. Thank you to our newest Brother Luis Garcia for coming up with the idea. A committee consisting of Brothers Joaquin Silva, Bill Klement, Jose Tapia and Alberto Grijalva were able to organize a very successful event. Thank you to all the Brothers, Ladies and Youth who volunteered their time and talents in fishing. A special thanks to our Whale sponsor-sportsman s Warehouse, NM State Game & Fish, NMSU American Fisheries Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters, our Ladies Auxiliary, Brothers and all local businesses who made a monetary donation to purchase food and prizes. There were approximately 75 youths who participated. Our Mother s Day Dinner & Dance is around the corner on May 12 th. Our committee has been working very hard putting together a very enjoyable evening for all mothers. Please purchase your tickets as soon as possible, as we need to get a good count to the caterer for the food. We will be having our Fraternal Officers elections on May 9 th at our council meeting. I encourage all Brothers to please consider running for an officer position. 7 Mothers Day Dance Saturday, May 12th We are planning to hold our Annual Spring Dance the day before Mother s Day this year. A Working Group of the St. Genevieve Ladies Auxilliary, and Brothers Jesus Frietze, Jaime Flores, Bill Klement, Art Padilla, Robert Ponzini, Ruben Salcido, and Jose Tapia have been working long and to prepare a wonderful evening for the Catholic Community. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring your Mother to enjoy an evening out. We will have entertainment and dancing and an elegant roast beef dinner. There will be free prizes for the ladies, and a 50/50 raffle with a chance to win cash. It is truly a bargain.
