GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE This is the 2 nd month of the year and we have the following taking place: Presentation of the Lord on February 2 nd ; Valentine Day and Mass on February 14 at the Cathedral; President s Day on the 16 th ; and of course Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent on the 18 th. All these events have the Lord s presence throughout and it doesn t have to be a Mass, rosary or vigil to be considered religious. When the President (or any elected official) takes an oath of office, they place their hand on a Bible. This brings God s presence into the event. When we pledge allegiance to our flag we declare one nation under God (K of C, 1954). So God s presence is throughout any event or action. I want to congratulate Gilbert and Mary Lou Perez for their 55 th anniversary and for being an example of devotion and caring. I also congratulate my Brother Knights who are married and will celebrate an anniversary this year. Your love and devotion to your partner is an example to be cherished. Thank you Brother Knights and Ladies for keeping Lady Toni in your prayer and the result has been that she is off dialysis! 2 LIFE/CHURCH/COMMUNITY SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE SUNDAY JAN 18 On Sunday, January 18, the knights were significant leaders in the Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. The events started at Saint Genevieve s at 1:00 pm for a Holy Hour led by Father Rogelio. Brother Knights gave tribute to the Holy Eucharist during adoration. Following the Holy Hour, St. Genevieve Knights led the 200 people who walked to Young Park. At Young Park there was a rally to voice our support for the sanctity and dignity of human life, from conception to natural death. The rally included talks by several pro-life leaders. Coming in February: The next 40-days for life campaign will begin on Ash Wednesday February 18 th and run through lent. We are asking that all knights from Council participate by standing in front of Dion s on Lohman to protest the Whole Woman s Health Abortion Facility that is located directly behind Dion s. 3 CHURCH/FAMILY/YOUTH PROFILE OF A PARISH FAMILY Jonathan Eric Villa is the son of Brother Chris and Terri Villa, and is an older brother of Squire Jacob Villa. Jon is active at St. Genevieve Parish, serving as an altar server. He is a 2014 graduate of Gadsden High School and is currently attending his first semester at NMSU where he is studying Criminal Justice. While in high school, Jon enlisted in the U.S. Army. After completing his Junior Year at Gadsden High, Jon went to Basic Combat Training (also known as boot camp ) at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He entered boot camp with the rank of PV2, on August 1, During his ten weeks of training, he completed an ambitious program of classroom study, practical instruction, and performance of military exercises. His classroom studies covered the areas of Army history and missions, Army tradition and core values, military weapons, chemical warfare, map Proud Dad Bro Chris Villa with Son Jon 1 reading, and field tactics. The training programs included physical fitness, basic combat skills, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, and basic first aid. Jon also participated in actual field exercises including marching and drill ceremony, field training, and foot marches. Villa was awarded the Army Achievement Medal for exceptional performance and mastery of marksmanship fundamentals. Upon graduation, he was promoted to the rank of Private First Class. After graduation from high school, Jon began his Advanced Individual Training Program. AIT was completed on November 5, 2014 and he graduated from the United States Army Quartermaster School with class Sierra at Fort Lee, Virginia. Upon returning from Advanced Individual Training, Villa was promoted to the rank of Specialist. He is currently serving in the Army Reserves and is assigned to the 263rd Quartermaster Company in El Paso, Texas. 3

4 CHURCH/FAMILY - FAMILY UNITY NIGHT 3-Star Council Award at Clovis Awards are presented at FUN Bro Flores & Quichocho Family Immediate Past State Deputy, Peter Quichocho, was present at our 21 January Family Unity Night to formally present awards for exemplary performance during the fraternal year. FGK Kerry Morley accepted the awards. The 1st award was the new Triple Star Council, awarded to councils that: (1) satisfy the requirements for the Columbian (Programs), Fr. McGivney (Membership), and Founder s (Insurance Membership) Awards and (2) exceed their membership quota by at least 300%. In the first year of this award, it has gone to only about 75 councils on the American Continents. The 2nd award was the prestigious Contest of Champions Membership Award. Our Council had the highest membership growth in New Mexico over the past (fraternal) year. These awards are a tribute to many hard-working Brothers, including Al Lopez (Membership Director), Kerry Morley (GK ), Jesus Frietze, Andres Garcia, Jaime Flores, Lucio Tellez, Alberto Grijalva, and many others. Finally, as the former District Deputy, Jesus Frietze accepted an award for Star District. All of these awards are a tribute to the legacy of St. Genevieve s Council There was also a presentation by GK Jesus Frietze of donations of $500 each to United in Ministries and St. Vincent de Paul. These donations were made possible by proceeds from our recent Mega Bingo fundraiser. At the end of the evening, all those present enjoyed our usual monthly potluck family dinner! Contribution to St. Vincent s Fr. Rogelio accepts UIM Award Potluck dinner was enjoyed by all YOUTH STATUS OF JOHN PAUL II SQUIRES CIRCLE As of January 6, we have 12 Squires that have been initiated into our St. John Paul II Squires Circle. They were initiated in three different groups: (1) Sept 2014: Victor Montoya, Jacob Villa, Michael Chavez, Ramon Chavez and Emilio Garcia. (2) 7 October 2014: Brandon Thomas, Devin Schroeder, Kurt Parrent and Jesse Parrent. (3) 6 January 2015: Matthew Ortiz, Alexis Dorado, and Devon Mintz. Counselors Jaime Flores and Kerry Morley are still recruiting new members, and plan another initiation. GENEVIEVE YOUTH HELP DECORATE THEIR CHURCH Brother Al Lopez was a part of the group of parishioners who donated their time to help decorate the Church for Christmas. It was a big job, including the assembly of a large Manger Scene. There were about six loyal, hard-working teens who assisted. The Church looked extremely beautiful at Christmas, due to their hard work. We are grateful to have these young people! 6 MEMBERSHIP - FIRST DEGREE INITIATION We initiated candidates from Basilica de San Albino Council#15550 in Mesilla at our First Degree Initiation on 20 January. This month we welcomed candidates Richard Melendrez and Jay O Neill into the Order. Our old friend Brother Jimmy Beesley, the Deputy Grand Knight of Council 15550, accompanied them. As usual, our loyal Insurance Agent, Brother Matt Seltzer, attended the initiation. FR RICARDO IN CLOVIS We occasionally receive messages from our former pastor, Fr. Ricardo Bauza. Fr. Ricardo was assigned last year to a parish in Hobbs, NM and was replaced by Fr. Rogelio. Both of our most recent pastors were born in Mexico and were ordained at the same time. Fr Ricardo recently informed us that it was 12 degrees and snowing in Hobbs. He sent us a picture frolicking in the snow with his dog, Aida. Council DGK Jim Beesley & GK Jesus welcome the new Brother Knights MEMBERSHIP DRIVE on JAN 24 CHURCH/FAMILY Knights of the Month At the Family Unity Night on January 21, GK Jesus Frietze named three Brother Knights as Knights of the Month: Brother Al Lopez (October 2014), Brother Robert Ponzini (November 2014), and Brother Sal Estrada (December 2014). Each Brother selected has done an outstanding job in an area of service to the Knights of Columbus and to the community. Our congratulations go out to these Brothers. Other Brother Knights, for July, August, September and January will be recognized in February Bro Jesus Gonzalez Bro Robert Ponzini explaining and his son Jesus our video to Thomas Intorcio Our New Membership Drive, on Sunday 25 January, was enjoyed by all. Many Brothers, like Bro Jesus Gonzalez, dropped by to say hello and share a sweetroll with the crowd. Others, like Bro Tom Intorcio, were interested in learning more about our Council. 7 Special Message from our Worthy Insurance Agent, Matthew Seltzer As we end 2014 and begin 2015, I want to thank each of you that I ve been able to meet this past year or personally visit with. One of the best parts of my role in the Knights of Columbus is seeing the variety of activities across Southwest New Mexico in the 15 councils I serve. It s inspiring to see the good work going on in our area, and to be a small part of those efforts. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve you, helping to secure your futures in your respective families. I look forward to continuing to keep Fr. McGivney s promise to all of our members in the coming year.
