2 To My Brother Knights: Grand Knight's Report As we start our fraternal year. I want to thank you my brothers for your support, inspiration and the brotherly love that you have given me. I am thrilled about our leadership team of officers and directors for this year. I m humbled and honored to serve as your Grand Knight this year. Our goal is the first principle of our beloved Order which is charity. As we know this principle is put into practice at every level of the Order. Yet, the charity we practice is nothing other than the love of Christ poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. The second we want to accomplish is unity. Our Catholic faith teaches us to Love thy neighbor as thyself. Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day. None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that together we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. So we need to stick together and support one another. That doesn t mean that we always agree or that there is never a difference of opinion. It does mean that as a Knight of Columbus, you can count on the support and encouragement of your brother Knights as you work to make life better in your parish and community. The third goal is to increase membership to convey the sense of excitement and pride when talking about the great things our council accomplishes and the people who are being helped and how volunteering has helped us grow in our faith and what being a Knight means to you. My overall approach this year is to improve our communication and to push responsibility throughout the membership. I want to continue creating enthusiasm and excitement about what we are doing and what we all can do together. I want to foster a sense of urgency about the needs of the church and community. And to improve communication, support fraternity and to foster extended member involvement. In conjunction with this goal, we also have a goal to improve our public relations to the parish and the community. Let s make the love of God visible. We want to be the best council and being proud of it through generosity through God s Guidance. The Knights of Columbus is all about fraternity and brotherly love. The Knights of Columbus stands with the church and our mission is to help the church make the love of God visible in the world. We are our brother s keeper. So, in conclusion my Brother Knights, If President John F. Kennedy were here tonight, perhaps he would say something like: Ask not what your council can do for you----ask what you can do for your Council. My Brother Knights of the world, ask not what the Knights of Columbus will do for you, but what together we can do for mankind. God Bless the Knights of Columbus. Your Brother in Christ Cesar Mascardo Grand Knight, Council 7027 Page 2

3 Brother Knights, Field Agent's Report A Founding Notion: Protecting the Breadwinner s Income While jobs may be safer in 2016, accidents, injuries, and illnesses that can impact your ability to work still happen. Most, in fact, do not happen on the jobsite or place of employment. Did you know that a 2011 study revealed that more than 95 percent of the long-term disability claims on file were not work related? The Knights have always sought to protect members families from the loss of a breadwinner. I m sure you know all about Father McGivney s vision for our insurance program. But you may not know that Father McGivney also wanted to find a way to help members who couldn t work because of an illness. After all, the loss of the breadwinner does not have to mean that person s death; it can also mean the loss of the breadwinner s income. Consider that loss for a moment. How would your family fare if a source of income suddenly stopped? Could a dual-income family manage on one income? What about young families with a working father and a mother who cares for the children? What if his income halted due to an accident or illness? I ve heard some people say they have coverage at work, but too many aren t sure what this coverage entails, how much income it would provide or for how long. Having this protection counts for something, certainly, but it isn t yours ; it s provided by the company for which you work at their discretion. It could be eliminated tomorrow. That s where a personally-owned disability income insurance product, like Income Armor, comes into play. It can offer valuable income replacement in the event of an injury or illness. If you have a job, you must know about this coverage. May God Bless You All, Jeff Fischer, FICF, LUTCF K of C Field Agent jeff.fischer@kofc.org Page 3

4 Deacon s Teaching By Deacon Chris Christopher What Does the Church Teach About the Death Penalty? Was God s ancient commandment You shall not kill (Ex 20:13) understood as an absolute statement, forbidding any taking of human life? Apparently not, since the same divine law called for the death penalty (Lv 20:2-21, 27). For this reason, the Catholic Church reads the commandment against killing in light of other biblical passages that specify it meaning: The innocent and the just you shall not put to death, nor shall you acquit the guilty (Ex 23:7). The commandment thus forbids the taking of innocent life; execution of criminals may be another matter. Of course, Christians are not obliged to practice all of the Old Testament laws (Gal 3:23-25). Nor, when the contemporary state punishes crimes censured in the Old Testament, must we demand that it impose as severe a penalty as God required of the ancient Israelites (Jn 7:53-8:11). Nevertheless, the Church has traditionally allowed for the possibility of capital punishment for extremely serious crimes. Why? Because societies may legitimately defend themselves just as individuals may and the defense of the common good depends upon rendering an unjust aggressor incapable of harming others. In fact, such a defense may be not only a right but also even a grave duty for public officials who are responsible to protect the lives of others (Rom 13:3-4). Must the aggressor be put to death in order to be rendered incapable of harm? The Catechism (#2267 with emphasis added) explains: Assuming that the guilty party s identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible ay of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor. If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people s safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity with the dignity of the human person. Today, in fact, the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity are very rare, if not practically non-existent (John Paul II, Evangelium vitae 56). Next month we ll ask, Why Is Contraception Wrong? Page 4

6 Pro-Life by Dan Arndt We need to Protest!! Our voices have to be heard!! This is ridiculous, inhuman, and downright STUPID!! It isn't enough that abortion is legal, but now the women who abort are in danger. The US Supreme Court voted 5-3 against a Texas law that protected women from abortion facilities that put profit above patient safety. The law required abortion facilities to meet common sense health and safety standards as other ambulatory surgical centers. Standards like adequate staffing, soap dispensers, and other basic sanitary conditions. It also required abortion doctor to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. A similar law is just about to start in Florida on July 1st. Not sure how this will affect Florida law, but regardless we need to step up and contact any and all officials as possible. We can't keep letting them get away with this. July 9 Ernie Cyr w ith the Coalition for Life w ill have a planning meeting at St Rose to plan for the Emerald Coast Walk for Life sometime in January. Please try to attend. Transportation Providers Thanks to Allen Pegg for providing this information to the newsletter: For our elderly, handicapped, sick, or distressed brothers and their families that are in need of transportation, e.g., doctor appointments, pharmacy, etc., they should contact the Santa Rosa County Community Transportation Coordinator at Eagle Scout Hank Raymond Hard, June 7, 2016 Hank Hard, a member of Boy Scout Troop 427, earned the Eagle Scout rank during a June 7 ceremony. For his Eagle project, Hank built a picnic table, benches and a fire ring at the Yellow River State Park on behalf of the Northwest Florida Trail Association. The Milton High School graduate was a four-year member of the Mighty Black and Gold Band. His involvement in scouting began in 2003, when he joined Cub Scouts in the first grade. He said the highlight of his Cub Scout experience was winning the Pinewood Derby. Hank s Eagle honor follows several years of camping trips, weeklong winter and summer camps, earning merit badges and working with his troop on community projects.
