Yes it s January and we start off with Saturday rosary at 10:00 am on January 2, After that we follow with the feast of Epiphany. In addition we have January 18 as the day we observe the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. It s important to note the significance of a strong civil rights leader as he effected change through peaceful disobedience. This requires determination and focus of goals. As we continue in January, let us keep in mind that the New Mexico Legislature meets on January 19, for a 60 day session. Write to your state representative or senator and state your concern about abortion clinics in New Mexico; it is through our voice that change comes about. Matthew Seltzer (575) matthew.seltzer@kofc.com matthewseltzer.com CULTURE OF LIFE / YOUTH Report of Culture of Life Director Harold Beeson: Knights must be the Voice for the Voiceless 2015 was a year that saw two active abortion facilities that are open in our City and in Santa Teresa continue the killing of innocent babies who have no voice in this evil which goes on daily. These offences cry out to God for justice, and we as Knights of St. Genevieve s council are called to make sure that the voices of the innocent and suffering are heard. But thanks be to God that we have responded. The Knights have brought to the forefront life when we took part in 40-days for life and stood shoulder to shoulder with people of good will to decry abortion. We also supported the training of sidewalk counselors that are on the front lines at the abortion facilities to talk to women; a ministry that this spring resulted in 5 couples turning away from abortion. We also stood guard during holy hours and pro-life marches as an example of our first creed of charity. Clearly we still have our work cut out for us, which is why Father Stephen Imbarrato states that we must be working 24 hours a day 7 days a week to end abortion. That is why we cannot stop giving our voice to the voiceless unborn love and justice demand it. That is why we must stand for the dignity of every human life from conception to natural death. That is why it is so important that we support the upcoming events in So please stay attuned to announcements of activities that celebrate the life and dignity of every human person born and unborn. We as Knights must raise our voice in prayer since infinite is the power of our almighty God who working through his people here on earth and with Mary and the Saints in heaven can bring an end to abortion so that every child is a blessing. PWID/Special Olympics Report from Brother Alberto Grijalva Brother Alberto continues as our main contact with the disabled community and the Special Olympics activities in the Las Cruces area. He spends much of his time working with TRESCO and volunteering at the Munson Senior Center in Las Cruces. The Special Olympics participants continue to practice bowling and basketball at the local facilities, 10 Pin Bowling Alley and at the NMSU basketball courts. After the New Year, Brother Alberto will be in contact with the local volunteers for the New Mexico State Special Olympics to plan next years contributions of money and time. 2

3 CHURCH/COUNCIL/COMMUNITY/FAMILY Light Up for Christ Ceremony: Recently, there have been national news reports that the tradition of honoring the birth of Jesus by saying or displaying the word Christmas is being pushed from the public square. The battle for Christmas is not new to the Knights of Columbus, which has publicly promoted the true meaning of Christmas for more than 30 years through its multi-faceted Keep Christ in Christmas program. The Order s public service Christmas announcements have reached more than 20 million television viewers and about 27 million radio listeners since they began airing in the 1980s. Throughout America, many Councils honor the birth of Jesus by illuminating and blessing a Christmas tree or Nativity scene on the first Tuesday of December as part of the Order s Light Up for Christ campaign, launched in On Friday, December 1, our Council #13969 sponsored a Light up for Christ ceremony at St. Genevieve s. Deacon Lou Roman was the minister, and led the prayer and readings. Brother Ruben Corona and his wife Sylvia led the singing, with a small choir of lead singers and the congregation joining in. After the ceremony, the Ladies Auxiliary served hot drinks and snacks that they had prepared. Light Up For Christ was a big success, with over 50 parishioners participating. 4 COUNCIL/COMMUNITY/MEMBERSHIP The New Mexico State Knights of Columbus Mid-Year Meeting: As reported by State Deputy Richard Espinosa, feedback from the attendees of the Mid-Year Meeting was very positive. Some of the comments heard included, food was great, Ladies Luncheon was fantastic, the Confirmation students were wonderful servers, and the Banquet was enjoyable. State Deputy Espinosa thanked our neighboring councils for their support because, where two or more councils are gathered, great things happen Many of our St. Genevieve s Council members attended the meeting. Brothers Gilbert Perez, Richard Archuleta, Kerry Morley and Jim Glasscock attended as State Representatives. Our council delegates were Jesus Frietze, Al Lopez and Jaime Flores. The main working sessions were held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral. Because of the proximity of the activities, other Brothers from our council were also able to attend. We sponsored the Parish Posada on Wednesday, December 16 th. Our volunteers prepared for the ceremony and filled the piñatas for the children. The Council donated the finger-foods and the Ladies Auxilliary served the snacks. Church Director Dave Kenny coordinated with the Church and the Ladies Auxilliary to assure that the event went smoothly. The Posadas are a tradition at St. Genevieve s. The evenings commemorate the journey of Mary and Joseph to the humble manger in Bethlehem where our Savior was born. At the posada our parishioners pray, sing, and break bread together. At the end of the evening, the children break the piñatas and gather the candies. POTPOURRI (Who says that this isn t a high-class newsletter!) Remember Starting on Wednesday, January 13 th, the Officers Meeting will start at 6 PM, just before the Council Meeting at 7 PM. Visit our website for daily, up-to-the-minute information.
