Lots of good things are happening. On August 16 th 18 th Brothers Jaime Rivera, Luis Garcia and I completed the Acts Retreat. It was a great experience to engage in my faith and with the Lord. I encourage all the Brothers to someday sign up for this retreat. You will not regret it. I would like to welcome our newest member Nickolas Cano to our council. Thanks to Brother Al Lopez for sponsoring and being at the Admission Degree on August 21 st to support this special Brother. A special congratulations goes out to two of our Ladies from our Ladies Auxiliary. Lady Rebecca Archuleta is the newly elected Regent and Lady Cecilia Flores is the newly elected Financial Secretary for the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Santa Cruz #1298. Please keep them in your prayers. Our council is there to support them and the Court. Our 2018 St Genevieve Fiesta will be on September 8 th 9 th. We are asking the Brothers, Ladies and family members to spare a few hours helping out at the fiesta. It would be greatly appreciated. 2 INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS FOR FRATERNAL YR WEDS AUGUST 15 TH : The Installation of Officers took place on Wednesday August 15 th, at 7:30 PM at the St. Genevieve Parish Hall. August 15 is the Feast of The Assumption of Mary, and is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Installation occurred immediately after the 6 PM Mass, which many of the Brothers and their families attended. District Deputy Kerry Morley conducted the ceremony; he is also a member of our Board of Trustees and was installed himself. Deacon Lou Roman acted as Chaplain, and led us in prayer. We are looking forward to an active year of growth with a dynamic group of officers! 3 FAMILY UNITY NIGHT MUSIC IN THE PARK SUNDAY AUG 5th: As last year, we again had a late-summer Family Unity Night joining Music in the Park at Young Park. This year the band was Remember Then, featuring oldies music with soul, shine, rock, folk and country music. (Does anyone know what shine music is?). The Music in the Park socials are always a time to enjoy each other while listening to some nostalgic music. Brothers Jose Tapia, Ruben Salcido, Alberto Grijalva, and Jaime Flores got there early to stake our claim and set up our area. Richard Archuleta magnificently grilled the special Ball Park hot dogs. The Ladies Auxiliary, including Cecilia Flores, Delia Narvaez, Rebecca Archuleta, Lexie Vasquez, Lydia Ibarra and Martha Garcia, coordinated and served the side dishes and desserts. As always, our Knights of Columbus Family enjoyed simply relaxing and breaking bread together! 4 FUNERAL SERVICES FOR WILLIAM KLEMENT, SR SAT AUG 11 th : On Saturday, August 11 th, we paid our last respects to William Klement, Sr, the father of our Brother Knight Bill Klement. The services were held at the Holy Family Church in Deming. The rosary service started at 9:30 AM, followed by the funeral Mass at 10:00 AM. William Klement Sr was a well known teacher and coach at the Deming High School. He was a Sir Knight and a Past Grand Knight in Deming. Many Brother Knights from the entire Deming - Las Cruces Anthony area attended. Present from our St Genevieve Council and St Michael the Archangel Assembly were Richard Archuleta, Jaime Flores, Andres Garcia, Jim Glasscock, Al Lopez, Bob Ponzini, Jaime Rivera, and Jose Tapia. Our responsibilities include: Kids Games, Ticket Booths for food & games, Grounds Keeping, Kitchen KP, Selling of ads and coordination of the Fiesta Book, and the Ladies Auxiliary Prize Booth. Many of our Brother Knights and Ladies from the Auxiliary have been working hard on these activities over the past several months. Our council is dedicated to being a major help to St. Genevieve s having a successful community social event and fundraiser. 5 INSURANCE AGENT S MESSAGE Another LIMRA statistic said 43 percent of people did not buy life insurance because they worry about making the wrong decision. Like most awareness-raising campaigns, Life Insurance Awareness Month was created because there is an overwhelming lack of understanding of life insurance, its uses, its benefits, and its variations among the general public. Each year, the Life Insurance Market Research Association (LIMRA) puts out the results from a recent survey, and unfortunately, the numbers they report continue to be discouraging. A recent survey found that more than 75 percent of people polled did not have a personal financial advisor, even though 68 percent of them said their opinion of the current economic conditions was somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable. In other words, a majority of those surveyed were uncomfortable with the economy and the uncertainty it brings, yet they did not seek professional assistance. Maybe they spoke with their friends and family. Maybe they hoped the instability would go away on its own. Maybe they did not know to whom to turn. If you fall into this category, please remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus, you have a full-time, professional agent you can call your own. My primary responsibility is the care and service of your family s life insurance, retirement and long-term care needs. I ll answer your questions because I want your decisions to be informed ones. 7 STATE EXCELLENCE AWARD TO JULIA HOLGUIN Julia Holguin has been recognized by the NM State Council of the Knights of Columbus for a Lifetime Achievement Award. She started serving the Catholic Community in 1945, teaching CCD and playing the organ at San Jose de Cristo Rey Church. She has carried her gentle gift to St. Genevieve s from her home barrios, San Jose de Cristo Rey Church and Santa Teresita in southern New Mexico and El Paso. We have been blessed at St. Genevieve s to have shared life with her over these past 45 years Julia s Award for Julia & her friend Ophelia Narvaez 75 yrs of Service working in the parish kitchen MEGA BINGO: A Mega Bingo Planning Group has been at work for a number of months, working in support of our October 6, 2018 event. This group includes Brothers Jaime Flores, Jesus Frietze, Bill Klement, Dave Lerma, Al Lopez, Bob Ponzini, Jaime Rivera, Ruben Salcido, Joe Tapia, and Lucio Tellez. If you have questions, contact one of them. Right now, we are hard at work selling tickets. We have about 104 tickets left. Tickets are available at the Parish Office, the Parish Hall during Thurs, Fri, or Sun evening bingo games, or from Brothers Al Lopez or Bob Ponzini. Brothers Al Lopez, Jaime Flores and I attended the District Wide meeting on August 26 th. The new Program Faith in Action model allows us to come together to share our faith, celebrate fraternity with our families and stand shoulder to shoulder in service to our community and defend life at all stages. Family Unity Night on September 19 th at 6:30 pm at St Genevieve Parish Hall. 7. September 29 th is the feast of St Michael the Archangel. Our Council and Ladies Auxiliary have been assigned to lead the following seven tasks: (1) Selling ads for the Fiesta Book; (2) Coordinating with the parish and printer to put together the Fiesta Book; (3) Ticket Booths; (4) Kids Games; (5) Kids Prize Booth Ladies Auxiliary; (6) Ground Keeping of the fiesta grounds; and (7) Pots and Pans in the kitchen.
